A small-fleet operator in Council Bluffs asked us to compare two car lift drive on configurations for their shop, which handles tire rotation and wheel work for a fleet of half-ton and three-quarter-ton pickups. The pain point was clear: the shop’s current single lift was booked solid and they needed a second bay that could handle tire and wheel work fast without sacrificing capacity for the occasional heavier vehicle. This article puts two drive-on configurations side by side, with real numbers on footprint, capacity, install cost, and the site-survey prep that Council Bluffs shops usually miss until we point it out on the walk-through.

Two Car Lift Drive On Configs at a Glance

Both configs are four-post drive-on lifts, both from ALI Gold-certified lines, both come with rolling jacks as spec’d. The difference is capacity, runway length, and the price tag. Configuration A is a 12,000-pound drive-on with a standard-length runway, priced in the mid-four-figure range installed. Configuration B is a 14,000-pound extended-length drive-on, priced in the low-five-figure range installed. Both fit Council Bluffs pole-barn and metal-building floor plans, and both work for the small-fleet mix we typically see.

The tie-breaker for most Council Bluffs shops is whether the fleet will ever include a heavier vehicle in the future. If yes, the extended 14K is the safer buy because the capacity ceiling is higher. If the fleet is locked in at half-ton and lighter, the 12K standard saves several thousand dollars and does not sacrifice tire rotation speed. Both configurations handle wheel work equally well at the daily-driver level, so the decision usually comes down to future fleet growth.

Configuration A: 12,000 lb Standard Drive-On With Rolling Jacks

The 12K standard drive-on has a runway length of roughly fifteen and a half feet, wide enough for a full-size crew-cab pickup but not long enough for anything with a serious extended cab or long bed combo. Runway width is adjustable in most models across a range that fits everything from a compact car up through a dually pickup. Rolling jacks come with a 3,500-pound rating, which is plenty for wheel work on any half-ton or lighter vehicle in a typical rotation cycle.

The install footprint for this car lift drive on is about ten feet wide and twenty feet long including the safety zone. Column height comes in around eight and a half feet in the standard build, though extended-column options add about eighteen inches for taller-headroom applications. For a Council Bluffs shop with a standard twelve to fourteen foot ceiling, the standard column drops right in without headroom loss. Total install cost, including our labor and slab anchors, runs in the mid-four-figure range.

Configuration B: 14,000 lb Extended-Length Drive-On

The 14K extended-length drive-on runs a runway of roughly eighteen and a half to nineteen feet, wide enough to add an extra foot of drive-off room and long enough to accept dually pickup wheelbases. Rolling jacks come with a 6,000-pound rating on this config, which is what you want for wheel work on a three-quarter-ton or one-ton pickup. The runway width adjustment covers the same range as the 12K model but with beefier structural members throughout the frame.

Install footprint is about eleven feet wide and twenty-three feet long including the safety zone. Column height is around nine feet in the standard build. For a Council Bluffs shop that plans to expand into medium-duty in the future, this car lift drive on is the more defensible buy because you never have to replace it when the fleet grows. Total install cost, including our labor and slab anchors, runs in the low to mid five-figure range. The difference from Configuration A is about thirty percent more money for a lot more runway.

Site Survey: What Council Bluffs Slabs Look Like

Council Bluffs is a mix of newer light industrial construction and older commercial buildings that started as something else. Newer slabs are usually six inches of 4,000-PSI mix with a wire mesh, which is more than enough for any car lift drive on we sell. Older slabs get variable. We have seen four-inch slabs that test at 3,500 PSI (fine), and we have seen three-inch slabs that were poured over gravel with no reinforcement (not fine). A core sample from a local testing lab is the answer when we cannot confirm from drawings.

The other Council Bluffs consideration is trench drains. Many older bays have a floor drain running down the centerline, which is exactly where the drive-on runways want to sit. We can offset the columns around a drain, but sometimes the drain has to be cut and re-routed. That is a plumber call, not a lift call, and we flag it on the survey. Most fleet operators do not want a drain running through the middle of a lift bay anyway, because it collects tire debris and hydraulic drips over time.

Ceiling Clearance and Drive-Through Path

Ceiling height in a Council Bluffs fleet garage varies widely. Newer post-frame buildings run fourteen to sixteen feet. Older concrete-block buildings can be under twelve. Every car lift drive on we sell has a full lifted height that plus the tallest vehicle in the fleet must fit under the ceiling. Standard-column models want twelve feet of clearance for a passenger vehicle and closer to fourteen for a full-size pickup lifted to comfortable working height on the rolling jack.

The drive-through path is the second dimension check. Roll-up door width has to accept the widest vehicle in the fleet with column clearance. For dually pickups, that is at least ninety-six inches at the mirrors folded, and closer to a hundred and eight with mirrors extended. Column-to-column runway spacing is adjustable, so we place the columns to match the widest vehicle’s track. But the door has to fit the vehicle in the first place. A ten-foot roll-up is the practical minimum here.

Electric and Air Service for a Fleet Bay

Both car lift drive on configs run on a 30-amp 220-volt single-phase circuit or 208/230 three-phase. Council Bluffs commercial buildings usually have three-phase available; residential-fed pole barns are single-phase. Either works; the power unit ships to match. Air service is not strictly required for a drive-on, but for tire rotation work you want a compressor within hose length of both wheel positions on the runway. A 60-gallon two-stage compressor is the fleet-bay standard for good reason.

We include the electric and air layout on the survey drawing. If the shop already has a compressor loop, we mark quick-connect drops next to the lift positions. If not, we spec a compressor and a distribution loop as an add-on. The full package (lift, electric, air) runs about ten to twenty percent above the lift alone depending on what already exists in the building. It is a one-time capital cost that pays back on every rotation ticket after install day.

Which Configuration Wins for Tire Rotation and Wheel Work

For a Council Bluffs small-fleet operator whose vehicles are all half-ton or lighter, Configuration A wins on price and does the job. For a fleet with any three-quarter-ton or larger truck, Configuration B is the better long-term buy. If we are being honest, most fleets tell us half-ton only and then buy a three-quarter-ton within eighteen months. We recommend Configuration B by default for that reason, and we have never had a Council Bluffs buyer regret the extra runway.
