We’ve walked into more than one Iowa garage where the owner had already picked a lift model, paid a deposit somewhere else, and only then discovered the ceiling was six inches too short or the slab wasn’t rated for four-post loads. Every home garage lift site survey we run starts with the same question: what are you actually trying to do with this space? Some owners want to store a second vehicle overhead. Others want a real workspace to do brake jobs, suspension work, or a full restoration. Those two goals point to completely different lift categories, and no online configurator can make that call for you. A phone conversation and a set of photos gets us most of the way there, but nothing replaces someone standing in the garage with a tape measure and a laser level.

We’ve seen homeowners order a lift based on a neighbor’s setup or a video they watched online, only to find out their garage has none of the same conditions. Ceiling trusses run a different direction. The door opening is narrower. The panel is fifty feet away instead of ten. We also check the door header height and width, since a mid-rise or four-post lift with a raised vehicle sometimes can’t clear the garage door opening on the way in or out. This is one of the most common reasons homeowners end up choosing a lower-profile scissor or mid-rise lift instead of a full two-post unit. None of this is guesswork once we’ve done the measurements — it’s simple math that tells us which lift models are physically possible in your space before you spend a dollar.

Concrete Slab Thickness and Condition

The slab is doing all the structural work once a vehicle is in the air, and it’s the part homeowners are least equipped to evaluate on their own. We look at slab thickness, whether it’s reinforced, how old it is, and whether there are visible cracks, expansion joints, or signs of previous water damage nearby. Most two-post and four-post lifts have a minimum slab thickness and cure-time requirement from the manufacturer, and anchoring into a slab that doesn’t meet that spec voids the warranty and creates a real safety risk down the line.

In older Iowa homes we sometimes find garage slabs that were poured thinner than modern code, or slabs with a decorative overlay that isn’t structural at all. Most home lifts run on a dedicated 220-volt circuit, and the distance from your electrical panel to the lift’s planned location matters more than people expect. A long run needs a heavier gauge wire, and if your panel is already near capacity, adding a lift circuit might mean an upgrade you weren’t planning on. We also flag anything unusual — detached garages that need a trenched line from the main panel, older homes with fuse panels instead of breakers, or shared circuits already carrying a compressor or water heater. Vehicle Type and Weight Requirements

What you’re lifting drives the whole equipment choice. A daily driver sedan has very different requirements than a lifted pickup, a vintage restoration project, or a mix of both over the years. We ask about current vehicles and future plans, because buying a lift rated too close to your heaviest vehicle’s weight leaves no margin, and undersizing is one of the most common regrets we hear about from owners who bought based on price alone. Is there room to walk around the vehicle, roll a jack under it, or park a second car in the same bay?
