A written lift cable inspection schedule is the cheapest insurance a shop can buy, and it’s the one maintenance item we see skipped more than any other. Why a Written Schedule Beats Good Intentions

Every shop owner we talk to already knows cables wear out. That’s not the gap. The gap is that cable wear happens so slowly that there is never a specific day when it becomes urgent, so it never gets prioritized over the car sitting on the lift right now. A broken strand doesn’t set off an alarm. A stretched equalizer cable doesn’t stop the lift from working — it just quietly stops keeping the two carriages in sync, and one day a technician notices the driver side is riding higher than the passenger side and assumes the floor is uneven.

A written lift cable inspection schedule solves this by turning a judgment call into a checkbox. It doesn’t have to be complicated. A laminated card zip-tied to the column, a line item on the same monthly sheet you use for air compressor drains, or a recurring reminder on the service manager’s calendar all work fine. What matters is that the inspection has a date attached and a name attached, so the responsibility doesn’t dissolve into everybody-and-nobody. We’ve had shops in central Iowa go from replacing cables reactively — after a failure, with the lift down and cars stacking up — to replacing them proactively during a slow week, all because somebody wrote a schedule on a whiteboard and never erased it.

The Daily Walk-Around: Thirty Seconds Before the First Car

The daily portion of a good schedule takes less time than filling out a repair order. Before the first vehicle goes up, the technician who owns that bay should look at the visible cable runs and the lift’s overall behavior. On a 2-post, that means glancing at the equalizer cables where they run over the sheaves at the top or bottom of the columns. On a 4-post, it means checking the four cable runs at the corners and confirming all four runways sit level with each other with no load on them.

What you’re feeling for is change, not perfection. Did the lift come up smoother or rougher than yesterday? Is one carriage lagging? Is there a new clicking or popping sound as the arms rise? Did a runway settle overnight when it didn’t used to? Any of those is a reason to slow down and look closer. We also tell technicians to watch the safety locks, because locks that no longer engage evenly on both sides are frequently a cable problem in disguise, not a lock problem. The daily check is deliberately shallow — it exists to catch fast-moving failures between the deeper inspections, and it’s the part of a lift cable inspection schedule that costs a shop essentially nothing to adopt.

The Monthly Hands-On Cable Inspection

Once a month, the lift comes down empty and somebody actually touches the cables. Wear a glove — that’s not optional, because the first sign of a failing cable is usually a broken strand sticking out like a needle, and a bare hand finds it the hard way. Run your gloved hand slowly along every accessible foot of cable and feel for burrs, flat spots, kinks, birdcaging where the strands have separated and swelled, and any section where the lay of the wire looks stretched out compared to the rest.

Then look at the ends and the pulleys, because that’s where most cables die. Check the fittings and thimbles for cracks, elongated holes, or corrosion. Check that every sheave still spins freely by hand — a seized sheave grinds a cable in half faster than any amount of normal cycling. Look at the pulley grooves for wear ridges that indicate misalignment. On a 4-post, verify the runways are still level with a tape measure from the floor at all four corners rather than trusting your eye. Record what you find, even when everything looks fine, because a log that shows six clean months followed by one note about a rough spot tells you far more than a single inspection ever will. This monthly step is the backbone of the whole lift cable inspection schedule.

Annual Professional Inspection and ALI Certification

Once a year, the lift should be inspected by somebody who isn’t the person using it every day. ANSI/ALI ALOIM — the standard governing lift operation, inspection, and maintenance — calls for an annual inspection by a qualified lift inspector, and cables are a major part of that inspection. This isn’t bureaucratic box-checking. An outside inspector brings a comparison set: they’ve seen a hundred lifts of your model and know what a cable at 70 percent of its life looks like versus one at 20 percent.

An annual inspection also covers the things a monthly walkthrough legitimately can’t. Anchor bolt torque, column plumb, arm restraint function, hydraulic condition, and lock engagement all interact with cable life — a column that’s out of plumb by a small amount will chew through equalizer cables on a predictable and expensive cycle. Adjusting Intervals for How Hard Your Lift Works

The intervals above are a baseline, and baselines assume average conditions. A 4-post storage lift in a heated garage that goes up twice a year and holds a classic car is not on the same wear curve as a 2-post in a high-volume tire shop that cycles thirty times a day. Cable wear tracks cycles and contamination far more than calendar time, so the schedule should flex.

We push shops toward more frequent hands-on checks — every two weeks instead of monthly — when any of these apply: the lift runs more than roughly twenty cycles a day, the bay sees road salt and slush dragged in all winter, the lift lives outdoors or in an unheated building, the equipment is more than ten years old, or the cables have never been documented as replaced. Iowa winters deserve specific mention here. Chloride-laden brine works its way into stranded cable and corrodes it from the inside, where your gloved hand can’t feel it, and a cable that looks acceptable in March can be badly compromised underneath. Conversely, a home-garage owner with a lightly used 4-post can reasonably stretch the hands-on inspection to quarterly, as long as the annual professional look still happens. A good lift cable inspection schedule reflects your actual duty cycle, not a generic template.

Red Flags That Mean Stop Using the Lift Today

Some findings are judgment calls. These are not. Tag the lift out of service and call us if you find broken or protruding wire strands anywhere in the run, birdcaging or visible strand separation, a flattened or kinked section, corrosion or rust that has pitted the wire rather than just discolored it, a cracked or deformed end fitting, or a cable that has stretched so far the adjustment is bottomed out with nothing left to take up.

Same answer for behavioral symptoms: carriages or runways that won’t stay level, safety locks that engage on one side and not the other, a lift that drifts down under load, or a cable that jumps its sheave groove. Cables are engineered with a safety factor, but that factor is spent by wear, and nobody outside a lab can tell you how much is left in a cable with visible damage. Replacement is not expensive relative to the alternative — for most common 2-post and 4-post models it’s a parts cost in the low hundreds plus a few hours of labor, and cables are almost always replaced as a matched set rather than individually so the tension stays balanced.
