When a fleet manager or dealer service director in the Des Moines metro asks us about a rotary truck lift, they usually mean one of three machines: a heavy 2-post rated 15,000 to 20,000 pounds for one-tons and work vans, a 14K-30K drive-on 4-post for pickups and light-medium duty, or a set of mobile columns for shuttle buses and box trucks. What Counts as a Rotary Truck Lift
The phrase rotary truck lift gets used loosely. Some shops mean anything above a 10,000 lb 2-post. Others mean strictly the 30K and 40K mobile column sets used on Class 6 and 7 trucks. In our shop we split it into a clear ladder. Under 12,000 pounds is passenger-car territory and doesn’t belong in a truck conversation. From 12K through 18K on a 2-post handles most one-tons and dually pickups. From 18K through 30K covers work vans, box trucks, and shuttle buses. Anything above 30K starts crossing into medium-duty and heavy-duty commercial trucks, where mobile columns almost always win.
Rotary builds a machine at every one of those tiers, which is why the brand shows up so often when a shop starts pricing. When a buyer contacted us this year about five red Rotary 10K units, we walked them back a tier because the vehicles they described were closer to 14K real-world curb weight once loaded. Choosing the right capacity is the single most consequential call, and we would rather ask the loaded weight up front than swap columns after the concrete is poured.
Two-Post Versus Four-Post for Heavy Trucks
A 2-post gives you full underbody access and takes a smaller footprint, but it demands a healthy slab and demands that the truck fit between the columns. A 4-post drive-on eats more floor space and blocks the wheels, but it lifts absolutely anything you can drive onto the runways within capacity. For a busy service bay that turns brake, exhaust, and drivetrain work, we lean 2-post. For inspection lanes, alignment bays, and shops working long-wheelbase dually pickups and cube vans, we lean 4-post.
A Louisiana buyer reached out to us this year about a gantry rig because his trailer needed roughly 104 to 105 inches between the posts and he did not want to bolt down. Gantries are a real answer for that job, but for a permanent Iowa install we almost always recommend the Rotary SPO20 2-post or a Rotary 4-post 14K instead. The 14,000 lb Drive-On for Municipal and Fleet Shops
A municipal shop east of Ames contacted us about a drive-on 14,000 lb machine for their main bay. They wanted to work on cars and light trucks together, they had a big open floor, and they wanted rolling jacks on top so they could still do wheels-off work. That is the classic case for a Rotary SM14 or SL14 4-post with a pair of rolling jacks. It handles anything the town owns, from a Crown Vic patrol car up to a plow truck at loaded weight.
Municipal jobs run on a fiscal calendar, and that particular install was scheduled to happen after the shop’s December budget closed. We are used to that rhythm. Installing a Rotary Truck Lift in Iowa
Our install crew runs a rotary truck lift job as three pieces: the slab evaluation, the lift set, and the electrical hookup. Slab first. A 12,000 lb 2-post wants a minimum of four inches of 3,000 psi concrete, and heavier machines want six inches at 4,000 psi. If we cannot confirm that from the original construction drawings, we core the slab before we quote a firm number. Any installer who skips that step is guessing, and a guess on a truck lift is expensive.

When Your Existing Lift Jumps, Leaks, or Needs Cylinders
Not every call is for a new machine. A Ford dealership in west-central Iowa reached out about a blue Rotary 12,000 lb 2-post installed only six months earlier that was jumping when going up. In almost every case, jumping on the way up is trapped air in the slave cylinder, a bleed problem, or a check valve seat that needs to be replaced. It is a two-hour service call, not a warranty argument. We diagnose it in person and fix it.
A body shop out west called us about a 9,000 lb Rotary 2-post that was leaking and probably needed a seal kit or full rebuild. Rotary cylinders are rebuildable, but the seal geometry has changed across generations and the wrong kit ruins the day. We keep OEM Rotary seal kits and full replacement cylinders on the shelf. Rollerjacks, Arms, and Options That Matter
On a heavy 4-post, rolling jacks are the option that turns a drive-on into a real service lift. Two air-hydraulic jacks let you pick up the axles for tire, brake, and suspension work without moving the vehicle. On a 12K or 14K drive-on we spec Rotary’s factory jack every time. On a 2-post, the arm choice matters more than the color of the columns. Symmetric arms sit the truck centered between the posts, asymmetric arms cheat the truck forward for door clearance, and telescoping drop-end arms reach frame points on modern one-tons that older arms cannot.
Overhead versus floorplate is the last big call. Overhead gives a clean floor and is our default for new bays. Floorplate is right for low ceilings under about eleven feet, and it is the only option in older Iowa shops with I-beam ceilings ten feet six inches off the deck. Getting a Quote and Lead Times on a Rotary Truck Lift
Rotary heavy-duty lead times move around. In a steady market, a stocked 2-post ships in a week and a 4-post ships in two to three weeks. On a run of new-dealer builds or a factory changeover, either can push out four to six weeks. Mobile column sets on 30K and up are almost always built to order and add several more weeks.
