Purchase price lands in the mid-single-digit thousands. Delivered to southeast Iowa, uncrated and installed on an existing 4-inch slab, the total comes in around the low double-digit thousands including hydraulic hookup and a first-year service visit. Warranty is factory-fresh: five years on structure, two on hydraulics, one on wear items.
For his fleet the 9,000 lb capacity is the honest ceiling. Half-ton pickups run 5,500 to 6,500 lb wet, three-quarter-ton diesels touch 7,800, and once you add a full fuel tank and roof rack you are inside 85 percent of rated capacity. That is fine for storage and light service but leaves no margin for the utility trailer he sometimes wanted to park underneath. New lifts also come with a phone number and a parts pipeline. Configuration two: used 14K vehicle storage lift from a municipal shop
The used-lift path was a 14,000 lb capacity commercial four-post that had spent 11 years in a municipal fleet garage. What you get for that money is a much heavier structural safety margin and true room for a diesel dually plus a trailer underneath. What you give up is the fresh warranty. For a fleet that would run this lift five days a week, the deeper capacity was the deciding factor.
Ceiling clearance and runway length side by side
His building had 14-foot sidewalls, so ceiling was not the tight constraint. The runway length was. The new 9,000 lb four-post is 165 inches of usable runway, which handles a standard-cab pickup with a few inches on either end for the front tires to sit inside the wheel stops. The used 14K unit runs a 208-inch runway to accommodate crew-cab long-box trucks and shuttle vans, and it also has drive-through bosses on both ends for pulling straight through with a trailer.
For a fleet with mixed truck configurations, the longer runway is genuinely useful. A crew-cab long-box on a 165-inch runway looks fine until you try to open the tailgate, at which point the tailgate hits the rear cross member. The 208-inch runway of the used lift eliminates that problem completely. If your fleet is all half-tons with short beds, the shorter new lift is fine. If you have any long-box or extended-cab units, the extra runway pays for itself in the first week.
Service access, jack tray, and daily maintenance fit
Both configurations accept a rolling bridge jack for wheel service, oil pan drops, and drivetrain work. The new 9,000 lb unit takes a 4,500 lb aluminum jack, which is light enough to reposition solo. The used 14K unit takes a heavier 7,000 lb steel jack, which is more capable but takes two people to move if you are not on a smooth floor. For a solo mobile-mechanic setup we prefer the aluminum jack; for a two-person shop the steel unit is more versatile.
Oil changes, tire rotations, and brake service happen at full-height storage lift travel on either configuration. Suspension work needs the rolling jack to unload the wheels. Both lifts have identical safety lock ladders every 4 inches, so the working height sits at a comfortable 60 inches for most tasks. For general daily maintenance across a small fleet, either lift will do the job. The question is really which one matches the fleet weight and length profile.
Downtime risk, parts availability, and reconditioning warranty
Any vehicle storage lift can fail. What matters is what happens when it does. The new lift has a factory 800-number, a US parts warehouse, and same-week service from a certified installer. The used lift has us. We stock cables, hydraulic pumps, power units, and safety lock components for every major brand in our Ames warehouse. Running the ten-year math changes the picture. The new 9,000 lb vehicle storage lift starts cheaper on the sticker but ages into cable replacement around year eight and a hydraulic rebuild around year ten. Roll that in and you are looking at a ten-year all-in cost in the low teens of thousands. The used 14K unit starts with a fresh cable set and rebuilt hydraulics from our reconditioning shop, and it will not need major service until year twelve to fifteen. Ten-year all-in for the used unit is nearly identical, sometimes lower.
The variable that moves the number is fleet growth. If the fleet stays at six trucks and never tows anything heavier than a landscape trailer, the new 9,000 lb lift will serve the whole decade.
