He’d found a used unit advertised locally at a price that seemed too good to pass up, and he wanted us to inspect it before he committed. That’s exactly the right instinct, and it’s one we wish more buyers had before wiring money to a stranger.

When we got out to look at the unit with him, the arms had visible wear at the pivot points and the cables showed fraying that wouldn’t pass a safety inspection without replacement parts. The seller didn’t disclose any of that upfront. This is the reality of buying used sight-unseen: you’re not just buying steel, you’re buying an unknown maintenance history. Building the Used vs. New Decision Framework

We walked him through four questions we ask every buyer considering a used purchase over a new one. First: how many cycles per day will this thing see? Daily maintenance work in a commercial bay means dozens of lifts and lowers a week, which accelerates wear on cables, arms, and hydraulics far faster than occasional home use. Second: can you verify service history? A private seller with no paperwork is a red flag regardless of price. Third: what’s the true landed cost once you add inspection, freight, and likely part replacement? And fourth: does the used unit even meet current safety standards, or is it old enough that parts availability becomes its own problem.

For this particular buyer, running those four questions against the used option he’d found made the decision easy. The used lift needed new cables, a rebuild kit, and a certified inspection just to get to a baseline he could trust — and once we priced that out, it landed close enough to a new unit that the decision flipped. We’re not against used equipment in general; plenty of shops run reconditioned lifts safely for years. But the math has to actually work, and too often buyers skip the math because the sticker price looks good.

What We Installed Instead

Financing and Total Cost Considerations

Cost is obviously part of every decision, and we try to be straightforward about it rather than pushing buyers toward whatever’s most profitable for us. New equipment carries a manufacturer warranty and predictable parts availability, which has real value over a ten-year ownership window. Used equipment can make sense if the price gap is large enough to offset the unknowns, but that gap has to be real after you account for inspection, shipping, and likely repairs.
