A runway scissor lift raises the vehicle on two solid runways that support the tires, with the wheels loaded on the runway surface. Both are full-rise commercial designs. The pad configuration looks and functions much like a two-post lift once elevated — a tech walks between the wheels and works on the frame, suspension, and driveline unobstructed. The runway looks like a small four-post drive-on, with the vehicle sitting on its tires the whole time. That difference in how the vehicle rests on the lift is the entire game for exhaust and driveline work.
Pad platforms for driveline access
For driveline access — u-joints, driveshaft removal, transfer case service, transmission crossmember work — a scissor lift for automotive service with pad platforms wins clearly. The tech has full access under the vehicle from side to side because the runways are not in the way. The driveshaft can come out in one piece without the tech dodging a runway. The transmission crossmember is accessible without repositioning. Pad platform lifts are also the right pick for suspension work and control-arm swaps, which pair naturally with exhaust and driveline jobs. The trade-off is that the vehicle must be lifted at its factory lift points, which requires the tech to know the vehicle. Modern vehicles have documented lift points; older cars and light trucks sometimes do not. That is a workflow consideration, not a dealbreaker.
Runways for exhaust work
Runway scissor lifts for automotive service have a real advantage for exhaust work in one specific way — the vehicle sits at its ride height, tires loaded, so the exhaust hangers rest naturally. That means the exhaust sits where it will sit in service, which makes shop-fitting a new exhaust system easier. On a pad-platform lift, the wheels hang and the suspension is at full droop, which changes where the exhaust hangers pull. For a shop that fabricates custom exhaust, this matters a lot. For a shop that just replaces cat-back systems on production vehicles, it matters less because the fit is already engineered. The tradeoff is that the runways sit between the tech and the underside of the vehicle, which means exhaust routing around the runways is a workflow you have to learn.
Ceiling height and door swing considerations
Both configurations of scissor lift for automotive shop use raise the vehicle to about the same full-rise height — around 68 inches on most commercial models. That means ceiling height requirements are similar. Where they differ is bay footprint. Pad-platform scissors have a slightly wider foot because the pads sit outboard of the vehicle centerline. Runway scissors have a longer footprint because the runways run the length of the wheelbase. In a western Illinois shop with a typical 20 foot deep bay and 12 foot ceiling, either configuration fits. In a shorter bay, the pad platform gives you back some length. In a narrower bay, the runway may fit tighter. Door swing on service doors is not usually a factor for either scissor because neither has vertical columns like a two-post.
Duty cycle and service life

Service life is comparable. The wear items — hydraulic hoses, cylinder seals, lock solenoids, sync cables — appear on both. What differs is the deck plate replacement cost if a plate gets damaged. Runway plates are typically larger and cost more to replace than pad platforms. Pad-platform pads take more direct point-load abuse and can dent or deform if they are used incorrectly. Cost and installation
Runway scissor lifts for automotive service typically cost a bit more than the pad-platform equivalent from the same manufacturer, mainly because the runway assembly is a larger fabricated piece. Installation labor is similar because both use the same anchor pattern and the same power unit hookup. Delivery of a runway is bulkier and the crate is longer, which sometimes matters for a tight shop entry. In dollar terms, the runway premium is usually a low four-figure number over an equivalent pad lift. Whether that premium is worth it for a specific shop depends on the exhaust work mix. A shop that fabricates a lot of custom exhaust will get value from the runway. A shop that does more driveline and suspension will not.
