We’ve walked into more than a few finished garages in Iowa where the slab was poured, the walls were up, and then someone called us asking if a two post lift would fit — only to find out the ceiling was six inches too short or the slab wasn’t rated for anchors. Start Garage Build Out Planning With the Lift, Not the Layout
Most people plan a garage the way they’d plan a bedroom addition — walls first, then furniture. That order works fine for a bedroom. It doesn’t work for a shop. If a lift is anywhere in your future, even a home-storage lift you’re not buying for two years, garage build out planning needs to start with that equipment’s footprint, not the other way around. We ask every homeowner and shop owner the same question first: what do you want to lift, and how tall is it going to sit once it’s up in the air?
That single answer drives ceiling height, door placement, and even where you put the water heater or furnace. We’ve seen garages built with a gorgeous 14-foot ceiling that still couldn’t clear a lift because a support beam ran straight through the lift’s swing path. Getting the lift model picked — or at least the category, two post versus four post versus a mobile column setup — before the architect finalizes drawings saves you from redesigning a roof truss system after the fact. This is the cheapest phase of the entire project to make changes in, and it’s also the phase most people rush through.
Slab Thickness and Rebar Come Before the Walls
Every lift we install anchors into concrete, and every concrete pad has a minimum thickness and rebar spec that the lift manufacturer publishes for a reason. A slab poured for a passenger car garage floor is often 4 inches — fine for parking, not fine for anchoring a two post lift rated for a full-size truck. We tell customers doing garage build out planning to assume 5 to 6 inches of properly reinforced, cured concrete if a lift of any real capacity is in the plan, and to get that spec to the concrete contractor in writing, not verbally.
Cure time matters just as much as thickness. Anchors need concrete that’s fully cured — typically a month, not a week — or the anchor pull-test will fail and you’ll be waiting on a lift installer anyway. If you’re pouring in the fall in Iowa, factor in slower cure times with cooler weather. We’d rather tell you to wait three extra weeks than watch an installer show up and have to reschedule because the slab isn’t ready. This is one of the most common reasons a lift installation gets delayed after everything else in the garage is finished.
Ceiling Height and Door Clearance Are Not the Same Number
A lot of garage build out planning gets the ceiling height right and still misses the mark because door header height and lift swing path get overlooked. A two post lift needs enough vertical clearance for a raised vehicle plus the lift’s own arm and carriage height, and if your garage door track drops down from the header, that track can eat into the exact space you needed. We measure from finished floor to the lowest obstruction — not just the ceiling deck — because ductwork, sprinkler lines, and door tracks all count.
Four post lifts and mobile column setups have their own clearance quirks too, especially if you’re planning to add a rolling jack or store a second vehicle on the top deck. If your build out planning has a two-vehicle stack in mind, plan the ceiling height for the stacked height, not just a single lifted car. We’ve had this conversation early enough on plenty of Iowa builds that a simple ceiling adjustment during framing avoided a much bigger problem after drywall was hung.
Power, Lighting, and Air Lines Belong in the Rough-In
Lifts need power, and depending on the model, that might mean a dedicated 220V circuit rather than whatever standard outlet happens to be nearby. Garage build out planning that includes electrical rough-in for the lift location — plus air line drops if you’re running impact tools or tire equipment near the bay — saves you from surface-mounted conduit running across a finished wall later. We map out where the lift’s power unit sits and get that circuit run before drywall goes up, every time.
Lighting matters more than people expect too. A lift bay needs overhead light that isn’t blocked once a vehicle is raised, which usually means lighting placement shifts a foot or two from where a standard garage light would go. Floor drains, if you’re planning one, also need to be positioned outside the lift’s footprint and anchor pattern. All of this is far easier to sketch on paper during planning than to retrofit once the slab is poured and the walls are framed.
Choosing the Right Lift Category for Your Space
Garage build out planning isn’t complete until you’ve matched the lift category to the actual work you’ll do. A home garage storing one extra vehicle and doing light maintenance is a different animal than a shop running full alignments and heavy diesel work. Sequencing the Build So Nothing Gets Installed Twice
The order you build things in matters almost as much as the specs themselves. Slab, then cure time, then anchor layout, then rough electrical, then framing around the lift footprint, then drywall, then final lift installation — that’s the sequence we recommend on nearly every project. Skip a step or do them out of order and you risk drilling through finished walls or discovering a clearance issue after drywall makes it much harder to fix.
