A good car lift safety inspection checklist is the cheapest insurance a shop will ever buy, and we say that as the crew that gets called after the inspection nobody did. What we see over and over is not exotic failure — it is a frayed cable that had been fraying for two years, an arm restraint that stopped clicking last winter, or an anchor bolt spinning free in cracked concrete. All of it is catchable by a person with a flashlight and ten minutes. Here is exactly how we walk a lift.

Start With the Data Plate, Not the Lift
Every inspection we do begins at the serial tag, because you cannot judge a lift you cannot identify. The plate gives you brand, model, capacity, and the manufacture date. Write all four down on your car lift safety inspection checklist before you touch anything else. We have walked into shops where the crew swore they had a 12,000 lb lift and the tag read 9,000 — they had been putting 3/4-ton diesels on it for years. We have also found tags that were painted over so many times the capacity was unreadable, which means every tech in that building was guessing. If the plate is gone, that is a finding on its own; the manufacturer can usually reissue one from the serial stamped on the column.
While you are at the column, look for the ALI Gold Label or certification decal and the posted operating instructions. ANSI/ALI standards expect the lift to carry legible safety instructions and load capacity where the operator can see them, and an OSHA walkthrough will ask about it. Then check the lift’s paperwork trail: is there a log of past inspections, a record of the last cable replacement, an installation certificate? In Iowa we run into a lot of used lifts bought at auction and dropped in a new building with zero history. That is fine — but the first thing we do is establish a baseline record so next year’s inspection has something to compare against.
The Daily Walkaround Any Tech Can Do in Two Minutes
The daily portion is not paperwork, it is habit. Before the first car goes up, the operator should look at the floor under the lift for fresh hydraulic fluid, look at the arms for cracked welds or bent adapters, and confirm the arm restraints engage with an audible click when the arms swing. Push each swing arm by hand at the raised position — it should not rotate. Then raise the lift empty a couple of feet and listen. A healthy two-post lift makes one sound. A lift with a dry slider block, a stretched cable, or air in the cylinder makes several.
The daily items on our car lift safety inspection checklist also include the safety locks. Raise the lift, let it settle onto the locks, and listen for the same number of clicks on both columns. Uneven locking is one of the most common issues we correct in central Iowa shops, and it almost always traces back to equalizer cable tension. Check that the lock release handle returns fully to its rest position, that the air line to the lock cylinders is not kinked or dry-rotted, and that the overhead shutoff bar on a clearfloor lift actually trips. Finally, look at your own habits: are pads set at the manufacturer’s lift points, is the vehicle centered, and does anybody bounce a car to check stability? That last one is not a test, it is a bad day waiting.
Cables, Chains and Sheaves Get the Closest Look
If we had to pick one component that ends lifts, it is the cable. On two-post lifts the equalizer cables keep carriages synchronized; on four-post lifts the lifting cables carry the entire load. Run a rag along the full length of each cable — the rag snags on broken wires long before your eye finds them. Replacement criteria are specific: broken wires in a single lay, a flattened or kinked section, corrosion or rust bleeding from the core, reduced diameter, or any birdcaging. Iowa winters make this worse than most states, because road salt rides in on the vehicle and drips straight onto the cable and sheave.
Inspect the sheaves themselves for flat spots, chipped edges, and bearings that do not spin freely. A seized sheave saws through a new cable in months. On chain-driven lifts, measure stretch against spec and check for stiff links and side plate wear. We tell shops to treat cables as a set — replacing one and leaving its mate means mismatched stretch and lock timing that never quite comes right. Anchors and Concrete: The Failure Nobody Watches
Anchor bolts are the quietest hazard in the shop. We check torque on every anchor with a torque wrench — not a breaker bar and a feeling — against the manufacturer’s spec, which is commonly in the 85 to 110 ft-lb range depending on the lift. If a bolt spins without building torque, the concrete around it is compromised and the anchor has to be relocated or the slab repaired. Look for radial cracks spidering away from base plates, spalling, and any gap under the base plate that lets it rock when the lift is loaded.
Slab thickness and strength matter more than most owners realize. Most 10,000 lb two-post lifts require at least four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and heavier equipment needs more. In Iowa we see a lot of older buildings with thin slabs poured for storage, not for lifting, and we have cored more than one floor in a Story County shop to find three inches over dirt. Also check that shims, if used, are steel and stacked no higher than the manufacturer allows — we have found hardwood shims and stacked washers doing structural work. Hydraulics, Air and Electrical
Pull the power unit reservoir cap and check fluid level and condition. Milky fluid means water intrusion, and in an unheated Iowa bay that water freezes and takes seals with it. Dark, burnt-smelling fluid means the pump has been running hot. Look at every fitting, hose and cylinder rod for weeping — a wet film that keeps coming back is a slow failure, not a drip you wipe away. Cylinder rods should be smooth and unpitted; a scored rod chews a new seal in a week.
On the air side, check the lock release cylinders, the regulator setting, and every line for dry rot at the fittings. Electrically, we verify the disconnect works, the motor is wired to the correct voltage and phase, the cord is not spliced or run across the floor, and the control box is not a rat’s nest of wire nuts. Any lift that goes up when you release the button, or that drifts down more than a fraction of an inch under load, gets tagged out on the spot. Undo all of it and restore the lift to factory configuration.
Daily, Monthly and Annual: Splitting the Checklist Up
The reason inspections get skipped is that shops try to do everything every time. We split ours into three tiers. Daily is the two-minute walkaround: fluid on the floor, arm restraints clicking, locks engaging evenly, pads and adapters accounted for, controls returning to neutral. Monthly adds the maintenance work — lubricate columns and slider blocks, grease sheave pins, check cable tension and equalization, torque a sample of anchors, inspect the full length of every cable, and verify the overhead shutoff. Monthly is also when we top off hydraulic fluid and clean the lock mechanisms, because salt and brake dust pack them solid.
Annual is the formal one, and ANSI/ALI ALOIS calls for it to be performed by a qualified lift inspector. That inspection is documented, covers structural components, load testing considerations, and generates a written record you can hand to an insurance adjuster or an OSHA inspector. What We Do When a Lift Fails Inspection
Failing an inspection is not a disaster — using a failed lift is. When we find a defect, the lift comes out of service immediately: lower it fully, lock out the disconnect, tag the controls, and tell every tech on the floor verbally, because a paper tag alone gets ignored on a busy Saturday. Then we sort findings into two buckets. Safety-critical items — cables, locks, anchors, structural cracks, cylinder failure — are stop-work. Wear items like scuffed pads, faded decals, or a sticking lock handle get scheduled.
Parts availability is usually the real question. We stock and source for Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, Atlas and the older brands that have changed hands three times, and we can usually identify a component from a photo and a serial number even when the model plate is long gone. Many older lifts are worth restoring; some are past it, and we will tell you honestly which one you have rather than sell you a rebuild that costs more than a replacement.
