A first-time home garage buyer in Ames called us in April, sheepishly, to ask if he could actually justify an auto lift for himself. His main use case was a wheel bearing job on his teenager’s Civic that he had already tried once on jack stands and hated. Every other job he did was ordinary maintenance. Two-car garage, 11-foot ceiling, single-family neighborhood, first lift purchase in his life. He wanted a straightforward buyer’s guide, not a sales pitch. Here is what we walked him through, step by step.

The first-time auto lift buyer’s honest question: is it worth it?
The most common thing a first-time buyer asks is whether an auto lift makes financial sense for a home garage. The answer, from the shop that installs them, is that it depends on what you value. A dealership wheel bearing job on a Civic costs several hundred dollars in labor. A brake job costs a similar figure. A serious buyer will amortize the lift over ten years and roughly forty maintenance jobs and land at a net savings inside year three. But the number nobody puts on the spreadsheet is the standing-upright factor. A lift changes the physical experience of car work in a way that jack stands cannot. That is often the reason people buy, and it is a legitimate one.
Step one: measure your garage before you shop
Before you look at any auto lift model, get a tape measure and record five numbers. Floor-to-ceiling height. Width between side walls or obstructions. Depth from garage door to back wall. Location of the electrical service panel. Slab thickness if you know it, or call your builder if you do not. The Ames first-time buyer’s garage was 24 feet wide, 22 deep, 11 feet high, panel on the side wall, four-inch slab. Those five numbers determine which lifts will fit and which will not. Bring them to the phone call. If the ceiling comes back under 11 feet, most standard two-post lifts do not fit, and you are into low-profile territory or floorplate territory instead.
Step two: think about the tallest vehicle you will ever lift
Wheel bearing work on a Civic is easy. A minivan is easy. A full-size SUV starts to test ceiling clearance because at maximum lift height, the SUV roof plus its optional roof rack pushes toward the garage ceiling. Add the drive-under a normal two-post lift needs to give you at full height, roughly 78 to 80 inches, and the math gets tight in an 11-foot garage with a lifted vehicle at 76 inches tall. Do the math before you buy. For the Ames buyer, the tallest vehicle in the family was the Civic and a Camry, both under 60 inches, so ceiling was easy. That will not be true for everyone. Step three: site survey and slab check for your first auto lift
Our Ames team will do a free site survey inside our normal service radius. We walk the garage, measure the slab thickness with a small core drill in an inconspicuous corner, verify electrical service, and identify anchor bolt locations that avoid rebar or radiant floor tubing. We recommended no pour modifications and confirmed the anchor pattern would clear his floor drain. Total site survey time was 45 minutes. He did not pay for it. Step four: pick a lift that matches your actual work
Wheel bearing service, brake work, and general maintenance is the sweet spot for a 9,000 or 10,000-pound symmetric two-post. The Ames buyer looked briefly at a scissor lift and a mid-rise, but scissors do not let you get to the wheel bearings from the axle side, they only lift the frame, and mid-rise lifts do not go high enough to walk under. For his use case, symmetric two-post was the correct answer, and the model he settled on was a BendPak XPR-10AS-LP with a lower-profile overhead beam configured for 11-foot ceilings. Rotary made a similar model. Both would have worked. He picked BendPak on delivered price and the promise of a two-week install slot.
Step five: installation day and what to expect
Install day for a first-time home lift takes six to eight hours with a two-person crew. We arrive with the lift on a lift-gate truck, unload with a pallet jack, and walk the columns into position. Anchor drilling takes an hour. Column setup and plumb takes another. Cable and hydraulic line run takes two. Test lift and safety lock verification takes an hour. The homeowner does not need to be present the whole time but should be there for the walk-through at the end. The Ames buyer told us later that the walk-through, where we showed him exactly how to inspect his own cables every quarter, was the part that made him feel like a lift owner rather than a lift renter.
