Mobile mechanics who use automotive two post lifts as their home base tend to run their equipment hard, and the first thing that fails is almost always a cylinder seal. We got a call last spring from a mobile technician working out of a West Des Moines shop who’d noticed his passenger-side column drifting down about half an inch over ten minutes – never a good sign the day before he had three CV axle jobs scheduled. This is the case study of that afternoon, and what we ended up teaching him about cylinder seals and rebuild kits on his lift.

The symptom – drift, and what it actually means
The tech described it perfectly on the phone. Lift a small SUV to working height, walk away for coffee, come back and the vehicle is visibly lower on one side. On automotive two post lifts, drift is almost always a hydraulic problem, and it’s almost always the cylinder seal on the drifting column – not the pump, not the hoses, not the equalization cables. The reason is that most two-post designs use a single power cylinder in one column that lifts that side directly and pulls the other side up through the cables. When the power side drifts, oil is bypassing the piston seal internally. When the non-powered side drifts, either a cable has stretched or a lock isn’t seating. This tech had drift on the power side, which pointed us straight at a piston seal and rod seal replacement. Diagnosis over the phone took about four minutes.
Why CV axle work exposes cylinder problems fast
The tech’s schedule mattered here because CV axle and half-shaft replacement is one of the jobs that punishes a leaky cylinder worst. You’re lifting the vehicle, then loading the suspension repeatedly as you pry the shaft out of the knuckle, then hanging on the axle to guide the splines into the diff. Every load and unload cycles the cylinder past its seals, and any seal weakness gets worse with each pump. A cylinder that drifts half an inch in ten minutes at rest will drop an inch during a hard axle job. On automotive two post lifts that means the arms shift, the pads move, and if the vehicle isn’t perfectly centered you can pull the pad out from under the pinch weld. This is how vehicles get dropped, and it’s why we tell everyone with a busy CV or brake schedule to address drift the same week they notice it.
What’s actually in a cylinder rebuild kit
A standard two-post cylinder rebuild kit for a 10,000 lb Rotary or Challenger contains the piston seal, the rod wiper, the rod seal, the internal O-rings on the piston nut, and a fresh backup washer. Some kits include the bleeder and the fill port O-ring. It does not include a new cylinder body or a new rod. If the rod itself is pitted, scored, or bent, no seal kit in the world will hold pressure – you need a full cylinder replacement, which costs several times more than a seal kit but is still cheaper than a new column set. On this particular job, we pulled the cylinder, inspected the rod under a light, found a small pitting spot right where the wiper rides, honed it smooth, and installed the rebuild kit. The one-afternoon rebuild timeline
Here’s how the West Des Moines job actually ran. We arrived around one in the afternoon with a Rotary-compatible seal kit and a case of hydraulic fluid. Lowered the lift, disconnected the hydraulic hose at the cylinder, capped the line, pulled the pin at the top of the cylinder rod, removed the cylinder from the column, and had it on the workbench by one-thirty. Disassembly with a spanner and light tapping took about twenty minutes. Cleaning the piston, honing the small pitting spot, and reinstalling seals took another forty. Refill, bleed, cycle test, and re-check for drift by four in the afternoon. He was ready for the next morning’s CV job. What we look for during the inspection while we’re there
We never leave a lift after a cylinder rebuild without a full walk-around, because if the cylinder was leaking, other things have been aging too. Cables get inspected end-to-end for broken strands, especially at the sheaves where they wrap the pulleys. Locks get manually engaged and disengaged on both columns to confirm they seat evenly. Arm restraints get checked – the little spring-loaded pins that keep the arms from swinging under load, which are the single most-often broken safety component on any two-post. Concrete anchors get torque-checked. On this West Des Moines lift we found one lock that wasn’t fully engaging on the non-powered side, adjusted the cable tension, and re-tested. Total additional time about twenty minutes. That kind of pass-through catches problems before they turn into second callouts on automotive two post lifts.
Preventive maintenance we set him up with
The best cylinder rebuild is the one you don’t need to do. We left him with a short preventive routine: check hydraulic fluid level monthly (a low reservoir sucks air, which accelerates seal wear), wipe the rod down after any job with brake fluid or degreaser splash, cycle the lift to full height once a week to keep the rod moving through the seals (idle rods pit worse than working ones), and get anchor torque checked once a year. He was already doing tire rotations, oil changes, and CV work every week, so the lift was cycling plenty. What he wasn’t doing was checking fluid, and the reservoir was noticeably low – probably three cycles of leaking past the piston that he’d missed. Cheap habit, big payoff.
What this looks like as a service call
