What overhead and baseplate actually mean on a storage-class lift
The overhead vs baseplate conversation started with 2-post service lifts, but it applies in a modified way to a vehicle storage lift too. Overhead configuration routes the hydraulic and equalization lines across the top between the two columns via a crossbeam, keeping the shop floor clean and unobstructed. Baseplate configuration routes those same lines through a floor channel or an underneath crossmember between the columns, keeping the ceiling clean and unobstructed. For a pure 4-post storage lift, the analog is whether the top crossbeams sit at raised-vehicle roof level (analogous to overhead) or whether the lift is stitched together at the base (analogous to baseplate). In restoration shops with limited ceiling, the baseplate-style unit is often the right call.
Overhead: cleaner floor, taller minimum ceiling
Overhead-style vehicle storage lift installs put the tallest fixed component of the machine above the top vehicle. That means no floor tripping hazards, no channel to sweep out, and easier walk-around when the lift is loaded. The tradeoff is you need real ceiling to swallow the top crossbeam plus the vehicle plus a working clearance margin. A shop with 15 to 16 feet of clear interior height has options; a shop with 12 does not. If your restoration work involves welding a project frame at shoulder-height under the raised top vehicle, the overhead configuration also gives you unobstructed floor movement for a rolling MIG welder cart and a portable exhaust arm. Those two accessories matter more than most catalog pages let on.
Baseplate: shorter ceiling, but watch the floor
Baseplate-style storage lifts trade a lower total height envelope for a floor-mounted crossmember or channel that connects the columns. For a shop with 11 to 12 feet of ceiling and a restoration workflow, this is often the winner. You can raise a customer’s car to full storage height without banging a truss chord, and the floor channel — when installed flush with a poured recess or with a low-profile ramp on either side — is manageable. What you do not want is a baseplate channel sitting proud above the floor in a bay where a floor-jack, an engine-hoist, or a media-blast pot needs to roll across freely. Confirm the specific baseplate design before you commit; some are floor-flush by design, others are not.
Restoration workflow and the metal-work reality
Restoration and metal work under a raised vehicle has specific ergonomic needs. The tech needs to weld overhead at multiple angles, grind burr with a die grinder while looking up, and occasionally swing a body panel into and out of the workspace. In that context, an overhead-style storage lift gives you the cleanest arc of motion, but only if you have the ceiling to spare. A baseplate-style lift creates a small pinch point at the floor channel that you learn to work around. The honest answer for most southwest Iowa restoration shops is: measure your ceiling first, then pick the config, then adjust workflow to fit. Do not do it in the other order.
Safety-cam and locking mechanisms on both configurations
Regardless of configuration, every vehicle storage lift we sell to a working shop ships with a mechanical safety-cam or locking-pawl system that engages automatically as the lift rises. On overhead configurations, the locks are typically at the column tops and you visually confirm engagement by watching the pin seat itself. On baseplate configurations, the locks are lower on the column and the visual is at eye level, which some techs actually prefer. Neither configuration is inherently safer than the other; both meet the same ALI standard when specified from a reputable manufacturer. What matters is that your tech knows what engaged looks like on your specific unit. Post a laminated photo on the column showing the locked state.
Ceiling-first shop layout for a restoration bay
Restoration bays live and die by ceiling geometry. Before you pick overhead or baseplate on your next vehicle storage lift, walk the bay with a laser measure and record the height at eight points: each corner of the intended lift footprint, the four midpoints between corners. If any of those readings is under twelve feet, baseplate is likely your answer. If all eight are over fourteen, overhead opens up better ergonomics. In between is a judgment call we’re happy to make with you on video. Do not measure to the roof peak. Do not average. Take the lowest reading and design around it. That single discipline has saved more retrofits than any other habit we push on our shop customers.
