That single difference changes almost every buying decision. Duty cycle matters less; long-term load holding matters enormously. Bay real estate matters more, because a car parked on a lift for five months is occupying floor space you cannot recover. And the vehicle itself is often not a vehicle at all — it may be a body shell with no drivetrain, no suspension, and no pinch welds worth trusting.

The reasoning is simple: a car drives on or gets rolled on with a set of ramps, sits on its own tires or on cribbing, and stays there safely for as long as you need. Nothing is clamped to a rocker panel. Nothing depends on a pinch weld that is about to be replaced. And the runways give you a stable platform to set jack trays, rolling bridge jacks, or a transmission jack without dancing around lift arms.
Capacity is where shops sometimes under-buy. A bare shell weighs very little, but the same shop that restores a Nova also gets asked to work on a three-quarter-ton pickup or a mid-century truck with a heavy cast-iron drivetrain. Anyone who has spent a full day block-sanding a quarter panel or leading in a seam knows that the right working height is not floor level and it is not eight feet — it is about waist to chest height, adjustable, with nothing under the car you have to bend around. A mid-rise puts a car exactly there.
Portable scissor units are especially useful because you can roll them out of the way when a bay needs to become open floor for a paint booth staging area or a chassis table. Frame-engaging mid-rise models are the ones we recommend for restoration, since surface-mount and portable versions keep your concrete free for other uses. The tradeoff is that a mid-rise blocks the center underside of the car, so it is a bodywork and wheel-service tool, not a floor-pan tool. Plan for it as a third piece of equipment rather than a substitute for the four-post or the two-post. Concrete, Ceiling Height, and the Iowa Building Reality
