Baseplate configurations are generally the lower-cost entry point because they don’t require the additional steel crossbar structure that overhead designs use to tie the posts together near the ceiling. Then Check Ceiling Height and Building Structure

Once budget narrows your options, ceiling height decides the rest. Overhead configurations need extra clearance for the crossbar connecting the tops of the posts, which in older east-central Iowa shop buildings — plenty of which were converted from agricultural or light industrial use — can be a real constraint. We’ve walked into buildings with beautiful floor space and disappointing 10-foot clearance that simply won’t accommodate an overhead unit stacked with two vehicles.

Baseplate designs skip that crossbar and route their structural support along the floor instead, which frees up ceiling inches but adds a footprint consideration — the plate itself takes up floor space you’ll need to route around with jack stands, rolling carts, and foot traffic. For shops with tall pole-building or converted-barn ceilings, overhead configurations open up cleaner floor space for exactly this reason. For shops that inherited a shorter building, baseplate is often the only real option, and that’s fine — both configurations hold vehicles safely when installed and rated correctly.

Factor In Annual State Inspections

This is the part of the decision tree that’s specific to restoration shops rather than home garages. If your shop handles annual state inspections for customers, you need vehicles moving on and off the equipment efficiently, not just parked for months. Overhead configurations tend to give techs a slightly more open approach to the vehicle since there’s no plate at ground level, which some inspectors and techs prefer when they’re getting underneath a car repeatedly during inspection season rather than storing it long-term.

Baseplate configurations aren’t a dealbreaker for inspection work, but you do want to confirm the plate height and ramp design don’t slow down how quickly a car gets positioned and removed. If your shop runs inspections in batches — say, a rush of customers all bringing cars in around registration renewal time — throughput matters more than it would for a shop using storage lifts purely to park finished restoration projects out of the way for months at a time.

Weigh Project Car Turnover Against Storage Duration

Restoration shops tend to fall into one of two patterns: fast turnover with cars in and out within weeks, or long-term storage where a project sits for months while parts get sourced and bodywork gets scheduled. Fast-turnover shops usually lean toward baseplate for the lower cost and simpler footprint, since the vehicle isn’t sitting up top for extended periods and the ramp-and-plate design doesn’t need to compete with other floor activity for long stretches.

Shops running long-term storage — multiple half-finished projects parked for months while a customer saves up or a part gets sourced — often justify the overhead configuration’s higher upfront cost because the open floor space underneath gets used constantly for other work in the meantime. We ask shop owners point-blank how many weeks a typical car sits before it moves, because that number tells us more about which configuration pays for itself than almost any other question in the whole conversation.

Consider How Many Units You’re Actually Installing

Restoration shops rarely need just one. If you’re installing multiple vehicle storage lifts across a shop floor, spacing between units becomes its own constraint that home garage buyers never have to think about. Overhead crossbars can sometimes be shared or aligned between adjacent units in a way that saves steel and installation labor, while baseplate units need enough floor clearance between plates for techs and equipment to move freely.

Whatever configuration you land on, the weight rating has to cover your heaviest realistic vehicle, not your average one. We see shops undersize a lift because most of what comes through is light, only to have it become a bottleneck the one time a heavier vehicle needs storage or inspection work.

Both overhead and baseplate designs come in a range of capacities, so this isn’t usually a configuration-limiting decision, but it does affect which specific model within each category makes sense.
