Every commercial two-post we install ships with mechanical arm locks, either the toothed collar you can see through the arm boot or the pin-style you flip with your foot before you raise. Both do the same job: they keep the arm from swinging out from under the vehicle when a body man leans hard on a quarter panel or a rocker seam. What you want to check on any lift you are considering is whether that lock engages the moment weight comes off the ground, not only once the vehicle is at full height. Reading safety-cam engagement on your auto lift
The second thing a foreman should be trained to check is that the safety cams on both columns of your auto lift engage on the same tooth. If the driver side is on tooth twelve and the passenger side is on tooth thirteen, you have a load that is very slightly tilted, and over time that tilt worries the equalizer cables. When we hand over a two-post install, we teach every tech on the floor to raise the vehicle, listen for the double click as both sides drop into the locks, and glance up at the cam window to confirm the pin is seated flush. The columns sit at a slight angle, the shorter front arms tuck under the front wheel wells, and the door opens fully into the aisle instead of banging the column. Sizing up costs a few hundred dollars per thousand pounds at purchase and nothing at all once the lift is on the floor, so if you are within a hair, size up. Column height and ceiling clearance in an eastern Nebraska shop
Standard clear height on a commercial two-post is around twelve feet from floor to overhead beam, which fits most Nebraska body shops built after 1990 and almost no shop built before then. If your ceiling is under twelve feet, we quote a low-ceiling or shorty column instead, and we lose a few inches of rise but keep the shop legal. If your ceiling is over fourteen feet, we can put you on a tall-column unit and let a full-size van roof clear the crossbar comfortably. A common pitfall in Nebraska metal buildings is running gas lines or fluorescent tracks directly above the future lift bay. Measure to the lowest object over the exact footprint, not to the peak of the roof. We measure it for you on the site walk, and we take photos of every overhead obstruction with tape on the concrete before we quote. That way the crossbar height on your paperwork matches the crossbar height that will actually clear the vent, and there are no surprises on install day.
Installation realities: concrete, power, and permits
The three questions we ask every shop before an install are how thick your slab is, what your service panel is running, and whether your city requires a mechanical permit. In a typical eastern Nebraska metal shop, we want four inches of unreinforced concrete at 3,000 psi minimum for a two-post, and six inches for anything above 15,000 pounds. On power, most single-cylinder lifts run on 208 or 230 volt single phase and pull a 20-amp breaker, which almost every shop already has. Three-phase is only required on a few of the larger commercial and heavy-duty models. On permits, Omaha, Lincoln, and Council Bluffs each have their own inspector, and we handle the paperwork so your foreman does not chase forms.
