Every week somebody calls us from a shop bay with a tape measure in one hand and a phone in the other, asking the same question: overhead vs baseplate two post lifts — which one belongs in this building? We install both across Iowa, from single-bay farm shops outside Nevada to eight-bay dealership service drives in Des Moines, and the honest answer is that the building usually decides before your preferences do. Ceiling height, floor slab thickness, garage door tracks, air lines, radiant tube heaters, and whether you plan to roll a transmission jack under the car all push the decision one direction. Here is how we walk through it on the phone and on-site, plus what we have learned pulling old columns out of Iowa concrete.

What actually separates the two designs
Mechanically, both styles do the same job: two columns, two carriages, four arms under the pinch welds, and a hydraulic cylinder doing the lifting. The difference is where the equalization cables and hydraulic hose run. An overhead unit routes them through a beam bridging the tops of the columns, which is also where the shutoff bar lives that stops a tall vehicle from being driven into the ceiling. A baseplate unit routes everything through a low channel across the floor between the columns, leaving the airspace above the vehicle completely open.
That single routing decision cascades into everything else. Overhead units put the crossbar at roughly 11 to 12 feet on a standard 10,000 lb model, so your ceiling needs real room. Baseplate units need only enough height for the columns themselves plus the vehicle you are raising, which is why they end up in older Iowa buildings with 10-foot ceilings, sloped roofs, or a garage door that opens straight into where a crossbar would go. When people ask us about overhead vs baseplate two post lifts, this is where the conversation starts, and it usually ends within a minute or two once they tell us their ceiling number.
Ceiling height: the measurement most people get wrong
Measure to the lowest obstruction, not the peak. We have had customers report a 12-foot ceiling and then we arrive to find a garage door track, a fluorescent fixture, a hanging unit heater, or a bar joist web hanging down to 10 feet 8 inches. On an overhead configuration that crossbar is a fixed structure, and you cannot shave a foot off it. If you have a clear 12 feet with nothing in the way, overhead is on the table. If you are between 10 and 11 feet 6 inches, we are almost certainly steering you toward baseplate.
Radiant tube heat is a specific Iowa problem worth calling out. A lot of shops in this state run tube heaters along the walls and across the center of the bay, and they sit exactly where an overhead crossbar wants to go. Moving a heater is possible but it means a gas fitter, a permit conversation, and downtime. We would rather sell you a baseplate unit that installs in one day than an overhead unit that turns into a three-trade remodel. Floor space and how you work under the car
The baseplate channel is low — usually a couple of inches — but it is there, and it runs right across the middle of your work zone. If you roll a transmission jack, an oil drain, a wheel dolly, or a floor jack under vehicles constantly, that lip becomes a daily annoyance. Techs step over it, casters catch on it, and drain pans want to tip. Some installers pour a small ramp of grout over it, which helps but is not the same as a flat slab.
Overhead units give you a completely clean floor between the columns, and for a transmission shop, driveline work, or exhaust fabrication that matters more than almost anything else. We put in an overhead unit last year for a driveline shop in central Iowa specifically because they were tired of fighting the channel with a two-post transmission jack. On the other hand, a general repair shop doing brakes, tires, and oil changes may never notice the baseplate lip at all. Be honest about the work you actually do most days, not the work you do twice a year.
Vehicle height, trucks, and the shutoff bar
Baseplate has one clear advantage beyond ceiling clearance: nothing overhead to hit. Lift a dually with a topper, a service van, a box truck cab, or a lifted 3/4-ton and there is no crossbar limiting how high you can go. Shops that work on tall vehicles — ag service, fleet, upfitters — often choose baseplate for exactly that reason even when they have the ceiling for overhead.
Overhead units include a shutoff bar that trips before the roof of a tall vehicle contacts the beam. That is a real safety feature, but it also means the tallest vehicle you can raise is limited by the crossbar height minus vehicle height. On a standard 10,000 lb overhead unit, a full-size van or tall truck may only come up a few feet before the roof gets close. That is still plenty for wheel and brake work, but it is not comfortable standing room. Concrete: what Iowa slabs will and will not hold
Both styles need real concrete. The typical requirement is 4 to 6 inches of 3,000 PSI minimum, reinforced, cured, and not sitting on top of a control joint or a patched trench. We core-test when there is any doubt, and we have found 3-inch slabs poured over gravel in buildings that look solid from the outside. If the slab does not pass, the fix is a cut-and-pour footing pad at each column, and that cost is the same regardless of which design you pick.
One nuance: a baseplate unit distributes some load through the floor channel, but do not read that as needing less concrete under the columns. The anchor bolts still carry the overturning moment. Overhead units transfer part of the load between columns through the beam, which some people assume reduces anchor demand. In practice both designs live or die on the same thing — clean anchor holes in sound concrete at the correct torque. We check anchor torque on every service call, and loose anchors are the single most common issue we find on lifts installed by whoever was cheapest.
Cost, install time, and long-term service
Pricing between the two designs is close enough that it rarely decides anything. Baseplate models tend to land slightly lower in the entry tier because there is less steel in the beam, but once you get into higher-capacity commercial units the gap narrows or reverses. Install labor is similar, though overhead assemblies take a bit longer because the beam has to be lifted and squared before anchoring. Neither one should be a multi-day job in a normal bay with good concrete.
Service life is where we would nudge people toward overhead if the building allows it. Cables and hoses running up high stay out of the path of dropped tools, floor sweepers, and standing water. Baseplate cables live in a channel that collects brake dust, road salt, and whatever leaks out of the last vehicle, and salt is not a small factor in Iowa. We replace more baseplate equalization cables than overhead ones, and it is almost always corrosion rather than wear. If you go baseplate, blow the channel out a few times a year and it will treat you fine.
