A good lift safety inspection checklist is the cheapest insurance a shop will ever buy, and after years of installing and servicing lifts across Iowa we can tell you exactly what happens when one doesn’t exist. We get the call on a Tuesday morning: a lift dropped an inch, a lock skipped, an arm swung loose under load, and now nobody wants to work the bay. Nine times out of ten, the failure had been telegraphing itself for months in the form of a wet cylinder, a frayed cable strand, or a lock that clicked on one column and stayed silent on the other. Start With the Daily Walkaround Nobody Wants to Do
The daily portion of any inspection routine takes ninety seconds and it catches most of what kills lifts. Before the first vehicle goes up, walk the unit. Look at the floor around the base plates and columns for fresh hydraulic fluid — a dime-sized spot that wasn’t there yesterday is the beginning of a cylinder seal or hose fitting problem, not a mystery. Check that anchor bolts are still seated and that nothing has been backed into. Glance at the arm restraint gears on a two-post and make sure the pins drop and hold. On a four-post, look at the runway approach ramps and the cable sheaves you can see without a ladder.
Then run the lift empty through a full cycle. You’re listening more than looking. Locks should engage in audible sequence on both columns — if one side clicks and the other is quiet, stop and call us before you load it. The power unit should build pressure smoothly without screaming or cavitating, and the lift should stop dead when you release the button rather than drifting. Any hesitation, groan, or uneven column travel goes on the board. We’ve had shops in central Iowa tell us they’d been hearing the same clunk for a year; when we pulled the column cover the equalizer cable was down to a few surviving strands. Ninety seconds a morning would have found it in week two.
Cables, Chains, and the 5% Rule
Cables and chains are the components that turn a small problem into a lawsuit, and they’re the part of a lift safety inspection checklist most shops skim. On a two-post lift, the equalizer cables aren’t lifting the vehicle — they synchronize the carriages — but if one lets go, the carriages go out of sync in a hurry and the load shifts. Inspect the full run of every cable where you can reach it. You’re looking for broken wires, kinks, flat spots, rust bleeding out from inside the strand, and any section that’s gone shiny from riding a worn sheave.
The industry rule of thumb we use: if a cable has lost roughly 5% of its diameter, has broken wires in one lay, or shows corrosion inside the strands, it’s done. Cables are replaced in matched pairs or sets — never one side. Same logic applies to lift chains on four-post and some parallelogram units: measure stretch across a set number of links against spec, check for stiff or frozen links, and look at the sprockets for hooked teeth. While you’re in there, check sheave bearings for play and make sure sheaves spin freely instead of dragging the cable across a seized pulley. Lubricate per the manufacturer’s manual, not per habit — some sheaves are sealed and adding grease just attracts grit. A set of cables costs a fraction of a bay day lost to a failure.
Locks, Latches, and Safety Devices
Mechanical locks are the last line between a vehicle and the concrete, and they’re the single most common thing we find neglected. On two-post lifts, each carriage has a lock ladder and a spring-loaded dog that must drop cleanly into every position. Inspect the ladder rungs for wear and mushrooming, the dog for cracks at the pivot, and the release cable or air line for fraying and binding. If you have to jiggle the handle to get a lock to release, the linkage is out of adjustment — that’s the same linkage that has to work when you need it. Four-post lifts use lock bars or wedges in the columns, plus a slack-cable device that stops travel if a cable loses tension — test it, don’t assume it. Scissor and mid-rise units rely on mechanical lock arms plus flow-restrictor safety valves in the hydraulic circuit; the check sequence is different enough that we wrote a separate scissor lift safety inspection checklist for it. Across every style, verify the automatic arm restraints actually restrain — put a hand on the arm at full extension and try to swing it. If it moves, the gear teeth are worn and the pin isn’t seating. That’s a parts replacement, not an adjustment.
Hydraulics, Power Unit, and Air Supply
The hydraulic side of a lift safety inspection checklist is straightforward if you know where the failure points are. Start at the power unit: fluid level with the lift fully lowered, condition of the fluid (milky means water intrusion, dark and thin means heat), and the breather cap clear of debris. Iowa shops with unheated bays see cold-weather sluggishness every January, and half the time it’s the wrong viscosity fluid rather than a failing pump. Check the motor mounts, the electrical connections at the contactor, and whether the reservoir is sweating oil out a tired shaft seal.
Then follow the lines. Hose abrasion where a line crosses a column edge, weeping at the crimped fittings, and swelling near the ends are all replace-now findings. On the cylinders, run a rag up the exposed rod — if it comes back oily, the rod seal is leaking and it will only get worse. Look for rod pitting and scoring, because that’s what chews seals in the first place. Air-operated locks need the same attention: water in the air line will rust a lock cylinder from the inside, so drain the compressor tank and check the filter/regulator. Bleed the system after any hydraulic work and cycle the lift several times empty before putting a vehicle on it. If pressure holds and the lift stays put for ten minutes at height, the circuit is tight.
Anchors, Concrete, and Structural Checks
We’ve been called out to more than one Iowa shop where the lift was fine and the floor wasn’t. Anchor bolts should be checked for correct torque at least annually — and the torque spec comes from the lift manufacturer, not from feel. Loose anchors let the column rock a few thousandths under load, which fatigues the base plate welds and cracks the concrete around each hole. Look for spider cracking radiating from the anchors, spalling, or any gap under the base plate. If you can slide a feeler gauge under a base plate edge, we need to look at shimming and concrete condition before that lift takes another load.
Structurally, inspect the columns for plumb, the overhead beam and its shutoff bar on symmetric two-post units, and every weld you can see at the arm pivots and carriage. Bent arms, dished pads, and elongated pin holes are all signs of overloading or off-center loading. Check that the capacity label and the ALI certification plate are still legible — inspectors look for them and so should you. Concrete thickness and strength matter too: most commercial lifts want a minimum slab depth and PSI, and a slab poured for parking isn’t automatically a slab rated for a 12,000 lb lift. Documenting It: Daily, Monthly, and Annual Tiers
A checklist that lives in someone’s head isn’t a checklist. We tell shops to run three tiers and write all three down. Daily is the ninety-second walkaround and empty cycle by whoever opens the bay. Monthly is the deeper pass: cables and chains, lock ladders and dogs, hose condition, fluid level and condition, arm restraints, and a lubrication round per the manual. Annual is the full inspection — anchor torque, concrete condition, structural welds, load test, and every safety device functionally verified.
Keep the record on a clipboard at the bay or in whatever shop management software you already use, with the date, the lift’s serial number, who inspected it, and what was found. Two reasons: first, it makes trends visible, so you notice the same column has needed fluid three times this year. Second, if something does go wrong, documentation of a maintained lift is the difference between an incident and a liability. Under ANSI/ALI ALOIM guidance, an annual inspection should be performed by a qualified lift inspector, and OSHA will ask for records if they ever visit. When to Stop and Call a Lift Tech
There’s a line between maintenance and repair, and knowing it keeps people safe. Topping off fluid, greasing a slider, tightening a cover screw, replacing a decal — that’s shop work. Replacing cables, rebuilding cylinders, welding on structural members, adjusting lock linkages, or re-anchoring a column is our work. Manufacturers void warranties over field welding for good reason, and a lock adjustment that’s off by an eighth of an inch will engage on the bench and skip under 9,000 pounds.
