When a racing team crew chief in the Council Bluffs area calls us about a leaking car lift cylinder, the first question is not what to buy, it is what to keep. Rebuild the cylinder with a seal kit, replace the cylinder outright, or replace the entire lift depending on age and condition. There is a decision tree behind that call and we walk it with him every time. This article is that same decision tree in written form, aimed at any shop or racing team currently staring at a hydraulic drip on the floor and trying to figure out whether to buy parts or start shopping for a whole new lift.

Symptom One: The Slow Drift Down
The most common symptom that starts this decision tree is a slow drift down under load. You raise the lift, engage the safety latches, do your work, but if you take the vehicle off the latches and hold it on hydraulic pressure alone, the lift creeps down maybe an inch every ten to twenty minutes. That is fluid leaking past the piston seal internally, not an external drip. External drips leave puddles you can see; internal drift leaves no puddle because the fluid stays inside the cylinder and just moves past the seal. A racing crew chief we work with in Council Bluffs called us the first time this happened on his car lift and thought he needed a whole new cylinder.
He did not. Internal drift is exactly the failure mode a seal kit was designed to solve. If the cylinder body is straight, the rod is unpitted, and the bore is unscored, you replace the seals and the lift is back to full holding pressure for another four to seven years. Seal kits for most major-brand car lift cylinders run one hundred to two hundred fifty dollars depending on the model. The rebuild takes two to four hours of shop time. Total cost including your own labor is usually under five hundred dollars. Compare that to eight hundred to fifteen hundred for a whole new cylinder assembly and the seal kit wins every time when the cylinder body is still sound.
Symptom Two: The External Weep Around the Gland Nut
Second common symptom is an oily film or drip forming at the top of the cylinder where the rod exits through the gland nut. That is a rod-wiper or rod-seal failure. Fluid is leaking to the outside as the rod cycles up and down. You will see it as a wet ring on the outside of the cylinder, sometimes running down the column onto the concrete. This one also solves with a seal kit because the wiper and rod seal are always included in a full rebuild kit. If you have this symptom on a car lift and the cylinder is less than about ten years old, do the seal kit.
Where the decision tree branches is when the rod itself is pitted from moisture that got past a failed wiper seal months or years ago. Corrosion pits on the rod chew up new seals almost as fast as you install them. Inspect the rod carefully when you pull the cylinder apart. If you see small pits, polishing marks, or rust discoloration, a seal kit will not last. That is the point where you either sleeve or replace the rod, and often the more economical answer is a complete cylinder replacement. Symptom Three: The Cylinder That Just Will Not Lift
Third symptom is a cylinder that will not lift the rated load at all or lifts very slowly. That could be a hydraulic pump problem, a check-valve problem, an air-in-the-line problem, or a cylinder problem. Diagnosing which one requires isolating the cylinder from the pump and testing with a pressure gauge. If the pump makes rated pressure but the cylinder does not extend, the internal piston seal is fully blown and fluid is bypassing without doing work. That is a rebuild candidate if the cylinder body is otherwise sound. If the pump does not make rated pressure at all, the problem is upstream, not in the cylinder.
A racing team car lift often lives a harder life than a general-purpose garage lift. Racing shops load and unload the lift more times per week because chassis prep and inspection routines cycle vehicles up and down constantly. That accelerates wear on both cylinders and pumps. If you are running a race operation and your lift is now seven or eight years old with heavy cycle count, a full pump-and-cylinder rebuild is not unreasonable to plan as a scheduled maintenance event rather than an emergency. Budget six to eight hundred dollars parts and one shop day of labor. This kind of proactive rebuild is much cheaper than an emergency failure during a race weekend.
The Age Question: When to Rebuild vs Replace the Whole Lift
Age matters. If your car lift is fifteen or twenty years old and needs a cylinder rebuild, you have to look at the rest of the lift too. Cables, safety latches, arm-locking pawls, and the pump-motor assembly all have finite service lives. A twenty-year-old lift that needs a cylinder rebuild probably also needs cables, and maybe a pump. Add all of that up and you might be spending fifteen hundred to twenty-five hundred dollars on a lift that would sell for maybe two thousand as a working unit. At that point you consider whether the total rebuild cost is worth it, or whether the money is better spent as a down payment on a new ALI Gold certified lift.
Our honest rule of thumb: if the rebuild total exceeds fifty percent of the cost of a comparable new car lift, look hard at replacement. If the rebuild is under thirty percent of new, do the rebuild. Between thirty and fifty percent, factor in the age of the anchors, the condition of the columns, and how much you trust the structural steel after two decades of service. A ten-year-old lift almost always deserves a rebuild. A twenty-five-year-old lift almost always deserves replacement. The Rebuild Procedure Step by Step
Assuming you have decided to rebuild, here is the sequence for a typical two-post car lift cylinder. Lower the lift completely and block the arms on rated jack stands as backup protection. Relieve hydraulic pressure and disconnect the hydraulic hose at the cylinder, capping both ends to keep debris out. Remove the top cylinder pin and the bottom cylinder pin. Slide the cylinder out of the column. Clamp it horizontally in a vise using soft jaws so you do not mar the tube. Unscrew the gland nut with a spanner wrench. Withdraw the piston and rod assembly together.
Inspect all three critical surfaces: rod, piston, and cylinder bore. Any bright spots or pitting means you evaluate whether to continue. If everything is clean, remove the old piston seal, rod seal, wiper, and any static o-rings. Install the new seals from the kit lubricated with clean hydraulic fluid. Reassemble the piston and rod, slide back into the cylinder tube, torque the gland nut to specification. Reinstall the cylinder in the column, connect the hydraulic hose, refill the reservoir with the specified fluid grade, and cycle the lift ten times without load to bleed air. Test hold under load. If it holds pressure, the rebuild is successful. If it drifts, the seal was not seated correctly and you pull it apart again.
Parts Sourcing and Cross-Reference
The single biggest headache in a rebuild is finding the correct seal kit for your specific cylinder. Cylinder part numbers vary by manufacturer, by model year, and sometimes by production batch. A Rotary SPO10 from 2015 does not necessarily use the same seal kit as a Rotary SPO10 from 2022. Give us the brand, model, and if possible the cylinder serial number and we can identify the right kit within minutes.
If your lift is off-brand or imported and the manufacturer is out of business, we can sometimes match a compatible aftermarket seal kit by measuring rod diameter, bore diameter, and rod length. Bring us those three measurements and photos of the cylinder ends. About seventy percent of the orphaned cylinders we see can be rebuilt with an aftermarket kit. The other thirty percent are non-standard designs where the geometry does not match anything on the market, and those we usually replace with a new bolt-on cylinder from a supported brand. That is a bigger project but it saves the rest of the lift from becoming scrap.
