Vehicle Storage Lift Pre-Purchase Checklist for Des Moines-Area Farm Shops

A farm shop owner northeast of the Des Moines metro asked us for a vehicle storage lift comparison last fall — he was down to three finalists across two manufacturers and wanted to know which specs actually mattered for a mixed farm-vehicle service load. His work list was long: differential fluid on a pair of pickups, hydraulic top-offs on a tractor loader, oil changes on side-by-sides, and long-term storage of a restoration project. This is the pre-purchase checklist we walked him through, in the order it should be run for any farm-shop buyer between Story City and Nevada.

Checklist item one: heaviest vehicle you’ll ever store

Farm shops routinely underestimate the top-end vehicle weight they’ll want to service. A Chevy 3500 dually with a service body clocks in over 8,000 pounds. A loaded Kubota RTV with a plow is 3,200 pounds and often lives on stands over winter. The vehicle storage lift capacity you buy needs to hold the heaviest of those, plus a 15 percent margin. For the buyer we quoted, that meant a 10,000-pound four-post rather than the 9,000 he had in mind. The upcharge from 9,000 to 10,000 was small enough that he didn’t blink. Undersizing here is expensive later — you can’t upsize a four-post without swapping the whole lift, and the freight cost alone is meaningful.

Checklist item two: runway length and wheelbase

The next spec on the checklist is runway length. A standard four-post storage unit has runways around 14 to 15 feet long, which fits most passenger cars and half-ton pickups but starts running short for extended-cab or long-bed trucks. A crew-cab 3500 long-bed measures over 20 feet bumper to bumper. If any of the vehicles you plan to store or service exceed that, you need extended runways — 17-foot or even 19-foot options are available at a small upcharge on most manufacturer lines. For the farm buyer we spec’d 17-foot runways so the 3500 crew cab fit with a foot of margin on each end. Runways can’t be extended later — that’s a purchase-time decision.

Checklist item three: three vehicle storage lifts side by side

The three finalists on the buyer’s list were a Rotary 10,000-pound extended-runway, a Challenger four-post at similar capacity, and a home-storage-oriented lift from a value brand. Head to head, the Rotary and Challenger units both carried ALI certification, factory-anchored construction, and multi-year commercial warranties. The value brand was cheaper by roughly 25 percent, uncertified, with a shorter warranty. For a farm shop running commercial-weight vehicles, we recommend the certified units every time. The extra investment pays back over the first serious weight-load season — no bent runways, no cable stretch, no warranty argument with a manufacturer that won’t return calls. Checklist item four: differential-fluid access under the lift

Differential fluid service is one of the most annoying farm-vehicle jobs on the ground and one of the easiest on a lifted platform. The rear diff drain plug on a Chevy 3500 is 22 inches above the shop floor when the truck is parked — meaning you’re on your back with a wrench for the fill. On the vehicle storage lift at chest height, it takes ten minutes. The one thing to check when buying: make sure the storage lift you choose has enough drop-out clearance under the runways for a catch pan. Most units have 30-plus inches at full lift; a few compact home models have only 24. That matters if your catch pan is deep.

Checklist item five: rolling jack compatibility

A rolling jack on a vehicle storage lift lets you pop wheels off individually for brake service, tire work, or bearing repack. Not every storage lift accepts the same jacks — some are proprietary to the lift manufacturer, others accept a universal-fit jack that rides on the inside runway lip. When buying, spec the jack at the same time and confirm compatibility in writing. The rolling jack itself is a hydraulic unit with its own mechanical lock, and it should be sized to at least half the lift’s total capacity — for a 10,000-pound lift, a 5,000 or 6,000-pound jack is right. Checklist item six: freight, forklift, and rural delivery

A vehicle storage lift ships as a crated 2,500 to 3,000-pound unit — you can’t offload it with a pickup and two guys. Farm shops sometimes have a forklift or a tractor with pallet forks; if you do, freight delivers curbside and you handle it. If not, we bring our own forklift on the install trailer and offload for you. Rural delivery to zones outside the Des Moines metro takes an extra day of transit and sometimes requires a smaller box truck that the freight carrier has to schedule specifically. Checklist item seven: warranty and Iowa parts availability

The final item on the pre-purchase list is warranty and parts. A commercial-grade lift from Rotary or Challenger carries a multi-year structural warranty and typically a shorter warranty on hydraulic and electrical components. Parts availability matters more than the warranty length — a five-year warranty means nothing if you can’t get a replacement cylinder seal kit within a week.
