Automotive Storage Lift Cost Breakdown: Lift, Freight, Install, Add-Ons

When a quick-lube franchise operator in Ankeny called us about adding an automotive storage lift to his overflow bay, the conversation went sideways fast. He had been quoted symmetric versus asymmetric arms and priced 2-post lifts, and no one had told him a storage lift is a completely different animal. We are Auto Lift Services in Ames, Iowa, and we sell, install, and stock parts for four-post storage lifts across the state. Here is the honest cost breakdown we walked him through, from lift purchase through concrete and freight, without the padding you will see elsewhere.

What the automotive storage lift itself actually costs before anything else

The lift-only price on an automotive storage lift is where every quote should start, and it is the number most shops fixate on. Entry-tier four-post storage lifts land in the low four-figure range. Atlas is the go-to import brand here, and their 8,000- and 9,000-lb models are what we ship most for personal garages and light service bays. Mid-tier is where a quick-lube operator or serious hobbyist should probably shop. Add a couple thousand and you are into a beefier Atlas Apex or an equivalent BendPak with thicker steel columns, better-rated cables, and a longer manufacturer warranty. Top tier, full BendPak or Rotary commercial, runs higher again and is usually overkill unless the lift is running six days a week under paid mechanics. We list our current in-stock automotive storage lift range on the store page and update it monthly. Skip the cheapest-option impulse. The price gap between entry and mid-tier is smaller than the labor cost of one hydraulic seal replacement three years in.

Freight to Ankeny: pallet class and residential versus commercial matter

An automotive storage lift crates at roughly 1,200 to 1,800 pounds on a 90-inch pallet, which puts it in a specific LTL freight class and pricing tier. From our warehouse to Ankeny, we are typically quoting freight in the low three-figure range if the delivery site is commercial with a dock or a forklift on hand. Residential delivery, meaning your driveway, home garage, or a shop without lift-off equipment, adds a lift-gate service charge, which typically doubles the freight number. Curb-drop is standard. The freight driver is not wheeling a pallet into your bay. Have a forklift, skid steer with forks, or a friend with a tractor loader ready when the truck arrives. We coordinate the delivery window and give you the carrier tracking number the day it leaves. For nearby Iowa cities like Ankeny, Des Moines, Ames, and Boone we can also deliver on our own truck when we are headed that direction, which sometimes saves the freight line item entirely. Just call and ask.

Site prep is where the surprise line items hide

Concrete slab is the biggest one. An automotive storage lift needs 4 inches of properly cured concrete at minimum with 3,000 psi rating and no cracks running under the column footprints. If you are pouring new or reinforcing existing, that is a separate contractor line item and can easily match or exceed the lift price on a fresh bay. Most existing quick-lube slabs are already rated fine because they were poured for vehicle load, but check with the original builder or pull the permit. Electrical is the next surprise. Storage lifts run on 220-volt single-phase from a dedicated 20-amp circuit, and if the nearest 220 outlet is on the other side of the shop, an electrician run adds low-to-mid three figures depending on distance. Some owners already have a welder outlet within reach and it costs nothing. Anchor-bolt clearance from expansion joints in the slab is the third check. Column footprints cannot sit within a few inches of an expansion joint or slab edge without engineering review. We will walk your slab layout on a phone call if you send photos.

The symmetric-versus-asymmetric question does not apply to a storage lift

Here is the confusion the Ankeny operator had. Symmetric and asymmetric refer to arm geometry on a 2-post lift. Asymmetric rotates the columns 30 degrees so the door swings clear of the column when the car is up. It is a spec question that matters a lot on 2-posts. A storage lift is a four-post drive-on design with no arms. The vehicle sits on the runways and the runways carry the load through the columns. There is nothing symmetric or asymmetric to pick. What you do choose on an automotive storage lift is runway spread (40 to 44 inches typical), overall length (short or long-wheelbase runways), and column height (standard or tall for double-stacking). If you are stuck comparing quotes and one salesman is throwing symmetric-asymmetric language at you for a four-post, he is either confused himself or hoping you are. Push back and ask what he actually means. For a proper 2-post arm discussion see our lift buying guide. For storage, ignore that whole conversation.

Add-ons that actually pay off for differential fluid work

Differential fluid service on a four-post is faster than any 2-post workflow. The car sits on the runways, differentials hang free between the runways, and you can slide a drain pan and pump straight underneath. The add-on that pays off fastest for that work is a jack tray plus a rolling bridge jack, so you can unweight one axle to pull a plug or check for movement. Drip trays are the second obvious one. You will thank yourself the first time a rear diff pukes gear oil during a fluid change. Aluminum drive-over ramps are worth the upgrade over steel bar-tread if you are pushing a transmission jack across the runways multiple times a day. LED-strip column lights are cheap and let you actually see the underside of the vehicle in a windowless bay. Skip: air-line kits (fine to add later), casters (only if you will move the lift, which most fixed-bay shops do not). Our automotive storage lift add-on menu is on every product page and we quote them at MAP.

Install labor: our crew versus your own guys

An automotive storage lift install runs about six labor-hours for a two-person crew. That is mount the columns, run the cables, hook up the hydraulic power unit, first cycle the lift, and check every safety lock. Our install crew charges a flat fee that varies by distance from Ames. For Ankeny we are an hour out and it is a partial-day job. If your own maintenance guys are handy and comfortable with hydraulics and anchor bolts, DIY install saves the labor line, and the manual is thorough. What we tell shops that DIY: you are on the hook for the first-cycle safety check, the anchor-bolt torque, and any manufacturer warranty questions if something goes wrong in year two. If we install, we own that. It is a real trade-off. For a bay in daily commercial use, we recommend pro install. For a hobby garage or overflow bay used a few times a week, DIY is fine if you follow the manual. Call 800-674-9302 for a delivered-and-installed all-in quote.

The bottom-line all-in cost for a mid-tier setup in central Iowa

Adding everything up for a typical Ankeny shop overflow bay: mid-tier automotive storage lift, freight to a commercial address, professional install by our crew, one rolling bridge jack, and drive-over aluminum ramps lands in a range that our sales team will quote live on the phone. We do not publish exact dollars because pricing shifts monthly with vendor cost. Rough shape of the total: the lift is the big line, install is the next-largest, freight is third, add-ons come after. Site prep, concrete and electrical, is separate and depends on your bay. If you are comparing our quote against a big-box no-install price, add roughly the mid-three figures for freight, another mid-three for pro install, and the concrete-and-electrical estimate from your own contractor. Nine times out of ten our all-in beats the sum of the piecemeal parts because we roll freight and install together. For more on install pricing see our 4-post lift installation article.
