It refers to the duty cycle the lift is engineered for — a shop lift raises and lowers 15 to 30 vehicles a day and expects to do that for 15 to 20 years. The columns are heavier, the cables are larger diameter, the hydraulic cylinders use commercial-grade seals, and the entire lift is expected to hold ALI Gold Label certification from the Automotive Lift Institute. Commercial car lifts also carry longer manufacturer warranties on structural components and shorter but real warranties on hydraulic and electrical parts. If a lift does not carry ALI certification, we do not sell it into a commercial bay.
Capacity Planning for a Commercial Shop
Capacity is where most first-time commercial buyers under-buy. A 9,000 lb 2-post looks fine on paper for passenger cars, but the moment a diesel 3/4-ton comes in the door the shop is stuck. Our default recommendation for general-service commercial car lifts in Iowa is 10,000 lb for cars-and-half-tons work and 12,000 to 15,000 lb for any shop that touches diesel, dually, or medium-duty regularly. ALI Gold Label certification is not optional for commercial car lifts in most Iowa municipalities. We verify concrete thickness (minimum 4 inches at 3,000 PSI for most 2-post lifts, 4.25 to 5 inches for heavy-duty and mobile columns), rebar or fiber reinforcement, ceiling height, header clearance, and bay-to-bay spacing before we release a delivery date. On install day the crew drills anchors to spec, torques every fastener, sets the columns plumb, dresses hoses cleanly, bleeds the cylinders, and load-tests each lift with a shop vehicle. On a six-lift shop that is a five-day stretch; on a two-lift replacement it is one long day.
