Rotary’s storage-rated 4-post family covers capacities from 7,000 to 14,000 pounds across a handful of column height and runway length variants. The 9,000-pound entry, which is the most common recommendation for a passenger-and-light-truck shop, has an overall height around 89 inches at the top of the column and a maximum rise around 72 inches at the highest lock position. Runway length runs from 173 to 197 inches depending on the standard or extended option, and runway width is 20 inches with 78 inches between runways for center-of-vehicle access.
The 12,000-pound Rotary 4-post steps up to accommodate three-quarter-ton and one-ton pickups, with an overall column height around 95 inches and a maximum rise around 74 inches. Runway length maxes at 216 inches for the extended option, which fits a crew-cab long-bed pickup with comfortable overhang margin. Wheel drop area is optional on the 12,000-pound family, which lets you do wheel bearing service on the platform without dismounting the vehicle. That is exactly the feature our northwest Iowa shop wanted for their wheel bearing workflow, and it drove them toward the 12,000-pound tier rather than the 9,000.
Challenger CL4P Storage Family
Challenger’s CL4P storage family covers 9,000 to 14,000 pounds with a lineup that closely parallels the Rotary options but with slightly different geometry choices. The CL4P9 at 9,000 pounds has an overall height of 88 inches at the top of the column and a maximum rise of 70 inches, running slightly shorter than the Rotary equivalent. Runway length runs 170 to 196 inches, and runway width is 21 inches with 74 inches between runways. That slightly narrower between-runway gap is a small trade-off for tighter overall shop footprint.
The Challenger 12,000-pound entry, CL4P12, has an overall column height of 94 inches and a maximum rise of 72 inches, again slightly shorter than the Rotary equivalent. Runway length maxes at 210 inches for the extended option. Optional wheel drop is available and functionally equivalent to the Rotary feature. Challenger CL4P vehicle storage lifts are ALI-certified and carry passive mechanical locks like the Rotary family, and the choice between the two brands typically comes down to price at the time of quote and to whether the customer already has a parts inventory built up around one brand for their other bays.
Wheel Drop Feature for Bearing Service Workflow
The wheel drop feature is a factory-optional cutout in the platform runway that lets a technician remove a wheel and support the hub on a jack tray while the vehicle is otherwise supported on the platform. For wheel bearing service, that means you can pull the wheel, remove the caliper and rotor, access the hub, and torque the bearing to spec without ever having the vehicle at ground level. It also means you can leave the vehicle in the wheel-drop configuration overnight for a settling cycle, which is exactly what our northwest Iowa shop wanted.
Wheel drop adds a modest premium to the base lift cost, and it requires the manufacturer-matched jack tray accessory to actually use. The combined cost of wheel drop plus jack tray is in the low-to-mid four-figure range depending on brand and capacity tier, and for a shop doing regular wheel bearing service the feature pays for itself in labor time savings within the first few months. For a shop doing occasional wheel bearing service, the wheel drop is nice-to-have but not essential because a floor jack under the vehicle from a separate lift can do the same thing at slower pace. Runway Bridge Options for Cross-Vehicle Work
Some 4-post storage lifts offer optional runway bridge extensions that let you span between the two runways with a walkable platform. That gives a technician the ability to stand on the bridge and work from above the vehicle, which is useful for engine bay access on trucks that don’t fit under a hood-open configuration comfortably. Bridge options are more common on commercial 4-post lifts than on home-garage variants, and they add a modest premium that most storage-focused buyers skip.

The bridge would have added cost without adding matching workflow value. Jack Tray Accessory Specifications
The jack tray accessory bolts across the two runways and provides a rolling platform to which you can mount an air-hydraulic bottle jack. Jack tray capacity typically runs 4,000 to 6,000 pounds, which is enough to lift a wheel or a drivetrain component off the platform while the vehicle otherwise rests on the ratchet locks. Air pressure requirement for the bottle jack is typically 90 to 100 PSI, which is compatible with most shop compressor setups. Some jack trays include a manual mechanical override lever for cases where air pressure isn’t available.
For wheel bearing service, the jack tray lifts the wheel assembly clear of the platform so the technician can remove and reinstall bearings with clear access from all sides. Our northwest Iowa shop specified two jack trays at order time because their workflow sometimes has two wheels being serviced simultaneously by different technicians. That accessory decision doubled their per-lift accessory cost but roughly halved their per-wheel service time, which was the right trade-off for a busy shop. Anchor bolts for a 9,000-pound 4-post are typically 3/4-inch diameter and get torqued to somewhere in the 100 to 150 foot-pound range depending on brand and specific anchor design. For 12,000-pound units, anchor diameter often goes to 3/4-inch or 7/8-inch and torque values scale up accordingly. Every install we do includes a written torque sign-off sheet that documents each anchor’s torque reading.
Slab minimums for storage-rated 4-post lifts at 9,000 pounds are typically 4-inch thickness at 3,000 PSI, and for 12,000-pound units the minimum steps to 4.25-inch or 4.5-inch at 3,000 to 3,500 PSI depending on brand. Our northwest Iowa shop had a 5-inch slab at 4,500 PSI, which was well above minimum for the 12,000-pound Rotary they ordered. That margin gave us confidence in the anchor pull-out ratings and made the install straightforward. Vehicle storage lifts installed on slabs that meet or exceed the manufacturer minimum will hold anchor specs for the life of the equipment, and the manufacturer-published specs are the right target to design against.
What the Northwest Iowa Shop Ordered
