And most buyers don’t ask the right questions about them at the quote stage. Foremen who’ve spent decades under lifts want to hear that the restraints engage automatically as soon as the arms take load, that the safety cams engage every foot of travel, and that release is a deliberate two-step (not a single accidental bump). That’s the pattern on Rotary, Challenger, Forward, and BendPak commercial lifts. If a quote you’re holding doesn’t describe those two mechanisms in specific terms, ask. The salesperson should be able to walk you through both without hesitation.
How mechanical safety cams engage
Mechanical safety cams are the redundancy that makes a two-post lift genuinely safe. Hydraulic systems hold pressure well, but seals fail, hoses burst, and gauges get old. If your only support was hydraulic, a seal blow-out would drop the vehicle. Safety cams add a mechanical, positive-engagement toothed rack running the length of each column. As the lift rises, the cam clicks past each tooth. If hydraulic pressure disappears, the cam catches on the nearest tooth — usually within an inch of travel — and holds indefinitely.
The audible click of a good safety cam engaging on the way up is one of the sounds every experienced tech knows. If you don’t hear it on your autolift garage, that’s a red flag. Either the cam is jammed, the spring is weak, or the engagement geometry is off. All fixable. But you have to notice. Arm restraint mechanisms explained
Arm restraints are the small spring-loaded pins that engage the arm gears as soon as weight lands on the pads. Their job is to prevent the arm from swinging out from under the vehicle mid-lift — which would happen if the arms could rotate freely. On a properly engaged restraint, the arm is locked to the column’s gear teeth and can’t rotate at all under load. To move the arm, you have to lift the pin (releasing the spring engagement) and manually swing.
Different manufacturers use slightly different geometries. Rotary uses a spring-and-gear system that engages positively at every tooth position. Challenger uses a similar mechanism with a marginally different pin geometry. Both work well when installed and adjusted. What you don’t want: any autolift garage where the arm restraint is a friction pad, a manual lever, or a cheap-plastic engagement. Those exist on entry-level imports. They fail. Insist on gear-based, spring-loaded, automatic engagement on any lift you buy.
Why cheap arm restraints slip
Cheap arm restraints slip because the spring pressure is undersized, the gear teeth are shallow, or the engagement geometry lets the pin ride up under load and disengage. All three failure modes exist. We’ve seen them on low-cost imported lifts. On a proper autolift garage arm restraint, the pin fully seats between two gear teeth and the spring holds it there against any rotational moment the arm can generate under load. There’s no realistic path for the pin to lift under normal operation.
The way to check: on any lift you’re considering, ask the seller to demonstrate arm restraint under load. Lift a real vehicle to working height, then try to rotate the arm manually. It shouldn’t move. If it moves — if there’s any perceptible swing — the restraint isn’t engaged correctly, and you have a lift that can fail. Safety cam release mechanics: twist-to-park vs push-button
Getting the lift up is one thing. Setting it down safely is another. Safety cam release is where the two-step design earns its keep. On a Rotary or Challenger autolift garage, releasing the safety cams requires a deliberate action — usually rotating a lever on each column, or a coordinated hydraulic pressure release followed by a mechanical cam disengagement. It’s not a single button. That’s on purpose.
Single-button release designs (which exist on some entry-level lifts) let the operator disengage safety cams too easily — including accidentally. A deliberate two-step release means the tech has to intentionally choose to disengage the mechanical safety before the lift can come down. That’s the correct engineering choice for a shop environment where distractions happen. When you’re evaluating an autolift garage for daily maintenance duty, ask about the cam release procedure. If the answer is “push this button,” think twice. If the answer is “rotate this lever after hydraulic pressure equalizes,” that’s the right pattern.
Daily maintenance checks that catch problems early
Every technician working under an autolift garage should be doing a five-second pre-lift check every single time. Look at the pads (any oil or debris?). Cycle the arms and confirm restraint engagement. Listen for the safety cam click on ascent. Verify hydraulic pressure holds at working height. If any of these are off, don’t work under the vehicle until the lift is checked out.
Daily checks catch most problems before they become failures. Weekly checks add cable visual, sheave inspection, and hydraulic hose inspection. Monthly adds a torque check on column base anchors — Iowa temperature swings can loosen anchors over time. Quarterly is a full inspection with the ALI-certified installer if you have one on contract. Skip the daily and weekly checks and problems compound. Buyer’s checklist for a shop-ready autolift garage
Here’s the checklist we hand foremen when they’re comparing quotes. One: ALI Gold certification — is it on the specific model, not just the manufacturer? Two: automatic gear-based arm restraints — spring-loaded, engaging under load? Three: mechanical safety cams — how often per foot of travel, how does the tech hear engagement? Four: two-step safety cam release — deliberate, not accidental? Five: swing arm capacity and reach — matched to your typical ticket mix? Six: overhead versus baseplate — appropriate to your bay ceiling?
Seven: warranty and parts availability — do you have local install and service support? Eight: install crew certification — is the installer ALI-certified themselves? Nine: startup documentation — will you get the signed packet the insurance carrier will ask for? Ten: first-year inspection — is it included and when does it happen?
