The failure modes on a lift cable are surprisingly visible if you know what to look for. If you find two or more within a foot of length, the manufacturer’s replacement threshold has likely been crossed. Corrosion is the second signal, showing up as rust bloom on the outer strands or a chalky residue where the cable contacts a sheave. Diameter reduction is a slower failure — a cable that’s stretched under years of loading can lose a small fraction of its original diameter, and a caliper measurement tells you if you’re outside spec. Kinking, crushing, or heat damage are less common on a hydraulic lift automotive four-post but worth checking anyway. We re-applied a light coat of cable-specific lubricant to all four cables, checked cable tension, and adjusted one runway that had drifted about a quarter-inch out of level over the six months of duty cycles. That’s within tolerance and completely normal. The whole visit took under ninety minutes and gave him a clear record for the annual inspection later.
