If you’re breaking ground on a new pole building or converting an existing outbuilding into a restoration shop somewhere around Omaha, Lincoln, or the smaller towns in between, vehicle storage lifts need to be part of the plan before the concrete truck ever shows up. We’ve had this exact conversation with weekend hobbyists building out a 30×40 or 40×60 shop who assumed they could just “figure out the lift later.” That’s backward. The lift dictates ceiling height, door placement, electrical drops, and floor thickness. Get the sequencing wrong and you’ll either be cutting into a finished slab or living with a lift that doesn’t fit the space you already built.

Start With Ceiling Height, Not the Lift Catalog

Every conversation about vehicle storage lifts should start with a tape measure pointed at your rafters, not a spec sheet. A typical 4-post storage lift needs somewhere around 12 to 13 feet of clearance to fully raise a vehicle, and that number changes depending on whether you’re stacking a second car underneath or just parking one up top for floor space. Hobbyists building a 30×40 pole building with 12-foot side walls are right at the edge of comfortable clearance once you account for the lift’s own deck height plus the vehicle’s roofline.

We tell people building in eastern Nebraska to add a foot of buffer beyond what the spec sheet says you need. Trusses, purlins, and any future lighting or ductwork all eat into usable height. If you’re restoring anything with a raised body, a lift kit, or a trailer you want to store nose-up, that buffer becomes even more important. This is the single most common reason we get calls from people who already have a shop built and are frustrated that their storage lift options are more limited than they expected. Measure twice, order once.

Concrete Thickness and Anchor Points Come Before Walls

Vehicle storage lifts, especially the 4-post style most hobbyists want for stacked storage, need a slab that can handle concentrated point loads at each column base. A standard 4-inch residential slab is often not enough once you’re talking about a loaded lift holding a project car plus tools and parts. We recommend a minimum of 4.5 to 6 inches of properly cured, unreinforced or lightly reinforced concrete depending on soil conditions common in Nebraska’s clay-heavy ground.

If you’re still in the planning phase, this is the cheapest possible time to get it right. Pouring a thicker slab in the footprint where the lift will sit costs very little extra during initial construction. Tearing out a finished floor to reinforce it after the fact is expensive and disruptive. We also recommend deciding on lift placement before you frame interior walls or workbenches, since column spacing on most storage lifts runs wider than people expect once you account for door swing and vehicle overhang.

Weight Rating: Don’t Just Plan for Today’s Project

We regularly hear from hobbyists who want something rated for a passenger vehicle around 7,000 pounds or less because that covers their current daily driver or restoration project. That’s a reasonable starting point, but think ahead. If restoration and metal work is your long-term hobby, you’ll eventually bring home a truck, a vintage vehicle with a heavier frame, or a project with an engine swap that adds weight. Buying a lift rated right at your current vehicle’s weight leaves no margin.

A 9,000 to 10,000 pound rated storage lift usually costs only marginally more than a 7,000 pound unit but gives you real flexibility for years. Think about what you might store or work on five years from now, not just what’s parked in your driveway today, when you’re sizing this piece of equipment for a build that’s supposed to last.

Sequencing: Lift Layout Before Door and Electrical Placement

One of the most overlooked pieces of a garage build-out is how the lift interacts with your overhead doors and electrical layout. If you’re planning to store a vehicle up top and work underneath it, you need clearance not just for the lift itself but for opening car doors, walking around the vehicle, and running tools. Electrical is the other piece people forget. Hydraulic power units for storage lifts need a dedicated circuit, and where that circuit terminates matters based on where the lift’s power unit will sit relative to the columns. If you’re wiring the shop yourself or hiring an electrician before the lift arrives, get the lift’s specific power requirements in hand first. Retrofitting a circuit after drywall is up is a hassle nobody enjoys, and it’s completely avoidable with about fifteen minutes of planning during the design phase of your build.

Symmetric Layout Decisions for Storage-Focused Use

Even though storage lifts aren’t primarily about wheel alignment work the way asymmetric 2-post lifts are, the arm and column configuration still affects usability. For pure vehicle storage lifts where you’re parking a car up top and want maximum floor space underneath for a workbench or a second vehicle, a straight 4-post design with runways is usually the simplest and most reliable choice. It doesn’t require the same attention to arm positioning that a 2-post lift does.

If your shop’s footprint is tight and you need to squeeze the lift close to a wall or another piece of equipment, talk to us about column spacing options before ordering. Some storage lifts offer adjustable runway width or extended length decks for longer vehicles, which matters if restoration work in your shop involves classic trucks, longer sedans, or anything with an extended wheelbase. Getting this decision right at purchase time saves you from working around a lift that’s technically installed but awkward to actually use every day.

Ramps, Casters, and Rolling Bridge Options

Once the basic footprint is settled, think about how you’ll actually load and unload the vehicle up top. Most storage lifts come with either standard ramps or optional rolling bridge/caster kits that let you reposition the lift within the shop after installation. For a hobbyist doing restoration and metal work, having the flexibility to move the lift out of the way when you’re doing a big frame-off project can be genuinely useful.

We also see people underestimate how much ramp length matters for lower vehicles or anything with an aggressive front air dam. If your project car sits low, ask about extended or adjustable ramps before you finalize the order. This is a small detail on paper but it’s the difference between smoothly driving a car up onto the lift every time and scraping the front bumper on every approach, which gets old fast in a shop you’re using weekly.

Get a Layout Before You Buy, Not After

The single best piece of advice we give anyone planning vehicle storage lifts for a new build in eastern Nebraska is to get an actual site layout before you commit to a purchase.
