A raw four-post is not a transmission lift on its own because the runways are in the way. For a passenger-car transmission service you want at least one 4,500-lb rolling bridge jack, ideally two so you can pick up the front and rear together when you need to slide a transmission out from underneath. Ceiling Height, Post Height, and Drive-On Ramp Reality

For a 30×40 shop with 12-foot sidewalls, the answer for most storage models is yes, but it is worth measuring twice. A standard 9,000-lb four-post storage lift has a post height right at 92 to 96 inches, a full extended runway height of about 78 inches with the runway itself six to seven inches thick, and a locked-parking height that leaves the stored vehicle underside sitting around 72 to 78 inches off the concrete. With 12-foot sidewalls you have plenty of clearance for the posts and any car parked overhead, even a full-size Suburban.
The place people run into trouble is not the height, it is the drive-on ramp length. Most four-posts need six to eight feet of ramp clearance behind the lift for the drive-on approach, and if you park the machine too close to the back wall of a 40-foot building you will be reversing tightly. Concrete Slab, Anchoring, and 12-Foot Sidewalls

A vehicle storage lift needs at least four inches of 3,000-psi concrete under each of the four columns, and honestly we prefer six inches under a 9,000 to 14,000-lb four-post. Fresh concrete needs a full 28-day cure before anchor bolts go in, so if you are pouring the slab this fall and dropping a lift in December, we are going to check the pour date and possibly wait a week.
The four-column footprint gives you a huge advantage here compared to a two-post. Each column carries roughly a quarter of the load plus a modest safety factor, versus a two-post where each column carries half. That means anchor bolt shear loads are lower per column, and even four inches of unblemished slab will hold a properly anchored 9,000-lb four-post. If your slab has expansion joints running under one of the column footprints, we relocate the lift so no anchor lands within four inches of a joint. Sidewalls at 12 feet are almost always enough for a standard-height storage lift, but if you are specifying extended-height posts to store an SUV over a full-size truck, we sanity-check the whole envelope before we quote.
