A Waukee family shop’s generational question

Our customer’s shop has been in Waukee since the 1970s, and the current owner is the third generation running the bays. The two-post lifts in the shop are the second generation’s choices — bought roughly twenty-five years ago, still running, still cycled daily. But parts for those specific models are increasingly hard to source, the cables are due for another replacement, and the honest conversation between father and son was whether to keep patching the existing units or to plan a full replacement over the next couple of years on the shop’s own schedule.

The generational framing changes the buying decision. A first-time buyer optimizes for price and immediate capability. A third-generation buyer optimizes for the parts pipeline in the year 2050. Brands come and go, distribution networks reshape, and a lift bought today has to be serviceable in twenty-five years or the whole plan fails on the family shop’s balance sheet. That is the framing we brought to the deep-dive when we sat down at their kitchen table.

A brief history of the design

The 2 post car lift design has been fundamentally stable since the 1960s, when the two-column overhead-crossbeam architecture stabilized across the industry. Prior designs used single-column or in-ground configurations that had capacity and access limits. The two-column design gave a shop unobstructed under-vehicle access from wheels-off through mid-body work, and it scaled cleanly from a passenger-car 9,000 lb up through a heavy-duty 30,000 lb configuration for medium trucks and above. It has proven to be one of the most durable shop-equipment designs in the trade.

The design has evolved in details — safety-cam engagement went from single-position to multi-position, arm restraints went from friction-only to positive gear engagement, and hydraulic power units went from noisy to relatively quiet. But the core geometry that made the 1970s lifts work is the same geometry that makes today’s lifts work. A shop buying a well-built lift today is buying a design that has been proven across more than fifty years of real-world use in exactly the kind of shop our customer runs.

Rotary versus Challenger: real dimensions

The two brands that dominate a third-generation shop’s shortlist for a commercial 2 post car lift are Rotary and Challenger. Rotary’s 10,000 lb symmetric overhead unit runs a column spread of roughly 132 inches drive-through, a lifting height of 78 inches at the pad, and an overhead-beam clearance of about 145 inches at the crossbeam. Challenger’s comparable unit is a couple inches different in each dimension — column spread slightly narrower, lifting height slightly higher, overhead clearance nearly identical to the Rotary specification.

Both brands offer symmetric and asymmetric configurations, ALI Gold certification on current models, and drop-end truck adapters as optional add-ons. For a family shop doing mixed work — passenger cars for daily service and full-size pickups for the local farm accounts — either brand handles the workload capably. The tiebreaker for our Waukee customer was parts pipeline history, not current-year dimensions or feature list. Both brands are solid choices for a shop planning across generations.

Parts pipeline for a thirty-year shop

Rotary has been building lifts continuously for decades and maintains a parts catalog for units still in service from the 1970s. Challenger, part of the same parent organization, has similar parts continuity for its own line. Both brands run a distributor network that keeps common wear parts — cables, seals, lock dogs, arm restraints — available same-day or next-day for units in current production, and we keep a healthy inventory of the most common failure parts on our own shelf in Ames.

For a third-generation shop, the practical question is whether a lift bought in year one will be serviceable in year twenty-five without hunting through auction sites for out-of-production parts. On the two brands we recommended, the answer is yes for any current-production model. On lower-tier brands we did not shortlist, the parts pipeline history is shorter and less certain going forward. That is not a criticism — it is a factual observation about which brands have thirty-year parts continuity, and for a generational shop that history matters more than sticker price.

Restoration work and real dimensions

The restoration and metal-work side of our Waukee customer’s shop drove some specific dimensional requirements for their next 2 post car lift. Restoration frequently involves wide vintage vehicles — full-size domestic sedans from the 1960s and 1970s — with tracks up to seventy-two inches and lengths over two hundred and twenty inches. That means arm reach has to accommodate a wider hard-point spread than a modern vehicle, and drive-through width has to allow a wide vehicle to enter the bay cleanly without scraping a rocker on a column edge.

We specified the wider drive-through option — an additional four inches over the base column spread — and drop-end swing arms rated for the wider hard-point pattern. The overhead crossbeam clearance also matters for restoration: pulling a body off a frame requires additional headroom above a mid-lift position, and their thirteen-foot ceiling gave us margin for a standard overhead lift with room to work under a raised body without the crossbeam becoming a problem for tall project vehicles.

Column spread, drive-through, and reach specifics

For a technical audience, the specific dimensions we specified for the Waukee shop’s new 2 post car lift were: column-to-column spread of 136 inches drive-through, front arm reach from 27 inches to 51 inches with drop-end extensions to 43 inches, rear arm reach identical, lifting height of 74 inches at the pad, overhead crossbeam clearance of 148 inches, and total lift width outside-column to outside-column of approximately 155 inches. Those numbers accommodate every vehicle the shop currently services and every restoration project on the schedule for the next few years.

Slab requirements at those dimensions are a minimum of four and a half inches of 3,000 psi concrete, with 3/4-inch epoxy anchors set to five and a half inches of embedment for long-term hold. Electrical is a dedicated 220V single-phase 30-amp circuit for the power unit run to a wall receptacle behind the driver-side column. Ceiling clearance requirement is 148 inches minimum at the crossbeam. Those are the numbers a builder or an electrician can act on directly without further translation.

Building a program that outlives the founders

The larger conversation with a third-generation shop is about building a lift program, not just buying a lift. That means standardizing on one or two brands so the parts inventory stays manageable, keeping a signed commissioning report on file for every lift in the shop, running annual ALI inspections without fail, and training the next-generation techs on the pre-shift walk-around from day one. Those habits are what turn twenty-five-year lifts into forty-year lifts and what keep a family shop’s equipment budget predictable across generations of ownership.
