What a rotary pad lift actually is (and isn’t)
A rotary pad lift is any Rotary-brand two-post lift where the vehicle rises on contact pads placed at the four factory-recommended lift points on the frame or unibody, rather than being carried by drive-on runways or by wheel engagement. Rotary’s product line has centered on this configuration for decades because it gives techs full access to the wheels, brakes, exhaust, and drivetrain from underneath.
On the shop floor, the pad is the piece that actually touches the vehicle — a rubber or urethane puck seated on top of a telescoping screw or a stackable adapter, mounted to the end of an arm that swings out from the column. When someone tells us “my pad lift is worn out,” nine times out of ten they mean the rubber pads are cracked, the screw threads are galled, or the stackable adapters are lost. Not the whole machine. Understanding the anatomy matters, because the fix is usually a parts order in the low hundreds, not a five-figure replacement lift.
Why arm pads and screw pads wear out
Arm pads take an enormous amount of abuse. A busy dealership will cycle its two-post lifts twenty or thirty times a day, and every cycle grinds a small amount of grit into the top of the pad. After a couple of Iowa winters worth of road salt, dropped tools, and the occasional off-center lift point, the rubber cracks, the metal cup deforms, or a screw thread strips. We had a Chrysler dealership in the Des Moines metro call us last summer because a tech needed new arm pads for his rotary two-post lift — the pads were original to the machine and the shop had been slipping vehicles off them for months.
Screw pads fail differently. The screw threads inside the arm live in a dirty environment and eventually seize, either fully extended or fully collapsed. Once that happens the tech can’t adjust pad height to the manufacturer’s lift point and starts stacking whatever wood or blocks are on the floor. That is a rotary pad lift about two shifts away from a serious incident, and it is entirely fixable with the right replacement screw-pad assembly. Pad adapters and why service bulletins keep coming out
Pad adapters — the stackable pucks or tall extensions that raise the contact point up to a hidden frame rail on a modern unibody — are a moving target. Vehicle manufacturers keep pushing lift points higher and hiding them behind pinch-weld covers, and lift manufacturers keep issuing service bulletins to match. Just this past summer, Challenger published a service bulletin about a specific stackable pad adapter that had to be inspected and, in some cases, replaced. Rotary publishes its own technical bulletins in parallel, and the two brands do not share adapter part numbers, even when they look similar.
What that means for an owner running a rotary pad lift: adapters are not a “buy once, forget forever” part. When we quote a new machine we include the current adapter kit that matches Rotary’s most recent bulletin, and when we service an older lift we ask what year the adapters were purchased. If they predate the most recent bulletin, we recommend swapping them. It’s a small line item that keeps the shop out of trouble with both ALI inspectors and the insurance carrier.
Rotary versus Challenger for a new pad-style lift
Buyers in Iowa almost always ask us to price a Rotary lift and a Challenger lift side by side. The honest answer is that the two brands are closer than most shops realize. Challenger has been American-made for a long stretch of its history; Rotary has as well, with plants in the United States and long-standing dealer networks. Both build capable two-post pad-style lifts in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb class that will run for twenty-plus years in a normal shop.
Where they diverge is in the details. Rotary’s SPOA10 family has telescoping screw pads and drop-end arms as a standard configuration, while Challenger’s equivalents lean on specific arm geometries and a slightly different lock ladder. Price teeter-totters based on tariffs and freight month to month. A repeat customer of ours recently ordered five red Rotary 10K lifts in one shot because that’s what his shop was already trained on — standardization matters. If your techs already know one brand, we usually recommend staying with it unless there is a real reason to switch.
Screw pads, drop-end arms, and telescoping features that matter
Once you get past the badge, the features that actually earn their keep on a rotary pad lift are the ones that let the tech reach the correct lift point on a wider range of vehicles without stacking blocks. Double-telescoping screw pads give real height adjustability — you can go low enough for a lifted pickup with a running board in the way, and high enough for an unibody crossover with hidden pinch-welds. Drop-end arms provide a lower minimum pad height, which is what keeps low-clearance sports cars and lowered trucks from getting scraped as they roll onto the lift.
Telescoping arm designs cover a wider range of wheelbases from the same lift, so a shop that works on a Miata one hour and a dually the next doesn’t have to reposition the vehicle three times to find the pads. Oversized carriages, single-piece columns, and A36 steel base plates are the structural pieces that keep the geometry honest for a decade or more. Sizing is the conversation we’d rather have before you buy than after. A general-service shop working sedans, half-ton pickups, and the occasional three-quarter-ton is well served by a 10,000 lb rotary pad lift with symmetric or asymmetric arms depending on bay layout. Quick-lube operations that see nothing but passenger cars can sometimes get away with a lighter setup, and we’ve quoted quick-lube pad lifts for shops that specifically wanted a fast in-and-out configuration.
Heavier work — three-quarter-ton and one-ton diesels, fleet vans, class-3 and class-4 trucks — pushes you into the 12,000 to 15,000 lb range, and heavy medium-duty gets its own conversation about column height and arm reach.
