What’s Actually Leaking: Rod Seal, Piston Seal, or Barrel

A hydraulic cylinder on a lift is a simple machine with three places to fail. The rod seal and wiper at the top of the cylinder keep oil in and dirt out — when that goes, you get external leakage running down the outside of the rod and pooling on the floor or on top of the carriage. The piston seal, down inside the barrel, separates the pressure side from the return side. When that fails you usually get no visible leak at all; instead the lift drifts down under load or won’t reach full height because oil is bypassing internally. The third failure is the barrel itself: scored bore, corrosion pitting from water in the fluid, or an out-of-round section where the piston has been slamming to the stop for fifteen years.

Sorting out which of the three you have determines everything about the repair. External leak with a clean rod and a barrel that measures true? That’s a seal kit and an afternoon. External leak plus a rod with a visible gouge or flaking chrome? The new seal will get cut within a month, so the rod needs polishing or replacing. Internal bypass on an inground cylinder that’s been in a wet Iowa pit since the Reagan administration? That’s usually where a straightforward car lift cylinder repair turns into a replacement conversation, and we’d rather have that conversation before you’ve paid for labor twice.

The Field Diagnosis We Run Before Touching a Wrench

Before we quote anything, we run the lift through a controlled test. Raise it empty to full height, shut the power off, mark the carriage position with tape or a marker on the column, and walk away for fifteen minutes. Then repeat the test with a vehicle on it. Empty drift with no external leak points at the piston seal or a check valve/velocity fuse in the power unit — and plenty of “bad cylinder” calls turn out to be a leaking check valve or a lowering solenoid that isn’t seating, which is a much cheaper day for the customer.

Next we look at where oil actually sits. Oil on top of the cylinder gland is a rod seal. Oil at the base fitting is usually a hose, an O-ring, or a cracked port — not the cylinder. Oil on the inside of a two-post column with no obvious source is often a pinhole in a hydraulic line rubbing against the carriage. We also pull a fluid sample: milky fluid means water intrusion and tells us the bore is probably pitted, which changes the odds on a successful car lift cylinder repair considerably. On four-post lifts we check whether the drift is actually the cylinder or a stretched cable letting one corner settle. Ten minutes of this diagnosis saves a lot of money, and we do it on every service call rather than guessing from the parking lot.

Reseal Jobs We Do Confidently

The best-case scenario is a cylinder with a clean, straight, well-chromed rod and a bore that still mics within spec. On those, a reseal is a real repair, not a band-aid. We depressurize the system, drain and cap the lines, unpin the cylinder, and get it to a bench where we can keep the internals clean — resealing a cylinder while it’s hanging in a column with grit falling into the open gland is how you get a callback. The gland comes off, old rod seal, wiper, backup ring, and piston seals come out, everything gets cleaned and inspected, and new seals from a brand-correct kit go in with the right lubricant and no nicked lips.

The parts side matters more than people expect. Generic seals in the right nominal size will often seal for a while and then take a set, especially on higher-pressure two-post cylinders. When Repair Stops Making Sense

There’s a point where we tell customers to stop spending money on the old cylinder. Deep longitudinal scoring in the bore is the clearest one — you can hone light glazing, but you cannot hone away a groove deep enough to catch a fingernail without going oversize on the bore and losing the piston fit. Corrosion pitting from water-contaminated fluid is the same story. A bent rod, a rod with chrome peeling in sheets, a cracked weld at the base clevis, or a mount ear that’s been re-welded twice already all land in the replace column.

Cost math matters too. On a common two-post cylinder, a replacement unit often lands close enough to the combined cost of a seal kit, machine work, freight, and shop labor that replacement is the smarter buy — you get new everything and a warranty instead of a rebuilt part with unknown bore life. On inground and heavy-duty cylinders the numbers flip hard the other way, because the replacement cost and the excavation or teardown labor are both significant, so a careful rebuild is usually the right call. Safety Rules We Don’t Bend on Cylinder Work

A lift cylinder holds thousands of pounds in the air on trapped fluid, and that fluid is at pressures that will inject through skin. Nobody on our crew opens a cylinder, cracks a fitting, or pulls a pin until the lift is fully lowered or mechanically supported, the power unit is locked out, and the pressure is relieved. On two-post lifts we set the mechanical locks and add stands under the runways or arms. On four-post lifts we drop onto the locks and block the runways. The vehicle comes off the lift first — always. We’ve been called in to clean up after someone tried a quick seal swap with a car still up, and there is no version of that story worth telling twice.

The other rule is post-repair verification. After any car lift cylinder repair, the lift gets bled, cycled, inspected for leaks at full extension, load-tested to a realistic vehicle weight, and drift-tested again. Locks get checked for engagement at every position. If the lift is in a commercial shop, we document the work so it lines up with the annual ALI inspection record. Fluid, Contamination, and Why Cylinders Fail Early

Most premature cylinder failures we see in Iowa shops trace back to fluid. Unheated garages and shops that get washed down pull moisture into the reservoir through the breather, and water in hydraulic oil rusts bores from the inside out over a winter or two. Cheap or wrong-viscosity fluid is the next culprit — a lift spec’d for AW-32 running on ATF or a heavy hydraulic oil will run hotter, swell or harden seals depending on the chemistry, and shorten seal life dramatically. The maintenance that actually prevents a car lift cylinder repair is unglamorous. Wipe the exposed rod down when you clean the bay so grit doesn’t get dragged past the wiper. Keep the reservoir at the correct level with the specified fluid, and change it on the manufacturer’s interval instead of topping off forever. Don’t power the lift into the top stop repeatedly — that pounds the piston and the gland. Keep road salt and pressure-washer spray off the rods. On four-post units, keep cables adjusted so one corner isn’t loading the cylinder off-axis.
