Restoration shop lift selection is a different problem than picking equipment for a general repair bay, and we learn that again every time we walk into a build shop somewhere in Iowa. A production shop wants a car up and down forty times a day. A restoration shop wants a 1967 Camaro body sitting three feet in the air for eleven months while somebody blocks quarter panels, and then wants the frame on a rotisserie in the next stall, and then wants a finished car parked on something that will not put a dimple in a fresh floor pan. Why Restoration Work Breaks the Normal Rules
Every lift spec sheet is written for a service shop. Cycle counts, rise time, throughput, drive-thru clearance for a tech doing twelve oil changes before lunch. None of that describes what happens in a restoration bay. Your car may go up once and stay up for a season. The vehicle may not have doors. It may not have a drivetrain, a hood, a windshield, or any glass at all. Half the weight you planned for is sitting on a shelf in boxes, which sounds like an advantage until you realize an empty body shell balances nothing like a complete car and a lift set to grab factory pinch welds now has nothing solid to grab.
That is the core of restoration shop lift selection: you are buying access and patience, not speed. You need to get underneath a partially disassembled vehicle safely, keep it there for weeks, and still be able to move it out of the way when the next project rolls in the door. We had a two-man shop north of Des Moines that bought a fast asymmetric two-post because that is what their buddy’s repair shop ran. Within a year they had a bare ’55 Chevy body they could not safely hold, a project car occupying their only bay indefinitely, and no way to store the finished truck they had just delivered. They ended up adding two four-posts and using the two-post for teardown only. That is usually the right answer — it just costs more when you get there in two purchases instead of one.
Four-Post Lifts: The Restoration Workhorse
If we could only put one lift in a restoration shop, it would be a four-post. The car sits on its own tires on runways, so nothing is clamped to sheet metal, nothing is loading a rocker panel that may or may not have rust hiding under the seam sealer, and nothing needs to be re-adjusted as parts come off. You drive on, raise, and walk away. For long-term parking of a rolling chassis or a finished car, a four-post with a set of rolling jack trays gives you wheels-free capability when you need it and a stable parking platform when you do not.
Runway length matters more here than in a service shop. A lot of restoration projects are longer than modern cars — full-size 1970s sedans, long-bed pickups, panel trucks. We spec extended runways and open-front models regularly for exactly this reason, because nothing is more annoying than a lift that fits the car by two inches with no room to open a door or set a fender on a stand. Capacity is the second question. Most restoration cars are lighter than the crossovers a shop lift is designed for, so a nine or ten thousand pound four-post is plenty for cars, and we push toward twelve to fourteen thousand when trucks are in the mix. Ceiling height decides the rest. In a lot of Iowa shop buildings with fourteen-foot walls you can stack two cars comfortably; under a ten-foot ceiling you are picking between a low-profile storage lift and no lift at all.
When a Two-Post Still Earns Its Spot
Two-posts are not wrong for restoration — they are just wrong as the only lift. There is no better tool for the tear-down and blast-and-paint phase of the underside, because a clearfloor two-post gives you a totally unobstructed floor and lets you stand under the car with a wire wheel or a spray gun without runways in the way. For frame and floor pan work, that access is worth the trade.
The catch is attachment points. A stripped body shell often has compromised pinch welds, and the whole reason the car is in your shop may be that the rockers are gone. We tell shops to plan on frame cradle adapters, truck adapters, and stackable pad extensions from day one, and to build a habit of setting arms on structural frame or subframe points rather than trusting whatever is left of a factory lift pad. Symmetric two-posts are usually the better restoration choice over asymmetric, because you are lifting old body-on-frame vehicles with different weight distribution than the front-heavy front-drive cars asymmetric arms were designed around. Rotary and Challenger both build symmetric configurations we install often, and both hold up in a shop where the lift may sit loaded for a month at a time. Concrete, Ceiling, and the Stuff Nobody Budgets For
The single most common reason a restoration shop lift selection goes sideways in Iowa is the slab. Older shop buildings, converted barns, and machine sheds frequently have four inches of unreinforced concrete over questionable base, sometimes with control joints exactly where your anchor bolts want to go. A two-post needs real concrete under it — typically four to six inches of properly cured, adequate-strength slab depending on the model — and if you do not have it, the fix is cutting and pouring footing pads. That is not a disaster, but it is a line item and a week of downtime.
Four-posts are more forgiving because the load spreads across four base plates and many models do not require anchoring for the same reasons a two-post does, which is one more reason we lean that direction for restoration work in older buildings. Ceiling height is the other constraint people discover too late. Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak — trusses, lights, sprinkler heads, the garage door track and opener. Then add the car. A ’58 Cadillac on a lift needs more headroom than the spec sheet’s generic sedan. Long-Term Loaded: Storage Behavior Matters
Here is the detail that separates restoration shop lift selection from everything else we spec. A restoration lift spends most of its life holding weight, not cycling. That changes what matters mechanically. You want mechanical locks you trust, a lock system you can actually hear engaging across the full travel, and a hydraulic system that is not the only thing keeping the car in the air. Any decent lift is designed to sit on its locks rather than on hydraulic pressure — but in practice, a shop that leaves a car up for six weeks will notice a slow settle from a weeping cylinder seal or a cracked hose fitting long before a busy service shop does.
So we tell restoration customers two things. First, always lower onto the locks and confirm engagement on all posts or corners, every single time, without exception. Second, plan on inspecting cables, sheaves, and slack-cable safeties on a real schedule even though your cycle count is tiny, because time and humidity do damage that use does not. Iowa shops swing from humid summers to dry, cold winters, and unheated buildings sweat. Surface rust on cables and equalizer sheaves is the thing we find most often on low-cycle lifts. Building a Two- or Three-Lift Restoration Shop
Most of the restoration shops we work with land on the same layout eventually, so we may as well tell you what it looks like up front. One or two four-posts for long-term project storage and finished-car parking, ideally with rolling jacks so you get wheels-free service without giving up the storage function. Then a mid-rise scissor or a pair of portable low-rise units for body work, because most sheet metal and paint prep happens between knee and chest height, not overhead.
If the budget only allows one lift right now, buy the four-post and rent or borrow overhead access for the teardown phase. That order costs you less than starting with a two-post and discovering you have no storage. If the budget allows two, buy the four-post and a mid-rise before you buy a second overhead lift.
