The single most important line on any 2 post car lift spec sheet is the ALI Gold certification statement. That certification proves the machine passed structural, hydraulic, and safety-lock testing at an independent lab against the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard. For a municipal fleet, ALI Gold is what your risk manager needs to see when an insurer or state inspector asks about equipment compliance. Column and Overhead Cutoff Bar Design
A modern 2 post car lift has two structural columns tied together by a top rail carrying the equalizer cables and the overhead cutoff bar. That padded bar swings down and shuts off the raise circuit the moment a vehicle roof touches it. On the fleet’s older lift, the cutoff bar had been physically wired shut by a previous tech because it kept nuisance-tripping. That was the exact defect that killed it for us. We showed his crew how the new bar’s micro-switch is adjustable, how it should be tested weekly with a hand press, and why bypassing it voids both the warranty and the ALI certification. The columns themselves are single-piece rolled steel, not welded segments, which changes how they react in a rare over-capacity event.
Arm Locks and Restraints
The four arms on a 2 post car lift each carry a spring-loaded gear-tooth restraint that engages the second a load lifts off the ground. That lock keeps the arm from swinging out from under the vehicle when a tech leans on a fender or bumps a tire. On the fleet’s old lift, three of the four arm restraints were seized. Concrete and Anchor Verification
A 2 post car lift transfers its entire working load into two column baseplates, and every bit of that load ends up in the concrete. For a 10,000 lb model, we require a minimum 4 inches of 3,000 psi concrete measured at the anchor points, and we prefer 4.5 to 5 inches for fleet installs where the lift cycles daily. The city building had an existing 6-inch pour from 1998, which was more than enough once we cored one test hole and confirmed the mix. Anchor torque gets checked at install, at 30 days, and at every annual inspection thereafter. If a 2 post car lift shifts under load because an anchor pulled, the whole safety argument collapses. This is not optional maintenance.
Hydraulic Load Holding and Cable Equalization
Two independent safety systems keep a raised vehicle from dropping on a 2 post car lift. The hydraulic system holds pressure through a velocity fuse and check valves, so a burst hose does not drop the load. Separately, the mechanical safety locks click into notches on each column at fixed intervals, and the equalizer cables keep both columns rising and falling together. The fleet manager wanted to know what happens if a cable snaps. Answer: the loaded column stops rising, the other column keeps going for maybe half an inch, and the built-in cable slack sensor trips the raise circuit off. Daily and Monthly Inspection Rhythm
We built the fleet crew a laminated daily checklist that lives on the column of the 2 post car lift. Before first use each morning: visual on cables, arm restraint rock test, overhead bar function test, quick oil level glance at the power unit. Monthly: grease all arm pivots and slider blocks, check anchor torque with a torque wrench, run the lift through full cycle unloaded and listen for uneven column motion. The final piece is people. A safe 2 post car lift is only as safe as the tech spotting the vehicle on it.
