Why Vehicle Storage Lifts Ship Differently Than Other Shop Equipment

A two-post service lift or a set of jack stands ships as one or two boxes. Vehicle storage lifts, particularly four-post models built for parking a full-size truck above another vehicle, break down into a column set, a ramp set, a hydraulic power unit, and a hardware box – sometimes five or six separate crates on one order. Total shipped weight on a mid-capacity storage lift commonly runs 2,500 to 4,000 pounds once you add it all up, which is well past what a two-person crew can muscle off a truck by hand.

That weight distribution across multiple crates actually helps on the receiving end, since no single piece typically exceeds 600 to 800 pounds – manageable with a pallet jack or a small forklift, though the ramp sections on longer platforms can run awkward lengths of 16 to 18 feet that need clear floor space to maneuver. We flag this to every dealership before freight ships: know your crate count and rough dimensions ahead of the delivery date, because a driver showing up to a dock with no forklift and no plan is a common source of delayed installs across the corridor.

Dock Access Along the Iowa-Illinois Corridor: What We See on the Ground

Dealerships between Des Moines and the Quad Cities vary enormously in dock setup. Newer service drives built in the last decade usually have a dedicated receiving dock with a dock plate and forklift on staff. Older buildings, especially ones retrofitted from a previous dealership brand or an independent shop conversion, often have nothing more than a single ground-level door and a hand truck. Both situations are workable, but they require different freight coordination well before delivery day.

For sites without dock access, we arrange for a liftgate truck or coordinate a rental forklift to meet the delivery on-site, and we build that cost into the project quote up front rather than surprising a service manager with it after the fact. We’ve handled deliveries as far east as the Quad Cities and as far west as the Des Moines metro, and the pattern holds across the whole corridor: the freight carrier will get the crates to your address, but getting them off the truck and into position inside the building is a separate problem that needs its own plan.

Forklift Requirements and What Happens Without One

A forklift rated for at least 5,000 pounds with forks long enough to handle an 8 to 10-foot column crate is the standard we recommend for unloading vehicle storage lifts. Anything smaller struggles with the longer ramp crates, and anything without adjustable fork width risks damaging the crate or the lift components inside during handling. We’ve seen dealerships try to make do with a warehouse forklift sized for pallets of parts, and it simply isn’t built for crate lengths this long.

When a site doesn’t have a forklift on hand, our crew brings the equipment needed to unload and stage the crates, but that has to be arranged in advance – it’s not something we can improvise the day of delivery if the freight truck arrives and nobody’s ready. We also coordinate delivery timing so crates aren’t sitting on a receiving dock exposed to weather for days before installation begins; hydraulic components and powder-coated columns don’t need to sit outside in Iowa or Illinois weather any longer than necessary, and rust starting on brand-new components before installation is a completely avoidable problem.

Sizing for Exhaust and Driveline Access Once the Lift Is On-Site

Once freight and unloading are handled, the actual use case matters for how the storage lift gets positioned. Dealerships storing vehicles that will also need exhaust or driveline work done while parked benefit from a four-post storage lift with drive-through capability and enough underside clearance for a technician to access the exhaust system, differential, or driveshaft without lowering the vehicle first. That typically means specifying a model with at least 6.5 feet of clearance underneath at full rise, more if a rolling jack or a technician needs to stand upright under the vehicle.

This is different from a pure storage-only lift, where minimizing footprint matters more than underside access. We ask every dealership up front whether the vehicles going on these lifts are purely parked overflow or whether technicians will need to work underneath them periodically, because that answer changes which model we recommend and how we position it relative to the shop’s existing exhaust and driveline work areas. Getting this wrong means a storage lift that technically holds the vehicle but forces awkward, cramped work every time something needs attention underneath.

Concrete and Anchoring: The Part That Happens After the Truck Leaves

Freight gets the equipment on-site, but installation still depends on the slab underneath it. Vehicle storage lifts, especially four-post models with a loaded weight well over 10,000 pounds once a vehicle is parked, need anchoring into concrete that meets a minimum thickness and cure standard – generally 4 inches of properly cured slab as a floor, with thicker requirements for heavier-capacity units. We test the slab before we ever unpack a crate, because finding out during installation that the floor won’t hold anchors means the freight and staging work already done was wasted time.

Dealerships in older buildings along this corridor sometimes have service drive additions poured at different times, with inconsistent thickness or rebar placement between sections. We’ve had installs where the ideal storage lift location on paper turned out to be the weakest section of slab in the building, requiring either a different location or supplemental concrete work before anchoring. Planning this during the freight coordination phase, not after delivery, keeps the whole project moving instead of stalling with expensive equipment sitting crated in a corner.

Scheduling Delivery and Install Around an Active Service Drive

The last logistics piece is timing the actual installation so it doesn’t shut down an active dealership service drive. We typically schedule vehicle storage lift installs for slower days or stagger them around existing bay usage, since the install process involves running a forklift or crane through the same space technicians are trying to work in. For dealerships that can’t afford any service disruption, we’ve done installs in phases – unloading and staging one day, full installation and calibration on a second visit – to keep freight logistics and installation from colliding with a busy service schedule.

We also coordinate directly with the freight carrier on delivery windows rather than leaving a dealership to guess when a truck might show up. A vague “sometime this week” delivery window doesn’t work when you need a forklift, a crew, and a clear dock all lined up at the same time. Locking in a firm delivery appointment, confirming crate count and dimensions in advance, and having anchoring points already tested on the slab turns what could be a multi-week logistics headache into a predictable one or two-day process from truck arrival to a fully functional storage lift ready for daily use.
