Every few weeks somebody calls our shop in Ames asking for a straight answer instead of a spec sheet, and that is exactly why we put this four post alignment lift guide together. A general repair shop in eastern Iowa recently wanted to add alignments without giving up the bay’s flat-stall usefulness, and the questions were the same ones we hear constantly: how long do the runways need to be, do the turnplates come with it, how much concrete is under there, and what happens when the aligner brand changes in five years. Start With What You Actually Align

Before capacity or brand, we ask what rolls through the door. A shop that does passenger cars, crossovers, and the occasional half-ton pickup is a different machine than a shop chasing 3/4-ton diesels with lift kits and 8-foot beds. Capacity is the easy part — 12,000 lb covers most light-truck work and 14,000 lb gives you headroom — but runway length and wheelbase range are where people get burned. A lift rated for a 175-inch wheelbase will physically hold a crew cab long bed, but the front turnplates end up in the wrong place and you are fighting the setup on every job.

The second question is volume. If alignments are a side item you sell three times a week, a mid-tier lift with basic slip plates is plenty. If you are running a dedicated alignment stall eight hours a day, spend the money on heavier runways, better locks, and an air-actuated turnplate release so the tech is not crawling around on the deck. We have replaced more than one bargain lift after two years because the shop underestimated its own throughput. Two Post, Scissor, or Four Post

We get pushed on this constantly, and the answer depends on whether alignment is your primary use or a secondary one. A four post gives you drive-on convenience, a stable full-length platform, and integrated turnplate and slip plate pockets — which is why nearly every dedicated alignment bay in Iowa runs one. It also doubles as storage or a general service lift when paired with rolling jacks, which matters in a shop where every square foot earns its keep.

Two post lifts can do alignment work with the right accessories, but you are lifting by the frame or pinch welds and the geometry is less repeatable. Short version: scissors save floor space and look clean, four posts give you longer runways, easier wheel-off access, and more resale value. If you plan to sell alignments as a profit center for the next fifteen years, the four post is the safer bet almost every time.

Runways, Turnplates, and Slip Plates

An alignment-specific four post is not just a service lift with a sticker on it. The front of the runways has machined pockets for turnplates, the rear has recessed slip plates, and the deck is built flat enough that your aligner’s compensation routine does not fight you. Turnplates should sit flush with the runway surface and lock positively — a plate that creeps while the tech is setting toe will cost you a comeback.

Rear slip plates matter more than people think. On a thrust-angle alignment you need the rear wheels free to settle, and a sticky or corroded slip plate quietly skews your readings. We service plenty of lifts where the plates have not moved in three years because nobody ever cleaned them. Pull them, wipe the ways, and check the release mechanism at least twice a year. On the front, air-release turnplates are worth the upcharge in a busy bay simply because techs will actually use them. Also confirm the runway width matches your wheel range: too narrow and dually rears hang over, too wide and small cars sit awkwardly on the plates. Concrete, Anchors, and Ceiling Height

Concrete is the single most common surprise on installs. A four post spreads load across four base plates, so it is more forgiving than a two post, but the manufacturer still specifies a minimum slab thickness and compressive strength — typically 4 to 6 inches of properly cured concrete at 3,000 PSI or better. Old Iowa shop floors are frequently thinner than the owner believes, and we have core-drilled slabs that turned out to be barely three inches over dirt.

If the slab does not qualify, the fix is a cut-and-pour pad under each column footprint. It adds a few days and some cost, but it is far cheaper than chasing cracked concrete later. Ceiling height is the other constraint: add your maximum rise to the tallest vehicle you service plus clearance for the overhead crossbar or hose routing, and leave room for lighting. In leased buildings, also check where the drains and floor slope sit, because a sloped floor means shimming every column. Getting It Level — The Step Nobody Skips Twice

A general-purpose four post can be a little out of level and nobody notices. An alignment lift cannot. The runways have to be coplanar within tight tolerance or your aligner will either refuse to compensate or hand you numbers that look fine and drive wrong. We level with a rotary laser, shim under the base plates with steel plates rather than washers, and re-check after the first few cycles once the cables have seated.

Cable equalization is part of that same job. Four post lifts raise on four cables, and if one runs long the runway twists under load. New installs almost always need a re-tension after break-in, and we tell shops to expect us back or to check it themselves at the 30-day mark. After that, a quarterly look at cable tension, sheave condition, and lock engagement keeps the deck honest. If your aligner suddenly starts throwing compensation errors on vehicles it handled fine last month, level and cable tension are the first two things to check — not the alignment heads. We have made that drive enough times to say it plainly.

Lighting, Aligner Integration, and Bay Layout

The best alignment bays we install share a few traits that have nothing to do with the lift model. Lighting comes first: overhead LED strips down both sides of the runways plus an underhood or under-vehicle light means the tech sees the tie rod he is adjusting. Poor lighting is the cheapest fix in any shop and the most consistently ignored.

Aligner integration is next. Camera-based systems need a clear sightline to the wheel targets, so plan the tower or overhead beam position before the lift is anchored, not after. Leave the tech room to walk both sides with a target in hand and room at the rear to open a hood or tailgate without hitting a wall. Run air to the front of the lift for turnplate release and impact work, and put a stool or cart within reach because alignment work involves a lot of small adjustments. None of this is in the manufacturer’s manual, but it is the difference between a bay that turns four alignments a day and one that turns two. Maintenance, Parts, and Making It Last Twenty Years

Four post lifts are mechanically simple, which is why a well-maintained one lasts decades. The wear items are cables, sheaves, lock latches, hydraulic hoses, and the cylinder seal. Cables are the one we replace most — they fatigue at the sheaves and at the anchor ends, and a frayed strand is your notice to order a set rather than a reason to keep running it. Build a short routine: monthly visual on cables and locks, quarterly cable tension and level check, annual fluid inspection and a full function test of every lock position. Keep the slip plates and turnplates clean and lubricated. Grease the sheave pins per the manual. Log it — an inspection record protects you if anything ever goes wrong and makes resale easier.
