A retired farmer outside Waterloo called us this spring asking about vehicle storage lifts for his shop, and the call was one of the more useful conversations we have had in a while because he had a genuinely different use case from the typical hobbyist. What seasonal storage actually means in Iowa
Seasonal storage in Iowa has specific requirements that a lot of buyers underestimate. If you are parking a vehicle from November to April, that vehicle is going to sit in temperatures ranging from single digits to the low fifties, in a shop that is likely unheated or only intermittently heated, on a lift that is bearing the vehicle weight continuously for roughly five months. Vehicle storage lifts are designed to handle that duty cycle, but the choices you make at purchase determine how well the lift ages under it.
Cold matters because hydraulic fluid thickens and cable lubrication congeals. A lift that raises a vehicle in July at ambient 80 degrees will lift the same vehicle in January at ambient 15 degrees more slowly, and the first few strokes on a cold morning will noticeably strain the motor. That is normal. It is also a reason we recommend cold-climate hydraulic fluid for any vehicle storage lifts installed in central or northern Iowa, and it is a reason we tell farm-shop owners to cycle the lift up and down empty once a month during the storage season to keep the seals happy. His summer show truck was a 1970s pickup at roughly 4,200 pounds. His winter pickup was a modern half-ton at roughly 5,400 pounds. He also mentioned he might occasionally park a farm side-by-side, at roughly 1,800 pounds. None of those weights individually pushes the capacity of vehicle storage lifts in the 7,000 to 9,000 pound range. But we still recommended 9,000 pounds rather than 7,000, for two reasons that come up on every farm-shop call.
First, farm vehicle fleets evolve. The half-ton might get replaced by a three-quarter-ton in five years, and the three-quarter-ton runs closer to 7,500 pounds loaded. Second, the runway spread and column strength on a 9,000-pound lift is typically better even at lighter loads, because the manufacturer built the crossmembers to a higher standard. You do not gain much by buying to the exact weight of your current fleet, and you can lose flexibility. For a farm shop especially, where the vehicle mix changes with the operation, buying up one capacity tier is almost always the right call. The incremental cost is real but not large.
Lift height for tractor and pickup access
Farm shops sometimes ask about lifting a small utility tractor on a storage lift, and the answer is no. Utility tractors are wider than the runway spread on most vehicle storage lifts, heavier at the rear axle than the specs allow, and geometrically wrong for a 4-post design. If you want to lift a tractor, the answer is a shop crane, a floor jack under a proper lift point, or a portable heavy-duty scissor lift. Storage lifts are for vehicles, and specifically for vehicles with a wheelbase between about 90 and 155 inches.
What storage lifts do well for a farm shop is give you access to the underside of a pickup for regular maintenance you would otherwise skip. Oil changes, driveshaft grease, brake inspections, and undercarriage checks all become weekly-easy jobs when the pickup is at chest height instead of on your back in a gravel bay. The height dimension to check on the spec sheet is maximum lift height, which on most home-garage-tier storage lifts lands somewhere between 66 and 78 inches. That is enough headroom for a person 6 feet tall to walk under a raised pickup and work standing up. Confirm the number for the specific model you are looking at, because it varies more than most marketing materials show.
Standard versus extended runway length
Runway length is the spec that decides which vehicles fit and which do not. Standard 4-post vehicle storage lifts have runway lengths between roughly 155 and 175 inches. Extended-runway versions run from 185 up to 220 inches or more. For a typical passenger car with a wheelbase of 105 to 115 inches, standard runway is plenty. For a full-size crew-cab pickup with an 8-foot bed and a 165-inch wheelbase, standard runway is marginal. For a farm shop that might see a long-bed one-ton at some point, extended is the safer buy.
His summer show truck was a short-bed with a 115-inch wheelbase. Standard runway would have handled it fine. But he mentioned in passing that his brother had a 2001 Silverado 3500 dually with a 168-inch wheelbase that occasionally needed work. That off-hand comment moved him from standard to extended. Extended runway on vehicle storage lifts costs a modest premium at order and cannot be added later. Just like column spacing, this is a spec where paying up front for flexibility is worth it, especially in a farm-shop context where the vehicle mix genuinely might change year to year.
Locking positions and mechanical safeties
For seasonal storage, mechanical locks matter more than any other spec on the lift. Vehicle storage lifts hold their raised height using mechanical safety ladders, typically with locking positions every 3 to 6 inches. Hydraulics hold pressure while the lift is being raised or lowered, but for anything longer than a maintenance cycle, the mechanical ladders are what actually carry the load. If a hydraulic seal fails while a vehicle is stored on a lift for six months without mechanical locks engaged, the vehicle can settle or drop. That is a bad day for the vehicle and a worse day for anything parked underneath.
We specifically look for lifts with at least 12 to 14 locking positions across the working range, with pawls that are large enough to inspect without dismantling the lift. Some cheap 4-post designs have only 6 or 8 positions with small pawls that are hard to check. On a lift you plan to store a vehicle on for months at a time, that is not what you want. The pawls should be visible, chunky, and rated to hold the full capacity of the lift indefinitely. Ask the specific question when comparing models: how many locking positions, how large are the pawls, and is the ladder inspectable from the outside without a tool.
Brand comparison for farm shop use
For a farm shop application, our brand shortlist for vehicle storage lifts is generally Rotary and BendPak on the professional side, and Atlas on the home-garage side. Rotary and BendPak both have long dealer networks and reliable parts availability, which matters when you are 30 minutes from Waterloo and want a cable replaced without waiting three weeks. Atlas is a solid choice at the more affordable tier and has serviceable parts availability for a home garage that does not see daily commercial use.
The specific spec differences between brands come down to capacity ratings, runway length options, and column construction. Rotary tends to overbuild the column base plates, which is a small but real advantage on any slab that might be borderline. BendPak tends to have the widest option catalog, which lets you spec a lift closer to exactly your needs. For a farm shop we usually land on a mid-tier BendPak or a Rotary equivalent with extended runway and 9,000-pound capacity, and both brands will hold up under seasonal storage duty for two decades without meaningful problems. The choice between the two often comes down to lead time on the specific model in the specific color the customer wants.
The pre-purchase spec sheet
Here is the checklist we ended up with for his farm shop, and it is the same one we would use for any similar rural install. Capacity: 9,000 pounds, one tier above the current vehicle mix. Runway length: extended, minimum 190 inches. Column spacing: wide-frame if any farm-side-by-side or wider vehicle is on the maybe list. Lift height: maximum in the range of 70 to 78 inches to allow walk-under access. Locking positions: minimum 12 with externally inspectable pawls.
Hydraulic fluid: cold-weather formulation for Iowa storage. Cables: verify manufacturer warranty and inspection interval. Casters: recommended even for a fixed installation, because farm-shop layouts evolve. Electrical: 240-volt single-phase preferred over 120, with a 30-amp dedicated circuit. Concrete: 4-inch minimum, verified by drill test before the delivery date, with rebar or reinforcing mesh. Run that spec sheet against any lift you are considering and you will land on a suitable choice. Skip any single item and you may end up living with a compromise for the next 20 years. Vehicle storage lifts are long-lived equipment, and the choices you make once are the choices you live with.
