Most RV and trailer shops don’t have a parking problem, they have a floor-plan problem. Every bay that’s occupied by a unit waiting for pickup is a bay that isn’t earning labor hours. This shop in east-central Iowa was turning away exhaust repairs and driveline jobs simply because there was nowhere to put the customer’s rig while it waited its turn. The Slab Question Nobody Wants to Answer Honestly

This shop’s floor had been poured for typical shop traffic, not for concentrated point loads from a storage lift’s four posts carrying a loaded RV overhead. A lot of installers skip this question because it’s an uncomfortable one to ask a customer who already committed to a purchase. We’d rather ask it up front.

Slab thickness matters more than most shop owners expect. A 4-inch slab poured without rebar or mesh reinforcement can be fine for foot traffic and light vehicles, but it is not the same floor you want anchoring a fully loaded storage lift. We recommend a minimum of 4 to 6 inches of properly cured concrete with rebar or mesh reinforcement under anchor points, and in this shop’s case, one corner of the building had a thinner pour from an old addition that needed a reinforced footing poured before we’d anchor anything there. Skipping that step doesn’t just risk lift failure, it risks the concrete itself cracking and spalling under load over time. We’d rather find that problem on a Tuesday afternoon with a core sample than after an RV is parked on the second level.

Site Survey Before Anything Gets Ordered

Once the slab was confirmed, we measured ceiling height, door clearances, and the path a loaded trailer would need to travel to reach the bay. This sounds obvious until you’ve seen a lift ordered before anyone measured the roll-up door height. In this shop, 12-foot sidewalls left enough room for a two-level storage setup, but only if we picked a model with a lower platform height and confirmed the overhead clearance with the trailer’s tallest point still accounted for.

We also looked at how trucks and trailers would maneuver once units were parked. Storage lifts don’t do you much good if backing a trailer into position means clipping a support post or a neighboring bay every time. We laid out the intended footprint with tape on the floor before ordering anything, which let the owner walk it, back a trailer toward it, and confirm the spacing worked in real life instead of on paper.

Install Day: What Actually Happened

Installation took a day and a half. Anchoring came first, torqued to spec into the reinforced sections of the slab we’d confirmed earlier. Then came the columns, the carriage, and the safety mechanisms, checked and re-checked before anything was loaded. We walked the shop’s staff through the controls, the locking mechanisms, and the load limits before we left, because a storage lift is only as safe as the people running it every day.

The shop’s first real test came within the week: a customer’s travel trailer needed to go up top so a smaller unit could take the ground-level bay for exhaust work. It went smoothly, no surprises, no adjustments needed. That’s the outcome we’re always aiming for. The First Service Job Underneath

A few weeks in, the real payoff showed up. With one unit parked overhead, the crew had a full ground-level bay open for driveline work on a trailer that had been waiting nearly two weeks for space. That’s the entire point of a storage lift setup in a working shop: it’s not just parking, it’s freeing up the floor space that actually generates revenue.

The owner told us later that the backlog they’d been carrying for exhaust and driveline jobs cleared out within the first month. That’s not a guarantee we make for every shop, but it’s a realistic outcome when the real constraint was floor space rather than labor or parts availability.
