A western Illinois quick-lube franchise operator called us because he’d started a personal restoration project in a spare bay behind his main shop, and the metal work — floor pan patches, rocker panel replacements, undercarriage cleanup — was eating his weekends. The main quick-lube business runs three bays with full-rise two-post lifts doing oil changes all day. Behind the building he built a fourth bay for his own use — an old GM pickup he’s restoring, plus occasional metal work for friends. Restoration is fundamentally different from production work: the vehicle stays up for hours or days at a stretch, the tech spends most of his time under the car doing patient work with a MIG welder or grinder, and cycle-time doesn’t matter at all. What does matter is comfortable standing access, stable long-hold height, and a lift that can spend an entire month at rise without complaint. For his use case — solo, non-commercial, one truck at a time, occasional metal work — we recommended a professional-tier ALI-Certified 9,000-pound mid rise scissor lift. He didn’t need heavy-duty commercial cycling since he’s the only user, but he did want the ALI Certified sticker because he’s storing a valuable classic on the lift for long periods and wanted the safety-cam design that gets independently audited. That lift’s ticket price landed in the low five figures. He could have gone with an entry-tier import for meaningfully less, but the long-hold and safety-cam considerations tipped him toward certified. On a restoration-bay build, we usually push toward certified for exactly this reason: the car is going to sit at height for a long time.
Freight and Site Prep
Freight from the manufacturer to western Illinois ran roughly a couple hundred dollars — good rate, standard LTL. Site prep was slightly more involved than the shop’s other bays because the restoration bay had older concrete he wasn’t sure about. We asked him to send photos and take a couple of core measurements. The concrete was five inches with no visible cracks — technically under the manufacturer’s spec of six for a scissor of this rating, but with a smaller vehicle and lower usage frequency we told him it would be fine. We flagged it in his file so if he ever sells the shop, the next owner knows. Site prep line item: hairline.
Install and Electrical
Install for a single mid rise scissor lift when we’re mobilizing a crew for one job is priced individually — meaningfully more than doing two at once. He was flexible on scheduling, so we grouped his install with two other Illinois installs on the same route that week and passed the savings back. That’s worth asking about any time you’re buying a single lift: what else does the installer have going in your area, and can we group. Electrical was straightforward: he had an existing 220V single-phase circuit in the bay from an old welder, and we tied into it after his electrician verified the amperage rating. Electrical line item was small.
Brand History: Why We Pointed Him to a Proven Design
Restoration means the lift has to still be working ten or fifteen years from now, well past the project’s completion, because the operator will use it for the next restoration too. Brand history matters more here than in almost any other context. On an unsupported import brand where parts aren’t stocked, the same modest maintenance can become impossible instead of routine, and the lift becomes an ornament. That’s the parts-pipeline argument in one paragraph, and it’s why brand matters more than the initial price tag.
Total Spend Versus the Jack-Stand Approach
Add lift, freight, install, electrical, and expected lifetime parts. Compare against the alternative he’d been living with — jack stands, creepers, sore back, half the productivity per hour. On a restoration that will run several years of weekends, the lift pays back well inside the first year in raw shop hours saved, even ignoring that the finished restoration will be worth substantially more than the lift itself.
