That’s a fair question, because the total cost swings a lot depending on whether you go overhead or baseplate, and most sellers only quote the easy number. Why Tire Shops Need a Different Lift Strategy Than Repair Bays

Tire and wheel work is high-cycle by nature — cars come up, get rotated or swapped, and come back down, sometimes a dozen times a day per bay. That’s a very different demand profile than a repair shop where a vehicle sits loaded for hours. When we spec vehicle storage lifts for a shop doing tire rotation and wheel work, we’re not just thinking about static storage capacity, we’re thinking about how many cycles the hydraulics and locks will see in a week and whether the unit is actually rated for that kind of turnover.

A lot of shops in northeast Iowa try to stretch a storage-rated lift into daily tire service duty because the price looks better upfront. That’s usually a mistake — storage lifts built for occasional parking cycle far less than a dedicated service lift, and pushing one into high-frequency tire work shortens the life of the locks and hydraulics fast. We steer tire shop owners toward units rated for higher duty cycles even if the sticker price is a bit higher, because the cost of replacing worn components twice as often erases that savings within a year or two.

Overhead Configuration: Cost and What You Get

An overhead-style two or four-post configuration typically costs more upfront because the columns and structure need to support the load through an overhead beam or cross-member, and depending on your ceiling height, it may also mean additional install labor to anchor into the building structure properly. The tradeoff is a clear floor beneath the lift with no baseplate to work around, which matters in a tire bay where technicians are constantly moving equipment, tire machines, and carts underneath.

For a shop running 8 to 12 foot ceilings, which is common in a lot of northeast Iowa commercial buildings, overhead configurations are usually feasible, but we always check the building’s structural rating before quoting one. Install costs for overhead setups run higher than baseplate because of the additional anchoring and alignment work, and that’s before you factor in electrical if the unit needs a dedicated circuit. When we price these out, the equipment itself is usually 55 to 65 percent of the total project cost, with install and any structural work making up the rest.

Baseplate Configuration: Cost and What You Get

Baseplate vehicle storage lifts skip the overhead structure entirely, which lowers both equipment cost and install complexity since there’s no ceiling anchoring involved. For a lot of northeast Iowa shops with older buildings or lower ceilings, baseplate is simply the only option that works without expensive structural reinforcement. Install typically involves anchoring the base into the slab, which means we check slab thickness and condition first — a cracked or thin slab can turn a same-day install into a multi-day job with concrete work added.

The tradeoff with baseplate is the base itself takes up floor space and can be a minor obstacle for tire carts and jacks rolling underneath. For high-cycle tire work, we usually recommend baseplate units rated for frequent use rather than storage-only models, and the equipment cost difference between a storage-rated and service-rated baseplate unit is smaller than most owners expect — often just a few hundred dollars once you’re comparing similar capacities.

What Install Actually Adds to the Total

Install cost is where a lot of online-only sellers leave shop owners guessing, because they sell the lift and wash their hands of everything after that. For a standard baseplate configuration on a good slab, install typically runs a smaller fraction of total project cost.
