When a car collector calls us about setting up an autolift garage for annual state inspection work on their stored fleet, the conversation is usually part practical and part emotional. There is a Corvette that needs to come off the ground twice a year for inspection and detail, a project 240Z under it, and a truck the collector drives to town. Deciding Between a Two-Post and Four-Post for Storage
The collector we worked with last spring was clear about one thing. He wanted to store one vehicle above another and still be able to pull the top car down for state inspection twice a year. That immediately points to a four-post over a two-post, because a four-post is the safer choice for long-term storage. A two-post loads through the pinch weld points, which is fine for service but not for months of static load. A four-post supports the tires on runways, distributing weight through the suspension and body the way the manufacturer engineered.
We recommended a Rotary or BendPak four-post rated for eight or nine thousand pounds depending on the vehicle being stored. That covers a Corvette, a truck, or a mid-size SUV comfortably. The lift lives in the middle of a 30×40 pole building with a twelve-foot ceiling, which gives us just enough overhead for a truck on the top deck. Arm Restraints and Why They Matter Even on a Four-Post
Arm restraints on a two-post lift keep the arms from swinging out from under the vehicle if a bump or shift occurs at height. On a four-post, the equivalent is the pin latch that holds the runways at the raised position. Both systems exist for the same reason: to catch a load if the primary hold fails. When we walked our collector through the first inspection cycle on his four-post, we spent extra time on the pin engagement audible click. It is easy to lower the lift onto the pins by feel and think you heard the click when you did not. Every lift we install gets a mandatory second-check habit built in on install day.
For collectors who add a two-post later for chassis and suspension work, we always spec ALI-certified arm restraints with gear-driven or friction-locked engagement. If a restraint gets sloppy, the arm can drift a quarter turn during a rocking movement, and that is enough to lose a pickup point. Safety-Cam Engagement Habits from Day One
The safety-cam or safety-latch system on a two-post or four-post is what holds the load if the hydraulic system loses pressure. The cams engage into a ladder of notches on the columns, and the lift will not lower until the operator releases the cams and then bleeds the fluid. On install day, we walk the owner through what a proper cam engagement sounds like at every height. The audible click is soft on a well-adjusted lift and sharp on a lift that needs a latch lubricant reapplied.
Our collector’s habit from month one was to raise to full height, listen for the cams, bump the lift back down a quarter inch to seat them, and only then walk under. That is exactly the routine we teach. In a private shop where the owner may work solo, the safety-cam habit is the difference between a safe hobby and a dangerous one. There is no shop foreman watching. There is no coworker to catch a mistake. The owner has to be their own safety officer, which means the habit needs to be automatic. We install a laminated card next to every lift we drop into a private shop that lists the raising, cam-engagement, and lowering sequence in five bullet points. It is a small piece of paper. It has saved a lot of finger injuries over the years by keeping the habit in view.
Iowa State Inspection Prep on a Home Lift
Iowa does not have a mandatory annual safety inspection for personal vehicles, but many collectors run their own inspection cycle to keep their vehicles road-ready and to satisfy insurance requirements. Our collector uses the lift each spring and fall to check brakes, tires, ball joints, tie rod ends, and exhaust hangers. The lift makes this a two-hour job instead of a Saturday under the car with a creeper and a flashlight.
We walked him through a simple inspection sequence on install day. Raise the vehicle to shoulder height. Engage the cams. Check tires for even wear and tread depth. Move to brakes, looking through the wheel spoke or removing the wheel for a closer look. Check the ball joints by rocking the tire at 12 and 6 o’clock. Check tie rod ends at 3 and 9. Look at exhaust hangers, fuel lines, and any evidence of leaks. Drop the lift, roll the vehicle out, and log the check in a maintenance book. This routine turns an autolift garage from a nice-to-have into a working part of vehicle stewardship. For a collector with three or four vehicles, doing the same inspection cycle twice a year catches problems while they are cheap.
Storing a Vehicle Long-Term on a Four-Post
Long-term storage on a four-post is not the same as long-term storage on jack stands. On a four-post, the tires are supporting the vehicle, which is what the suspension was designed for. But the tires themselves develop flat spots if the vehicle sits in one position for months. Our collector rotates the top vehicle by rolling it off the lift onto its runways in a slightly different position every couple of months. That small habit keeps the tires from flat-spotting.
The other habit is battery care. A vehicle stored above another vehicle on a lift is not close to a power outlet unless the shop was wired for it. We recommend a battery tender with a long cord run to each stored vehicle. If the collector is going to be gone for two or three months, disconnecting the battery is the simpler answer. Fluids get checked at every rotation. Fuel stabilizer goes in during fall storage. Tarps stay off unless the shop dust load is very high. Storing on a lift saves floor space and keeps vehicles clean, but it does not eliminate the storage-care checklist. The autolift garage becomes the storage tool that lets a collector own more vehicles than a two-car garage would fit.
First-Year Maintenance on the Lift Itself
The lift needs maintenance too. In the first year of ownership, we recommend a hydraulic fluid check at three months, a cable and sheave inspection at six months, and a safety-latch lube at nine months. None of these is a big job. The fluid check is a dipstick and a top-off if needed. The cable inspection is a visual walk with a rag and a work light. The latch lube is a shot of white lithium grease at each engagement point. The lift comes with the maintenance schedule printed, and we mark it on the collector’s calendar during the walkthrough.
Cables should be replaced on a residential lift every five to seven years or when strand damage is visible, whichever comes first. Hydraulic fluid should be changed every two to three years on a lightly used private lift. The cylinder seals will typically last ten to fifteen years before they weep and need a rebuild kit. When that day comes, we can either send the kit or send a tech, depending on the owner’s comfort level. Our collector has already ordered a spare set of cables that he keeps on a hook in the shop. That is the kind of forethought a well-run autolift garage inspires. The tool becomes part of the shop identity, and the owner starts thinking like a small-scale service manager.
Iowa Great Lakes Delivery and Reflections at Year One
Delivering to the Iowa Great Lakes region from Ames is a three-hour drive. We staged the four-post columns and runways on a rollback and set them in place the same afternoon we arrived.
