Weight Rating: Match the Lift to What You Actually Own

Most of the calls we field involve passenger vehicles in the 6,000 to 7,000 pound range, sometimes with a heavier truck or SUV in the mix. Don’t buy to the vehicle you have today only — buy to what you might store in five years. A 9,000 to 10,000 pound rated storage lift costs a little more up front but gives you room to add a full-size truck or a project vehicle later without needing to replace the whole setup.

We also ask every caller what’s underneath the lift when it’s raised. If you’re planning to park a second vehicle beneath a stored car or truck, you need enough rise height and enough clearance under the arms and crossmembers to fit that second vehicle’s roofline. Think about how you actually move through your garage. If you back a car in and rarely need to walk all the way around the front while it’s raised, symmetric arms work fine and tend to be the simpler, slightly more affordable choice for straightforward storage. If you’re using the space underneath for a workbench, second vehicle, or regular foot traffic, asymmetric arms buy you real usable floor space at the front of the lift.
