Some scissor lifts and parallelogram alignment lifts are technically drive-on too, but 90 percent of the time when someone calls us asking for a drive on auto lift, they want a 4-post. The appeal is simple: no arm placement, no picking up frame contact points, no worrying about a vehicle rolling off a swing arm. The car sits on its own tires, locked in place by mechanical safety catches. That’s why it dominates home garages and light-service shops.
A caller from an Iowa small town last winter framed it well: he wanted the most economical lift he could find, just for a 4,500 lb daily driver in his garage, no compressor, no ambitions of a full service bay. That is a textbook drive-on shopper. He did not need a 2-post; he needed a reliable, no-drama lift that gets a car up and holds it there.
Storage capacity and rated weight
Home-storage drive-on lifts start at 7,000 lb capacity and step up from there. The most common home-garage size is 9,000 lb — a BendPak HD-9 or an equivalent from Atlas or Rotary. That covers virtually every passenger vehicle sold in the last twenty years. Once you are putting three-quarter-ton or one-ton pickups on the lift, jump to a 10,000 or 12,000 lb model like the Rotary SPO12. Runway length and vehicle fit
Standard runways are around 14 to 15 feet long — long enough for most sedans, coupes, and shorter pickups. Long-wheelbase trucks (F-250 crew cabs, extended vans, some SUVs) need extended-length runways, usually 17 feet or more. Measure your longest vehicle from tire to tire, add roughly 18 inches of overhang tolerance, and match that to the published runway length of the lift. Overhang is fine, but the tires themselves have to sit on the runway.
Ceiling height for a drive on auto lift
The lift itself is usually not the ceiling limit — the vehicle stored on top is. Take your highest vehicle, add the maximum lift rise, and add a couple inches of clearance. For a full-size pickup or SUV storage stack, that math typically lands at 11 to 12 feet of clear ceiling. Lower sports cars and sedans can fit under 10-foot ceilings comfortably. This is the number that catches Iowa buyers by surprise in older attached garages, and it is why we ask about ceiling on the very first phone call.
Concrete and anchoring
Most home-storage 4-post drive-on lifts are technically freestanding — the manufacturer allows use without anchoring the columns into the floor. That said, we anchor every install we do. A single anchor per column keeps the lift from walking under repeated use, especially if you are rolling vehicles on and off frequently. Four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete is the industry minimum. If your slab is thinner or cracked, we bring that up before install day — a drive on auto lift is only as stable as what is under it.
