Why a Four-Post Was the Right Style Here

Exhaust and driveline work is fundamentally different from wheels-off brake and suspension work. You need long, uninterrupted underbody access for pipe cuts, muffler swaps, driveshaft removal, and center-support-bearing replacement. That means a four-post drive-on runway is the ideal car lift for this menu, not a two-post. A two-post gets wheels out of your way but the arms occupy the middle of the underbody where you actually want to work. A four-post keeps the entire wheelbase clear underneath, which is exactly what an exhaust tech or driveline specialist needs. It also matches the quick-in, quick-out flow of a lube-adjacent bay because a drive-on takes about thirty seconds to spot a vehicle.

The tradeoff is footprint. A twelve-thousand-pound four-post car lift with runways occupies roughly ten feet by twenty-four feet of bay space including safe clearance to walk around it. That is more than a two-post but less than a full inground lift trench. For his layout, we had one adjacent bay that could give up the floor space without disrupting the existing lube stack, and that made the choice clean. Equipment: The Line-Item Column-Set Cost

For his twelve-thousand-pound Rotary four-post with aluminum runways, the base equipment cost landed in the mid-nine-thousand-dollar range. That includes the four columns, four cable-supported runways, hydraulic power unit, hoses, and all safety-lock hardware. Add a set of two rolling jacks rated for six thousand pounds each and you are looking at another twenty-two hundred dollars for the jacks. He wanted an air line kit for impact work and a drive-over ramp for lowered vehicles, which added another six hundred combined. Total on-equipment before freight and install came to just under twelve thousand five hundred dollars.

Could he have found a cheaper import for six or seven thousand? Sure. But he had already been through the parts availability conversation on his oil-change equipment and knew what happens when a critical component fails at three years and the supplier is gone. He wanted a car lift with an ALI Gold sticker, a five-year warranty, and a domestic distributor who stocked parts. That premium runs roughly two thousand dollars over the low-import option, and it is the best insurance money he spent on the whole project. Freight, Unloading, and Delivery Logistics

Freight from the Rotary distribution facility to his east-central Iowa location came in at about seven hundred dollars because we shipped commercial to commercial with dock access on his end, so no lift-gate fee. If your delivery address is residential or has no dock, budget an extra two to three hundred for a lift-gate truck. The runways alone weigh close to five hundred pounds each and shipped as separate long crates. That is a full pallet plus long freight, which is why the carrier notes on the bill of lading always show length as the constraint, not weight.

Electrical: The Three-Phase Question

Here is where his budget got interesting. His building was on single-phase two-hundred-forty-volt power, and the Rotary power unit he picked was single-phase compatible, so no service upgrade was strictly required. He asked whether three-phase was worth the upgrade for future-proofing. Answer: for a single car lift with a single-phase-rated power unit, no. Three-phase gives you smoother motor operation and slightly faster cycle times on some models, but the utility connection fee to bring three-phase to an existing single-phase building can easily run three to six thousand dollars in a rural or suburban area. That is not a payoff you recover on lift operation alone.

Where three-phase does pay off is if you are also planning to add heavy compressors, larger tire changers, or a second lift with a higher-draw hydraulic pack. If the aggregate load will exceed a single-phase panel capacity within the next few years, do the three-phase upgrade now while the trench is open. For his shop, one four-post car lift plus the existing oil-change equipment fit comfortably on his existing single-phase service with an added twenty-amp circuit for the power head. Total electrical add-on cost was about six hundred dollars including a small subpanel and the dedicated circuit. That is the number to plug into your budget for a similar setup.

Install Labor and Site Prep

Our install crew charged a flat fee for his job that covered site inspection, anchor drilling, column assembly, runway leveling, hydraulic bleed, and one training session for his lead tech. That number ran about eighteen hundred dollars for a four-post because a drive-on is more assembly-intensive than a two-post. He also needed a spot-repair on the concrete at the outer edge of one column footprint because the original slab had a hairline crack. We poured a small dry-mix patch and let it cure a week before install. Site prep on the concrete added about three hundred dollars and one week to the calendar.

Revenue Math: How Fast Does It Pay Back?

He mapped exhaust and driveline services onto his existing appointment slots. Average exhaust job on a light truck bills around three hundred dollars with parts. Average driveline job runs four hundred to eight hundred. He estimated two exhaust jobs per week and one driveline job per week as a conservative start, which added roughly thirteen hundred to fourteen hundred dollars per week in new billable work. At a fifty percent gross margin, that puts him at about six hundred fifty dollars per week in new gross profit. Divide fifteen thousand five hundred dollars total investment by six hundred fifty per week and the car lift pays back in about twenty-four weeks of run-rate revenue.

Twenty-four weeks is a fast payback for a piece of shop equipment. Most machinery in a small service shop takes eighteen to thirty-six months to pay back. Exhaust and driveline is one of the higher-margin add-ons a lube shop can layer on because the tools are cheap, the parts markup is real, and the shop-hour billable rate is protected by the specialty nature of the work. If you are running similar numbers for your own shop, remember to include ramp-up time where the first two or three months are slower than steady-state because customers do not know you offer the new service yet. Common Add-On Purchases in the First Year

Within the first year he added three more items to the setup that he had not initially budgeted. A truck-adapter kit for the rolling jacks so he could safely lift heavier duallies, a set of transmission jacks compatible with the runway height, and a rolling toolbox that fit under the raised car lift so his techs did not have to walk to the wall for wrenches. Total additional cost was about eighteen hundred dollars across those three items. None was strictly necessary on day one but each one paid for itself in efficiency within a couple months.
