Start With Your Budget, Then Work Backward

Every good decision tree for vehicle storage lifts starts with money, not steel. A basic two-post lift rated for daily maintenance work sits at the entry end of the range, while a four-post storage lift built to hold a second vehicle parked on top costs more because you’re buying a full deck, ramps, and often a rolling jack. But if the real goal is storing one vehicle up top while working underneath another, a four-post lift is the more natural fit, since the deck itself becomes usable storage space rather than just a lifting platform.

Some shops end up wanting both, and that’s a completely reasonable answer once the budget allows for it. But if there’s any chance a heavier truck or project vehicle will end up on that lift down the road, it costs very little extra to step up a weight class now versus replacing the whole unit in three years. Concrete Floor Requirements You Can’t Skip

Vehicle storage lifts anchor into the floor, and that anchor is only as good as the concrete underneath it. A typical 4-inch slab poured for a residential garage may not meet the thickness or cure-time requirements for a four-post storage lift carrying two vehicles’ worth of weight. Most manufacturers call for a minimum slab thickness and a minimum PSI rating, and skipping that check is how lifts end up with cracked anchors a year after installation.

If you’re pouring new concrete for a pole building specifically to house storage lifts, tell your concrete contractor up front what equipment is going in and where, so the slab gets poured to spec in that bay rather than as an afterthought.
