Diagnose the leak first — five common failure points
Not every hydraulic seep is a cylinder rod seal. Before you spend money, verify the source. The five common leak points on a two-post are: cylinder rod seal, cylinder base seal, hydraulic hose fitting at the power unit, hose fitting at the cylinder, and the equalizer line where it crosses between columns. Rod seals show a wet ring around the rod when the lift is at full extension. Base seals show a puddle under the column. Hose leaks show at the fittings. The equalizer line usually drips at the cheek plate at the top of the column. Diagnose accurately before ordering parts because a seal kit will not fix a hose leak and vice versa. Photograph the leak point at full extension and send it to us if you are not sure — we can usually identify the source from a good photo.
When a seal kit is the right call
A cylinder rebuild kit — new rod seal, wiper seal, and base O-rings — runs a modest parts cost per cylinder, and rebuild labor is a few hours if the cylinder does not need honing. For a 15-year-old lift with an otherwise sound structure, working locks, straight columns, and no cable fatigue, rebuild is the right call. The lift has years of life left in it. Where rebuild becomes the wrong call is when the cylinder rod itself is pitted or scored — the new seals will fail on the pitted surface within months. Inspect the rod carefully during teardown. If it looks like sandpaper or has visible scoring lines you can catch a fingernail on, replace the cylinder rather than reseal it. Full cylinder replacement is a bigger parts number but is still a fraction of buying new automotive two post lifts.
When to walk away from the old lift and buy new
Some conditions push you toward replacement. Bent or dented columns from a past impact. Cable fatigue that has been ignored for years. Cracked welds at the base plate. Locking latches that skip rungs or fail to seat. A power unit that has been rewound multiple times. Any of these individually might be repairable, but two or more together push the economics toward replacement. A new pair of automotive two post lifts installed is a low-to-mid five-figure investment; a full restoration of a badly worn lift can approach half that in parts and labor and leaves you with a structure that is still fifteen years old. Do the honest math before you commit either direction.
Pre-purchase checklist: capacity, height, arm config
If you decide to buy new, the checklist has three columns: capacity, height, and arm configuration. Farm shops typically lift full-size pickups, farm trucks, and occasional passenger cars for family. A 10,000-lb lift covers most of that mix, but if you regularly lift a three-quarter-ton or one-ton pickup with a full fuel tank and a hitch weight from a trailer, step up to 12,000 lb. Ceiling clearance drives the overhead-versus-baseplate call, which we cover in a separate overhead vs baseplate article. Arm configuration — asymmetric versus symmetric — depends on your vehicle mix. Asymmetric is friendlier for pickups. Symmetric is friendlier for cars. Pick against your actual customer profile, not against a spec-sheet ideal.

Concrete condition audit before you buy
Farm shops often have older concrete — sometimes a 1970s slab poured over a compacted gravel base with no rebar. Before you buy automotive two post lifts, core-sample the intended column locations to confirm 4.25 inches of 3,000 psi minimum. If the slab is thinner or spalled, plan for a pier pour at each column footprint before install. This is the single most common surprise cost we see on rural install quotes — the owner budgets for the lift and freight, then finds out on our walkthrough that the concrete needs work.
