A vehicle collector in western Illinois bought a portable automotive scissor lift from us in the spring, and by the time his first-year service call came around, he had learned a lot about what a scissor does well and what it doesn’t. He agreed to let us write up the story — anonymized — because his experience is the most useful thing a first-time buyer can read. Here is the first-year of ownership, from install day through his 12-month check-in.

Install Day — What He Wishes He’d Known
The collector had his portable automotive scissor lift delivered on a Tuesday and planned to spend Wednesday assembling it. What he did not plan for was that the crate is heavy, the deck sections are awkward, and a two-person assembly turns into a two-day job if you try to do it alone. He called a friend Wednesday morning, and they finished by dinner.
Lesson one from his install day: always have a second person committed for the whole assembly, not just “available if I need help.” The pieces come out of the crate in an order that makes sense to the manufacturer and less sense to the first-time buyer. Two people can hold and align while the third piece bolts in.
Lesson two: fluid bleed takes longer than the manual says. Plan for a full first-day fluid cycle where the lift goes up and down empty a dozen times to purge air. Do not put a vehicle on it until the cycle feels smooth.
Arm Restraints — Wait, Do Scissors Have Those?
Two-post lifts have arm restraints. A portable automotive scissor lift does not have swing arms — the deck itself contacts the vehicle at four or six points along the frame or the tires, depending on the deck design. So the arm-restraint question doesn’t apply the way it does on a two-post.
What matters instead is the deck’s contact-point design. Some portable scissor decks use tire-in-place runways (the truck drives on and stays on its wheels). Others use frame contact points (the deck lifts the frame directly, wheels hanging free). The collector’s unit was the runway type, so his contact concern was tire chocking, not frame restraint.
We coached him on chocking practice: chock both tires on the deck once the vehicle is spotted, set the parking brake, and only then start raising the lift. If the vehicle needs wheels-free service (brake rotors, hub work), a portable is the wrong tool — for that, you want a two-post. He knew that going in.
The First Real Job — An Oil Change That Went Long
Six weeks after install, the collector did his first real job on the lift: an oil change on his 1968 restoration. The car had never been on a lift before. He spotted it carefully, chocked the tires, raised to eye-level, and lowered onto the safety cams. The oil change itself took twenty minutes. Getting comfortable with the lift took two hours.
What he wrote us afterward: the safety cam engagement is loud. First-time users are startled by the mechanical clunk when the lift settles onto the cams. That is the sound of the lift becoming safe to work under, but it does not feel that way at first. It takes several cycles before the tech (or in his case, the owner) stops flinching.
He also learned that oil-drain access on his particular car required lifting a few inches higher than he originally guessed. On a portable automotive scissor lift, that is a 30-second re-raise. On a floor jack, it is a whole re-set.
Safety-Cam Engagement — How to Read the Feel
Every portable automotive scissor lift we sell has a mechanical safety cam that clicks into fixed positions as the lift rises. The collector’s unit clicks in every 2.5 inches. What took him a while to internalize is that the operator has to actively lower the lift onto the cams — the cams do not carry weight until you release the hydraulic pressure and settle the load down.
The feel: raise past the desired height by about an inch, then release the down valve just until the deck settles onto the nearest cam. You hear the click, and you feel the lift transfer weight from hydraulic pressure to mechanical stop. That transfer is the point where the lift becomes safe to work under.
If you don’t hear the click and feel the transfer, you are not on the cams — you are still on hydraulic pressure. Do not go under the vehicle until you hear it and feel it.
Storage and Rolling Between Sessions
The collector’s garage is a heated four-stall with a workshop attached. His portable automotive scissor lift lives in the corner of the shop side when not in use, and rolls into the working stall when he has a project up. In year one, he rolled it about a dozen times.
Rolling gets easier with practice. The first time, he wrestled it. By the fourth or fifth time, it was a 5-minute one-person job. His trick: position the tow handle low, walk backwards, and let the casters do the work rather than pushing from the deck edge.
Storage-wise, he keeps the lift covered with the canvas we shipped and rests the deck at the lowest position with the cams fully disengaged. That relieves stress on the cylinders during long storage periods and keeps the seals happy.
Twelve-Month Maintenance — What the Check Found
His first-year maintenance call came in on schedule. The check itself is straightforward: hydraulic fluid level, seal condition, hose fitting torque, cam pivot lubrication, caster wheel free-play, and a full cycle test with a load and without. On his portable automotive scissor lift, everything came back clean. One hose fitting needed a quarter-turn of torque and one caster wheel got a shot of grease. Total on-site time: about an hour.
We do these checks by phone-and-photo for out-of-region customers or in-person for anyone within about a 4-hour drive of Ames. The collector was in the drive radius, so we came out. His only real question at the 12-month mark was about when to replace the hydraulic fluid — the answer was another 12 months.
He is on the schedule for a second-year check next spring.
What Year Two Looks Like
The collector plans to add a couple more oil changes, a set of brake pads (with the tires on — pad-only work does not need wheels-free access), and a driveline u-joint replacement in year two. All jobs his portable scissor handles without complaint.
