A car restoration shop owner in southwest Iowa called us last spring wanting auto lifts installed in a converted pole barn — two lifts, tight budget, and questions about freight, unloading, and whether he needed to rent a forklift for delivery day. That call turned into a decision tree we now walk every restoration customer through. Restoration work needs a different lift than mechanical service

Mechanical service is fast in-and-out — lift, wrench, drop. Restoration is slow. A car might sit on the lift for weeks while body panels come off, frame gets media-blasted in place, welding happens overhead. That changes what you buy. Restoration shops usually want at least one 4-post because you can leave a vehicle up on runways for extended stretches without loading the frame at pinch points. They also want a 2-post for the times you need wheels-free access to the underside — suspension out, exhaust off, floorpan work. So a lot of restoration shops end up with both auto lifts installed, in different bays. The other consideration is ceiling. Restoration involves overhead work — welding on the underside of a floor, hammer-and-dolly on rocker panels — and you want enough clearance above the vehicle when it is up. We usually recommend at least 12 to 14 feet of ceiling to the lowest obstruction if the shop plans to work under a lifted car for hours. That rules out some low-clearance pole barns unless you are willing to trench or lower the pad.

The budget-to-configuration decision tree

We walk restoration customers down a simple tree. Question one: what is the maximum vehicle weight you will lift? Passenger cars and classic trucks stay under 7,000 pounds; 3/4-ton and full-size classics push into 9K to 10K; heavy stuff (military vehicles, tow trucks, RVs) is 12K and up. Question two: how long does a typical restoration sit? If the answer is “weeks to months,” 4-post first. If it is “days,” 2-post is fine. Question three: do you do alignments in-house? If yes, alignment-configured 4-post with slip plates and turnplates. If no, save money on a straight storage 4-post. Question four: budget. A single 4-post storage lift installed can run into the low four figures for entry gear or well into five figures for commercial-grade with alignment features. Question five: electrical? Single-phase 220V works for most; three-phase is faster to lift and quieter. If you are getting auto lifts installed on a tight budget, sequence: 4-post first, 2-post when the shop can support the second bay.

Auto lifts installed: freight, unloading, and what your driveway can handle

Every 2-post or 4-post lift ships on a pallet or in a wooden crate by freight carrier. A 2-post typically arrives on one long pallet — the columns, arms, cross-tube, and hydraulics — running 900 to 1,400 pounds depending on capacity. A 4-post is heavier, often 1,600 to 2,400 pounds. The delivery truck is a full-size semi, usually with a liftgate but not always. Where restoration shops in rural southwest Iowa get tripped up is the driveway. If your shop is at the end of a quarter-mile gravel lane, coordinate a smaller freight carrier or plan to shuttle the pallet from the road. When we schedule auto lifts installed by our crew, we usually take delivery at our warehouse first and roll the lift in on our own truck — it saves the customer the coordination headache. If you are buying and installing yourself, ask the freight carrier for a liftgate service and confirm the delivery vehicle can turn around in your yard. Damaged deliveries because the driver rushed a turn are the single most common freight problem we see.

Do you need a forklift on install day? Usually not.

Shops often assume they need a forklift on site to install a lift. Usually they do not. Our crew unloads with a hand pallet jack, an engine hoist, or two techs and a moving dolly, depending on the piece. The heaviest single component on most 2-posts is the crossbar or the powerpack; on a 4-post it is the runways. Two people with the right leverage handle both. Where a forklift or a small skid steer helps is on a 4-post install with extended-length runways, or on the biggest heavy-duty 2-posts (15K and up). If you have a forklift already, great — we will use it. If you do not, do not rent one just for install day. Where we do recommend rented equipment is on the anchor drilling side — a rotary hammer drill that is actually up to the concrete. A homeowner-grade hammer drill will take an hour per anchor hole and burn out the tool. A proper rotary hammer with a 3/4-inch masonry bit turns each hole in a minute or two. That single upgrade is the difference between a one-day install and a three-day install.

Concrete, ceiling, and the layout mistakes we see in shop conversions

The most common shop conversion is a pole barn built for storage that now has to hold auto lifts installed on the concrete pad. Three things bite people. First, ceiling clearance to the truss. Pole barns sometimes have trusses hanging into the working envelope; you need clearance for the lift’s top rails, the vehicle, and the technician working above it. Second, concrete condition. Older pads may not meet the 4-inch, 3,000 PSI minimum, or they may have expansion joints running through the anchor pattern. Third, layout — bays that are wide enough for one vehicle become tight when you add columns, arms, and a walkable perimeter. We recommend a bay width of at least 12 feet per 2-post lift and 14 feet if you want comfortable working room around it. Column-to-column spacing on a 2-post is roughly 11 feet; on an asymmetric arm layout, plan for arms swinging outward when loading. Sketch the bay on paper with actual lift dimensions before committing to placement.

Metal work and welding: clearances and grounding considerations

Restoration involves welding, sometimes on the vehicle while it is up on the lift. That raises two considerations most buyers do not think about. First, spark and slag containment: welding under a lifted vehicle drops hot slag onto everything below, including the lift’s hydraulic hoses and cables. Position the welder so slag falls onto clean concrete, not onto the equalization cable running along the runway. Second, grounding: a welder needs a clean ground path back to the workpiece, not through the lift’s hydraulic or electrical system. We have seen shops damage powerpack electronics by grounding a welder to the lift column instead of the vehicle. Always clamp directly to the vehicle. On restoration jobs that involve heavy metal work — floorpan replacement, frame section-in, quarter panel swaps — a 4-post with drive-on runways is easier because the vehicle sits on its wheels and the workpiece is more stable than a frame-hung 2-post. Once you have auto lifts installed correctly in a restoration shop, both platforms coexist fine as long as operators respect the grounding and slag rules.

What restoration shops in southwest Iowa buy most often

The pattern we see across Council Bluffs, Atlantic, Red Oak, Creston, and shop conversions in between: one 9,000-pound 4-post for long-hold projects, and one 10,000 or 12,000-pound 2-post for wheels-free work. That covers 95% of restoration jobs. Brands most often installed in that setup are Rotary or Challenger commercial for the 2-post — both have real US parts pipelines and warranty backing — and either a storage-grade 4-post or a BendPak/Atlas home-shop 4-post for the storage bay, depending on budget.
