Before the Crate Arrives: Measure Twice, Order Once

Unloading the Freight Without Wrecking Anything
Freight day is where most homeowners underestimate the job. A mid-size four-post ships as a bundle of runways, four posts, cross rails, ramps, and a hardware box, and the whole thing can run north of 1,500 pounds. Semi drivers deliver curbside. They are not obligated to help you get it into the garage, and most won’t. If you don’t have a forklift, telehandler, or a friend with a skid steer, arrange a liftgate delivery and plan to break the pallet down piece by piece with an engine hoist, pallet jack, or four strong people and a lot of patience.
Before you cut a single strap, inventory the shipment against the packing list. Bent runway edges, a crushed carton, or a missing hardware bag are all far easier to resolve on delivery day than three weeks later when you’re mid-assembly on a Saturday. Photograph any damage before you sign. We tell every customer the same thing: note it on the bill of lading even if you think it’s cosmetic. Then lay the parts out in the order you’ll need them — posts and cross rails first, runways second, ramps and accessories last. A clean staging plan turns a two-day fight into a half-day assembly, and it keeps you from stacking a 400-pound runway on top of the hardware you need next.
Setting the Posts and Squaring the Frame
Assembly starts with the cross rails and posts, not the runways. Stand the posts loosely, bolt the cross rails to their tops per the manual, and leave every fastener finger-tight until the whole frame is square. This is the step where people get in trouble — they torque everything down as they go, then discover the frame is a parallelogram and the runways won’t drop in. Measure diagonally corner to corner. When both diagonals match within about an eighth of an inch, you’re square. Only then start snugging hardware in the sequence the manufacturer specifies.
Post plumb matters just as much. Shim under the base plates with the steel shims that came in the box — never wood, never washers stacked like coins. Iowa garage slabs almost always have a pitch toward the door for drainage, so expect to shim the front posts. Use a two-foot level on two faces of each post and get them vertical, because a post leaning even a degree or two will make the carriage bind and chew a slider block prematurely. On commercial four-post alignment racks, we anchor the posts and check level across the runways with a laser or a long precision level, since alignment work demands the runways be coplanar. For a home storage unit, level runways still matter — a car parked on a twisted rack loads the cables unevenly.
Routing the Cables and Hydraulic Lines
The cables are the part of any 4 post lift installation guide worth reading twice. A four-post typically uses four equalizer cables running over sheaves at the top and bottom of the posts, and every one of them has to be routed exactly as the diagram shows — no crossed runs, no sheave skipped, no cable rubbing a frame edge. Take the time to trace each cable end to end with a flashlight before you tension anything. We’ve been called to lifts that ran for a month with a cable riding the edge of a sheave flange, and by the time we got there the outer strands were already broken.

Wire the power unit per the plate — most single-phase 220V units want a dedicated circuit, and we’d rather you pull a licensed electrician in than improvise on an extension cord.
Leveling, Locks, and the First Test Cycle
Once the lift runs, the equalizer cables get adjusted so all four corners rise together and the locks engage simultaneously. Run the carriage up to a lock position and look at each latch. If three drop in and one hangs, that corner’s cable needs tension. Adjust in small increments — a quarter turn on the nut moves more than you’d expect — and recheck at multiple heights, not just one. The locks are the entire safety system on this equipment; the hydraulics only lift, they don’t hold.
Then test it empty, top to bottom, three or four full cycles. Listen for scraping, watch each sheave turn, and confirm the lift stops cleanly at every lock step. After that, load it with a lighter vehicle and repeat. Raise a foot, stop, walk around it, raise another foot. We do this on every commercial install, and it’s the single habit that catches the problem before it becomes an incident.
