Two configurations: a two-post 12K vs. an asymmetric 10K
Small fleets running pickups and vans on the Iowa-Missouri border almost always compare the same two car lift automotive configurations. Configuration A is a 12,000 lb symmetric two-post with tall columns — the workhorse for fleet trucks and F-250-class vehicles. Configuration B is an asymmetric 10,000 lb two-post — cheaper, more common, better for door clearance on lighter fleet vans and half-tons. The 12K wins if you carry any three-quarter-ton or one-ton trucks. The 10K wins if your entire fleet is half-ton and lighter and you need door swing space. Both configurations do suspension and shock work well. Only capacity and door-swing decide between them. We quote whichever matches your fleet; we do not upsell a 12K to a shop running half-tons only.
Suspension and shock replacement — which lift handles it better
Suspension and shock replacement on a small-fleet pickup requires wheel-off access to the strut towers and to the lower control arms. Both a symmetric 12K and an asymmetric 10K support this work, but the ergonomic difference is real. The 12K symmetric lifts the vehicle by four points equidistant from the columns, which centers the strut towers roughly between the columns and makes overhead access cleaner. The 10K asymmetric skews the vehicle 30 degrees toward the tech side, which is great for opening driver’s door mid-service but slightly worse for reaching the passenger-side strut tower without walking around. If suspension is your dominant fleet service, we lean symmetric. If door swing matters more (say, drivers dropping off vehicles and grabbing paperwork), we lean asymmetric.
Site survey step 1: measure the bay
Every car lift automotive install on the border starts with a physical bay measurement. We measure four things: floor-to-lowest-ceiling-obstruction, wall-to-wall bay width, front-to-back bay depth, and door opening dimensions. Fleet shops are often converted farm buildings or metal-frame commercial buildings, and the ceiling structure varies wildly. A pole-barn conversion with 14-foot peak but 10-foot beam at the lift zone gives you 10 feet of clearance, not 14. A truss-frame commercial building with cross-bracing at 11 feet gives you 11 feet minus the bracing. We shoot the low points with a laser and record them. A 12K tall-column two-post needs 13 feet clear at peak lift; a standard-column 10K asymmetric needs 12 feet. Anything less and we spec a lower-column model.
Site survey step 2: verify power for a car lift automotive install
Border-country fleet shops sometimes run single-phase service, sometimes three-phase. Verifying power is step two of any car lift automotive site survey. Most 10K and 12K two-post lifts we sell come in either voltage; you spec at order time. Single-phase 220V is the most common we see in small border shops. Three-phase is faster to raise and cleaner running, but the shop needs an upgraded panel. If your building has three-phase, use it. If it has only single-phase, we spec the single-phase power unit. Do not swap after install; the hydraulic power unit is not field-convertible. We also verify the dedicated circuit is 30A or 40A depending on lift model. A power unit sharing a circuit with anything else trips breakers under load.
Site survey step 3: slab and drainage
Small-fleet shops on the border often have older slabs — 1970s and 1980s pours, occasionally poured to spec, occasionally poured light. We core or drill-probe every slab where documentation is missing. Minimum for a 10K two-post is 4.25 inches of 3,000 psi. Minimum for a 12K is 4.5 inches. Drainage matters because border-country shops often have sloped floors toward a center drain, and lift columns need to be plumb regardless of floor slope. We shim the base plates to level. Also worth checking: floor sealer. A shop that has been used for years with penetrating floor sealer will have a slight surface treatment that does not affect anchor performance but does affect the visual finish. Do not sand or grind the sealer off; it is doing nothing bad.

Carriers rate our corridor as an outlying delivery, which triggers a rural surcharge and, if the driver has to leave the interstate for more than 15 miles, a fuel adjustment. We negotiate freight for every order and pass the rate through — no markup on our end. If your shop is within 20 miles of I-35 or US-63, freight is close to a metro rate. If you are further off the interstate on a county road, expect a small additional charge.
