Myth 2: EVs Are Too Heavy for Normal Lifts

The concern that EVs will overload a shop lift is partially true, and mostly overstated. A Tesla Model 3 weighs somewhere around 4,000 pounds. A Rivian R1T weighs closer to 7,000 pounds. A F-150 Lightning tops 6,500. A 10,000 lb two-post handles every one of those with margin. Where the math gets tight is at the heavy-duty commercial end – a Class 3 or Class 4 electric truck can push past 12,000 pounds fast, and the giant electric SUVs land in the 7,000 to 8,500 range on their own. Rivian marks them. Ford and GM publish them for their electrified pickups. The problem is techs who spot the arm by feel on ICE vehicles and then do the same by feel on a Model Y. Print the diagrams and post them in the bay. Retrain when a new EV model appears. Lifting an EV correctly is not harder than lifting a Camry – it just demands the diagram, every time.

Myth 4: You Need Three-Phase Power for a Modern Lift

Many EV shop owners assume that because their charging infrastructure needs three-phase, their auto lift does too. Not true for most shop lifts. The majority of two-post lifts we install run on 208-230V single-phase powerpacks, and even higher-capacity commercial units often offer a single-phase option. Three-phase is required for some heavier commercial and inground lifts, and it can be a slight efficiency gain on high-cycle units, but it is not a requirement for a general EV shop. What matters is the amperage of the circuit and its proximity to the lift.
