The single biggest mistake we see weekend hobbyist mechanics make when buying an automotive lift for home garage use is treating the lift as the last thing they think about instead of the first. The garage gets built, the slab gets poured, the electrical gets run, the door goes in — and then someone starts looking at hoists and discovers the ceiling is 6 inches too short, the slab is a half-inch too thin, or the door track is directly over the exact spot where the columns need to sit. We have seen every one of those in east-central Iowa. The lift belongs on the checklist during the build-out, not after. Here is the pre-purchase sequence we walk our customers through.

Step One: Decide What the Lift Actually Needs to Do

Before you pick a model, write down the three or four jobs you actually plan to do on the lift. “Working on cars” is not specific enough. Oil changes on a passenger car are a completely different lift than a suspension rebuild on a project truck. Storing a classic six months a year is a completely different lift than servicing a daily-driver. Most weekend hobbyists want some combination — a little service, a little storage, maybe a friend’s car once a month. The combination determines whether you want a two-post (best for service), a four-post (best for storage), or a mid-rise scissor (best for tire work with limited overhead).

Then write down the vehicles. Weight, wheelbase, ground clearance. A stock Miata is very different from a 3/4-ton pickup. If your daily-driver is a heavy pickup and your project car is a low-slung classic, you need a lift that handles both — which usually means an adjustable-height model with mechanical locks every 2 to 2.5 inches so you can dial in the working height. That flexibility comes standard on flagship two-posts. It is not standard on cheap imports, and that limitation shows up the first time you need to work at chest height instead of ceiling height.

Step Two: Measure the Ceiling to the Lowest Obstruction

Ceiling height is measured to the lowest object above the lift, not to the roof deck. That means the truss chord, the garage door track, the light fixtures, the exhaust duct if you have one. A pole barn with 12-foot side walls sounds like plenty of room until you notice the garage door track drops 4 inches from the ceiling and runs directly over where you planned to put the columns. We have measured east-central Iowa pole barns where the on-paper 12’6″ ceiling was actually 11’2″ at the lowest obstruction over the lift footprint.

The clearance number to remember is roughly 11’6″ for a full-overhead two-post like a Rotary SPO10 or Challenger CL10, and 11’6″ to 12’6″ for a four-post storage lift depending on the vehicles you plan to stack. If your ceiling is 10 to 11 feet clear, you are looking at a floorplate two-post (the overhead cable runs through the floor instead of over the top) or a mid-rise scissor for tire work only. Nothing about a low ceiling is a dealbreaker — it just changes which lift is appropriate.

Step Three: Test the Concrete Before You Commit

Every real manufacturer specifies a minimum concrete thickness and strength. Four inches at 3,000 PSI is the industry-standard baseline. If your garage was built recently and the pad was poured to modern residential code, you are almost certainly fine. If your garage is a converted older structure, or a pole barn where the slab was an afterthought, you may not be. We test on the walk-through with a rebound hammer and, in borderline cases, a core sample. The test costs almost nothing and the information saves the customer real money.

If the concrete is thin or weak, the options are: pour a new lift pad (typically 6 inches, reinforced, in the exact footprint), install anchor pods (small deep pours at each column location), or move the lift to a different part of the garage where the concrete is better. Do not install a lift over inadequate concrete just because you want it there. The anchor pullout scenario is a car falling — that is not a scenario we accept on any automotive lift for home garage install we handle.

Step Four: Plan the Electrical Before You Pour

Almost every home lift needs a dedicated 220V single-phase circuit — typically 20 or 30 amps depending on the motor. That circuit needs to land in a specific place relative to the columns. If your electrical panel is on the opposite side of the garage from where the lift will sit, running the wire after the fact is a headache: fishing through insulation, drilling through structure, exposed conduit on the wall. If you plan the circuit during the build, the electrician runs a straight shot to the exact spot and you never see the wire again. Cost delta at build-time versus retrofit is often 3x or more.

Weekend hobbyists also underestimate air. If you plan to run pneumatic tools, an impact gun, a paint booth — the compressor circuit and the airline drops belong on the build plan. A dedicated 20 amp 220V circuit for a 60-gallon two-stage compressor is standard. Airline drops at the lift and at the workbench are worth roughing in even if you do not install the plumbing right away. Everything is easier before the drywall goes up.

Step Five: Confirm Delivery and Unloading Logistics

A two-post lift shows up on a semi in a crate that weighs about 1,800 pounds. A four-post is heavier and longer. If your driveway does not accommodate a 53-foot trailer, or your garage door is on a slope that a pallet jack cannot roll up, the delivery becomes a real project. We ask every customer during the pre-purchase walk what the truck access looks like. In some cases we bring our own boom truck and lift the columns off ourselves. In other cases the customer has a tractor or a forklift and does the unload with our help. Occasionally we arrange curbside delivery and the customer stages the columns until install day.

The right time to figure out delivery is before you buy the lift, not after the shipping notification arrives. We had a customer in east-central Iowa where the semi could not make the driveway turn and we ended up unloading at a neighbor’s yard and moving the crate on a trailer to the actual install site. It worked out — but it would have been easier if we had known before the truck was dispatched. Delivery planning is part of the checklist.

Step Six: Budget for the Lift, the Install, and the Extras

The lift itself is line-item one. Install is line-item two and it is not optional — anchor testing, level verification, hydraulic bleed, and cycle testing under load are what turn a pile of parts into a working automotive lift for home garage service. Line-item three is the extras: rolling jacks for a four-post, extended arms for a two-post, polyurethane pad adapters for aluminum-heavy vehicles, drip trays for storage duty. Roughly a third of the customers we work with underbudget the extras and end up ordering them separately in the first six months.

Round numbers on a mid-tier home shop package: expect the lift to run in the mid-single-thousands, install to run several hundred to a low four-figure number depending on drive time and pad condition, and extras to add another few hundred to a low four figures. Below those ranges you are looking at off-brand imports or self-install, both of which we generally do not recommend. Above those ranges you are into commercial-grade or premium home-storage territory, which is fine if the workload justifies it.

Step Seven: Pick the Brand Based on the Parts Pipeline

The lift is going to last twenty years if you buy the right one. Over that lifespan you will replace maybe three to five wear items. Cables, hydraulic seals, arm restraint gears, latch springs. Every one of those is a stocked part in our Iowa warehouse if you own a Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, or Atlas. Off-brand imports do not have that pipeline, and the day you find out is the day the lift breaks down and you cannot get the part. In a home garage that is a Sunday afternoon with a car three feet in the air.

The pre-purchase checklist ends with picking a brand that is going to be around and supported when you need service. That is boring advice, but it is the advice that saves weekend hobbyists real money over the twenty-year life of the lift. Ready to walk your site?
