An Ankeny farm shop owner called us in the middle of picking a lift for the machine shed he had converted into a two-bay home garage. He was doing differential fluid changes and general chassis work on his family fleet plus a couple of neighbor jobs, and he wanted to know before he spent a dime whether the cylinder on his prospective lift would be rebuildable in twelve years, or whether he was buying a disposable machine. Nobody who sells auto lifts for home garage owners wants to lead with that question. We think it belongs at the top of the checklist.

Item one: is the cylinder rebuildable?
Not every home garage lift ships with a cylinder you can service. Cheaper imports sometimes weld the gland cap and give you a throw-away tube; better lifts thread the gland and let you pull the piston, replace the seal stack, and put the lift back in service in an afternoon. Before you buy a lift, ask the seller to point at a rebuild kit part number for the exact cylinder in the box. If they can name one, you are looking at a serviceable lift. If they hesitate or steer you to a whole-cylinder replacement, you are looking at a lift with a shorter honest lifespan. For auto lifts for home garage owners, this is the single most important item on the checklist because a cylinder is the one part that will eventually leak, and being able to reseal it turns a five-figure decision into a two-figure part order.
Item two: cable inspection intervals and part numbers
Every four-post lift and every two-post scissor-style equivalent uses steel cables in tension, and those cables have a real service life. Not a scary one — quality cables in a home garage cycled a few times a week will run twelve to eighteen years — but a real one. Before you buy, ask for the exact cable set part number for the lift you are looking at and confirm the seller stocks it. A good home garage lift maker publishes a cable inspection schedule, usually annual, and sells replacement sets by SKU. Item three: safety-lock geometry and spring kits
The mechanical safety locks are what keep you alive under a lifted vehicle. On a home garage lift they click every couple of inches on the way up — usually two to two and a half inches — and each click is one more chance for the lift to catch itself if a cable or a hose ever failed. Two things to verify on your checklist. One, the locks click confidently at every position, not just at the top; a lift that only locks in a few positions is dangerous and often means a broken spring. Two, the spring and pawl kit is stocked as a replacement part with a documented SKU. A spring costs almost nothing and is the difference between a lift you trust and one you avoid. Buy from a seller who knows the number.
Item four: hose and fitting sizes
The hydraulic hose from the power unit to the cylinder is the second most common wear point after cable. Modern home garage lifts use standard SAE or JIC fittings; older or off-brand lifts sometimes use proprietary fittings that only the maker sells. Before you order, ask the seller if the hose is a standard SAE hydraulic hose you could replace at any parts store in a pinch, or a special-order line only they carry. Standard hoses fail cheap and get replaced in an hour. Proprietary hoses fail expensive and downtime your lift for a week. Item five: differential fluid clearance and drip protection
Our Ankeny caller was buying the lift partly for differential fluid service, and that is a use case where the details matter. Four-post lifts need drip trays to keep old gear oil from staining the concrete — the runway does not catch what drips off the axle. Two-post lifts give you naked access to the diff cover but demand you have room to swing a drain pan under the running gear. Verify that the lift you are buying either includes drip trays or has them as a listed accessory. Verify the ceiling clearance is enough to raise a full-size pickup high enough to work standing up. Verify you have a mopping bucket and a floor squeegee. Gear oil is honest but ugly.
Item six: paint, corrosion, and the barn environment
A machine shed does not run climate control, and Iowa humidity gets into everything. Look at the finish on the lift’s columns and runways. Powder coat is standard and holds up; look for it. Bare steel bolted joints are fine but check that the bolts are zinc-plated or stainless. Ask the seller about touch-up paint availability — a scratch through to bare steel in a barn will bloom rust in a season. This is one of those checklist items that costs nothing to verify and prevents a lot of resentment later.
Item seven: the seller who will still answer the phone in year ten
Every one of the items above assumes you can call someone in year ten and get parts. The last item on the checklist is the seller. Ask them how long they have been selling lifts, whether they still service lifts they sold a decade ago, and whether they stock the wear parts locally.
